for about seven(??) years i have Edo Tensei Izuna AU in my mind

Izuna died, Konoha was built, Madara went mad and left, Tobirama and Hashirama were left alone, and war with a neighboring village is looming. to gain an advantage in the war, Tobirama needs information about certain clans in that territory, and he knows the Uchiha have it but it turns out that Izuna Uchiha took all that intelligence with him to the grave and the only living person who has the information Tobirama needs is Madara.

after thinking it over Tobirama decides that questioning the dead Izuna is easier than questioning the living Madara, so he creates the Edo Tensei technique. the idea is that he’ll be able to subjugate Izuna’s will, easily ask him questions and then dispel the technique. but))) Izuna’s power of hatred and rage turns out to be so strong that he breaks free from his bonds and runs away. and now not just one crazy Uchiha is roaming the walls of Konoha but two. and Tobirama thinks oh Fuck.

and Izuna))) oh that’s funny. after his death that's Madara who has his eyes. Edo Tensei is restoring Izuna's body but Izuna still feels a connection to the only part of himself left in this world. the moment Tobirama summons him from the dead Izuna for a second sees the world through his own eyes — which at this moment are Madara’s eyes. and he feels the whole barrage of fucking pain and hatred that’s tearing Madara to pieces. so everything he feels when looking at Tobirama isn’t hatred for his killer, it’s pure rage at the thought of What the Fuck Did You Do to My Brother.

so technically Izuna thinks he was right that the village turned out to be Senju’s trap, and that Hashirama betrayed Madara, and everything is terrible

(but later he’ll have time to learn that things are a bit more complicated than they seem at first glance) (actually, this is the story of how Tobirama and Izuna got along after his death) (and then they fall in love)

(and then Tobirama is forced to dispel the technique and kill Izuna with his own hands for the second time) (to kill Izuna whom he now loves to the point of madness)

– my favorite hc about Yang (though maybe it’s actually canon??) is that he devours all the intellectual books he can get his hands on, not just history but the humanities in general

– so sometimes in a conversation he gets carried away and it turns into a Lecture

– Reinhard always listens with his heart in his throat because the way Yang looks so vividly alive in those moments, how passionately he speaks, how his eyes sparkle – it’s so hypnotizing that Reinhard just sits there frozen thinking god god please just keep talking

– but at the same time he really tries to listen and grasp the point, but when Yang goes full lecturer mode he can comment on such niche stuff that it gets kind of hard

– then Yang catches himself and gets very beautifully embarrassed and apologizes a lot like sorry i got carried away again and started rambling and probably tired you out, i’m really sorry

– Reinhard can’t immediately convince Yang that everything’s fine because his head is still ringing from how beautiful Yang looks when he’s that passionately into something

– later Reinhard will think like fuck do i need to become a goddamn sociology paper so you’d look at me like that too??

– so in the moment Reinhard is enchanted, but then after Yang leaves and Reinhard replays the visit in his head he starts spiraling

(god i love this contrast how Reinhard is legendary emperor and how he can absolutely bury himself like this)

– because he starts thinking maybe Yang would be more interested talking to someone who actually understands what he’s talking about? someone who has their own opinion on it? maybe Yang would want a debate? maybe Yang’s bored with him? is he even smart enough for Yang??

– for the next two weeks he frantically studies all the books Yang mentioned (of course alongside work because sleep and rest are for the weak), until eventually his head feels like it’s going to crack

– (none of the shit Yang mentioned becomes any clearer)

– i think Oberstein watching this lowkey hates Yang because what the hell. every time after his visits their emperor goes into a manic episode.

