Palestinian killed by Israeli airstrike near Gaza border. A Palestinian man has been killed as he came under attack by an Israeli aircraft in the Gaza Strip, less than a week after Tel Aviv’s forces launched a bloody crackdown on an anti-occupation protest in the Palestinian enclave. The Israeli army claimed the man had arms and was getting close to the fence separating Gaza from the occupied territories when its aircraft fired at him early Thursday morning. The army would not immediately comment on what type of weapon the man was carrying. The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed the incident, saying the Palestinian died in Shifa Hospital in Gaza City after being targeted by an Israeli strike near the border, but did not identify the victim. The incident comes as fresh demonstrations are expected along the Israeli-Gaza border this Friday. On March 30, Gazans marched to the border fence at the start of a six-week protest, dubbed “The Great March of Return.” The mass protest, however, turned violent when Israeli military forces used lethal force to disperse the crowd. Israel had previously deployed military vehicles and special forces, including 100 snipers, to Gaza’s border. The regime’s forces had also been authorized to shoot at the demonstrators. Footage that circulated online following the protests showed that those who were shot posed no threat to Israeli troops. The death toll from Israel’s crackdown rose to 19 earlier today, when a Palestinian man, identified as Shadi Hamdan, died of the wounds he had sustained Friday when he was shot by Israeli forces in the east of the city of Rafah, located 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of Gaza City. Besides the 19 killed, some 1,500 Gazans were injured. Meanwhile, the Gaza town of Khan Younis was the scene of an anti-Israeli protest this morning. A number of Palestinians suffered respiratory problems after Israeli forces used tear gas to disperse the protesters. Israeli troops also fired at Palestinian students near the Gaza district of Zeitoun. Additionally, three Palestinian fishermen were wounded after Israeli forces opened fire at their boats off the coast of the besieged Gaza Strip.

Facebook says data leak wider than previously estimated. Facebook says the personal information of up to 87 million users may have been improperly shared by the US social media company with a British political consulting firm, up from a previous estimate of more than 50 million. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a conference call with reporters on Wednesday that he accepted blame for the data leak, while also saying he was still the right person to head the company he founded. The data leak, which has mostly affected Facebook members in the US, has angered users, advertisers and lawmakers. Zuckerberg will testify about the matter next Tuesday and Wednesday during two US congressional hearings. “When you’re building something like Facebook that is unprecedented in the world, there are going to be things that you mess up,” Zuckerberg said, adding that the important thing was to learn from mistakes. He said the social networking service had not seen “any meaningful impact” on usage or advertisement sales since the scandal. Facebook, the world's largest social media company with more than 2 billion monthly active users, made almost all its $40 billion in revenue last year from advertising. One reason Facebook and other internet companies collect personal information from users is to deliver targeted advertising. Facebook first acknowledged last month that the personal information of about 50 million of users wrongly ended up in the hands of London-based Cambridge Analytica. Zuckerberg, on the call with reporters, said Facebook should have done more to audit and oversee third-party app developers like the one that Cambridge Analytica hired in 2014. He said the company was taking steps to restrict which personal data is available to third-party app developers. Most of the up to 87 million people whose data was shared with Cambridge Analytica were in the United States, Facebook Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer wrote in a blog post. The previous estimate of more than 50 million Facebook users affected by the data leak came from a US and UK newspaper, The New York Times and The Observer.

Taliban vow 'serious revenge' after deadly aerial attack in northeast Afghanistan. The Taliban militant group has vowed to "take serious revenge" after a recent Afghan airstrike on a religious school (madrasa) killed dozens of people, including children in northeastern Province of Kunduz. The group issued a statement late Wednesday saying it "condemns in the strongest terms this major crime and vows to take serious revenge against the perpetrators." The Afghan military initially denied civilians were among the dead and wounded in the aerial attack which took place in the militant-controlled Dashte Archi district outside Kunduz City on Monday The Afghan government also said the bombing had killed only Taliban commanders and caused no civilian fatalities. However, the office of President Ashraf Ghani acknowledged late Tuesday that civilians had been among the dead, and that the bombing would be investigated. The United Nations said on April 3 it was investigating "disturbing reports of serious harm to civilians" in an airstrike on a religious school in the area. Local residents and witnesses have now confirmed that helicopters struck the madrassa where a graduation ceremony for religious students was under way. Abdullah, 40, who lives near the compound housing the madrassa and mosque and was invited to attend as a member of the local community told media outlets that he saw the airstrike happen. "We were about to finish the ceremony at 1:00 pm when (Afghan military) aircraft bombarded innocent children," he said. "People were panicked. Children and elders were also wounded in the bombardment." An AFP photographer, who visited the scene of the airstrike on Wednesday, saw large piles of hats, turbans and shoes that were said to belong to the victims of the airstrike. At least half a dozen freshly dug graves could be seen nearby. Government officials in both Kabul and Kunduz have given conflicting figures for the number of casualties. Security forces now say the attack killed a total of 57 to 70 people, but local officials believe the number to be higher.

Israel threatens to open fire at Gaza protesters amid renewed rallies. Israeli minister for military affairs warns that the army will continue to fire at Gazans if they approach the fence separating Israelis and Palestinians. "If there are provocations, there will be a reaction of the harshest kind like last week," Avigdor Lieberman told public radio on Thursday ahead of fresh anti-occupation protests this weekend. On March 30, Gazans marched to the fence at the start of a six-week protest, dubbed “The Great March of Return,” demanding the right to return for Palestinians driven out of their homeland. The demonstrations turned violent after Israeli forces used tear gas and live fire against the protesters. A total of 20 Palestinians were killed, 19 of them during the March 30 clashes and another by Israeli drone fire late Wednesday night. The Israeli regime's use of lethal force against Gazans has sparked criticism worldwide. The UN And the EU have both called for an investigation into the carnage, but Tel Aviv has rejected the proposal. On Tuesday, Human Rights Watch slammed Israel’s killing of Palestinian protesters as “unlawful” and “calculated,” saying those officials behind the shoot orders are to blame for the bloodshed. The Return rallies culminate on May 15, the day Palestinians commemorate Nakba Day (Day of Catastrophe) when hundreds of thousands fled or were driven out of their homes in 1948 and Israel was created. Now, preparations are underway for new protests near the Gaza fence this weekend. Elsewhere in his remarks, Lieberman said he hoped the Palestinians would understand that the protests were "not worth it to continue," claiming that most of the Gaza victims were "well-known terrorists." “We have set very clear rules [of engagement] and we have no intention of changing them,” he said. “We are determined to protect the security of Israeli citizens, of course, first and foremost, in the area of Gaza, and there will be no compromise on this issue, no flexibility.” On Wednesday, Israeli rights group B'Tselem called on troops to disobey the military’s “manifestly illegal” shoot-to-kill orders.