– he tells Hilda that we need to find for the emperor someone better. Hilda says shhh wait he just barely got out of depression bc of Yang, better let him frantically flip through books or change laws

– okay and when Yang visits again next time and he is met by an exhausted Reinhard with a dead look in his eyes he genuinely freaks out and tries to figure out what happened, war or revolution

– turns out it was an attempt to cram a graduate program into two weeks because Reinhard doesn’t know how to give up, and now he’s terribly embarrassed about all this while Yang stares at him in righteous horror (but actually in that moment Yang feels such overwhelming tenderness it’s ridiculous)

– and that’s how Yang Wenli’s tutoring side job begins

(just for context here, i think Reinhard is obviously smart enough to talk with Yang about politics, sociology, and strategy, but when Yang reaches the level of “here is a speech that if you write it down would turn into a dissertation,” i think anyone would drop off at that point just because of how specific it gets)

onesided celegorm/dior is such fun bc it's a clusterfuck of celegorm's daddy issues about feanor colliding headfirst with his sense of impotent rage and emasculation and cuckoldry from the whole luthien debacle, all heaped on top of his obsessive lust for a vitriolic pretty boy who can and has kicked his ass. he wants to be dior's father and he wants dior to call him daddy and he wants to gorily murder dior and he wants all his organs ripped out of him by dior's teeth and he wants his lifeblood to drench dior's face and mat up dior's beautiful luscious hair. meanwhile dior's average reaction to celegorm:

tobiizu hc like What If at some point their trust goes so far that for some mission or during a war with another village they desperately need an element of surprise or something like that, and Izuna suggests to Tobirama “come on borrow one of my sharingan eyes”?

I can't that’s wild. I think Tobirama would would lose his mind in that moment.

he’d be both outraged and fascinated by the offer, like, “Are you seriously thinking I’m going to give it back??” And then he helplessly realizes that yes he actually would give it back.

and who knows maybe it’s because Izuna Uchiha just twisting him around his finger, or is it because of the village, or because trust has taken such deep root in his heart and that’s just how it should be.

and then!! that moment of seeing the world through the eyes of your (beloved) enemy.

Tobirama who says “Are you sure I’ll be able to activate the Sharingan? I don’t even understand how your damn technique works” and Izuna who looks at him very intently and says “Of course you will, Tobirama. If you were an Uchiha, you’d have had the mangekyo long ago. You’ve always had enough of everything for this.”

and Tobirama doesn’t understand what everything means until he activates the sharingan, and oh god. how much emotion this damn technique draws out, how it rips him wide open, forcing him to relive the sensations of the most terrible and the most beautiful moments of his life.

I think he and Izuna could have activated the mangekyo together at some point.

I think Tobirama would never have been able to look at Izuna the same way again after that.

I think they would only have talked about it many years later.

but I think when giving Izuna back his sharingan Tobirama would ask "Why the fuck didn't you do this earlier?" and it would sound so helpless because Tobirama would be horrified by this new understanding, and Izuna would brush it off with some joke, but Tobirama couldn't help but notice that Izuna was just as slightly terrified, and that in itself is an answer because yeah. that's why.

TobiIzu Countdown Comic

my take on a tobiizu slow burn, enemies-to-comrades-to-friends-to-idiots-to-lovers story, told in narrated montage comic, complete with mutual pining and impending-peril-as-motivation-to-finally-get-together

consider this the AU where Izuna lives because he's wearing armor to what was canonically his last battle (see first panel)

this was written to be read somewhat seamlessly, however, each POV can mostly be read standalone as well.

heavily inspired by Gravity of Tempered Grace by @silver-studios - (I sketched this comic out in a frenzy after catching up on the latest chapters..........)

Cazerne is the first to suspect that there’s something going on between Yang and Reinhard. to make Yang to do some paperwork he’d has to launch a manhunt for him across the entire Iserlohn, but all it takes is for Emperor Reinhard to find fault with some document and summon Yang to Fezzan and Yang immediately goes there with a happy, blissful look on his face.

Yang hasn’t even once tried to dodge a diplomatic trip to Fezzan (even though he dodges the meetings he himself schedules) (at one point, they spent weeks trying to persuade him to go to Heinessen) (Cazerne personally goes after him and pleads сome on, Yang, sign the document for mom, for dad, for the Free Democratic Republic) (but here as soon as some Emperor sends another idiotic nitpick, Yang practically runs there skipping) (and not a single whine or social critique along the way to Fezzan)

Cazerne: does Emperor Reinhard have some special way of handling paperwork?

Yang: what?

Cazerne: some kind of incentive system, maybe.

Yang: why do you think that?

Cazerne: I don’t know, just a guess. maybe you and I should try something like that too?

Yang: ...

Yang: you know exactly what you're talking about, don't you?

Cazerne: absolutely, yes))

Yang, mournfully: is it that obvious?

Cazerne: more or less, but right now I’m way more interested in discussing the full version of your relationship. by the way, if you’d told me earlier that you wouldn’t consider anyone less than an emperor as a partner, I wouldn’t have bugged you about this for so many years

Yang, slowly making his way toward the exit: mmm okay cool. by the way, Julian’s waiting for me over there.

Cazerne: Julian’s on a mission.

Yang: that’s where he’s waiting for me, you’re right.

reinyang, after the anniversary of Kircheis's death Reinhard becomes paranoid, fixating on the idea that “everyone I love leaves me” and cannot stop thinking that Yang will be killed too. he becomes hyper-fixated on that failed assassination attempt on Yang on Leda, conjuring up wild scenarios in his head about what would have happened if the assassins had succeeded (ha))) and eventually, when he can’t take it anymore, he decides to assign his own bodyguards to Yang because, your honor, have you seen Yang? this guy is so lost in his thoughts that he’d probably only notice a gun if you hit him in the face with it. and here’s what he’ll do without security (Walter, Julian and all the Rosenritters are like: awesome, thanks for the trust.)

the only problem is that Yang already has security, and this wild Rosenritters security quickly notices that some shady characters are showing up on Iserlohn and constantly trailing after Yang, so for the first month or so Dusty tries to uncover the conspiracy, the Rosenritters assign twice as many guards to Yang, Yang whines and tries to escape from it all, Julian has to have a Serious Talk with him about how important is it to keep Yang safe, Yang again tries to escape this mess by going to Fezzan for at least a week but they won’t let him go, and when Yang turns down the invitation to Fezzan Reinhard starts getting even more worked up. so, a month and a half later, Walter and the Rosenritters finally carry out a spectacular raid, and so it finally becomes clear what’s going on.

the next time Yang arrives on Fezzan with such a large military delegation, rumors begin to circulate throughout the Empire that it is a threat and a show of military force, while Yang simply stares intently at Reinhard throughout the entire official ceremony.

on this day Reinhard meets a new version of Yang, with a commanding voice and piercing eyes. and he is so struck by this contrast with the usually gentle Yang that throughout the entire conversation while Yang is scolding him over the whole security incident Reinhard just stares at him without looking away thinking oh my god. because it’s the same feeling he had when he faced Yang on the battlefield.

so his paranoia finally lets go. for the next few days he’ll think only of how impressive Yang is when he’s seriously displeased with something. and then he’ll be busy resolving a diplomatic conflict, because the Rosenritters were so demonstratively menacing that it led to a couple of military skirmishes, which in turn led to a diplomatic conflict.

(and then Reinhard will provoke Yang a couple more times on purpose)))

hashimada watch tobiizu confess that they have Something Like A Relationship:

okay but))) hashimada who are making fun of tobiizu and getting back at their younger brothers for all those years of nagging)))

I mean, I think at first they were watching tobiizu with this vibe of “don’t breathe, don’t move, don’t make a sound, we might scare them off!!” like holy shit for the first time in ages the younger ones aren’t trying to kill each other, we should check on them maybe they’re sick. then hashimada have a mind-blowing moment when they accidentally catch Tobirama and Izuna kissing (hashimada then just sat on the porch all evening, staring into space, rethinking everything they knew about this world)

then they started testing the waters)) Madara, who carefully asks Izuna something like “hey, dear brother, it seems like you and Tobirama have been getting along pretty well lately, don't you?” and Izuna, without looking up from his work: “yeah, turns out we have so much in common — like our crazy, delusional, idealistic brothers, can you believe it?”

and at the same time, Hashirama is asking Tobirama “so, working with Izuna Uchiha isn’t that hard, is it?” and Tobirama puts on his best tough look and says “yeah, my dear brother, unlike some people Izuna Uchiha at least READS THE CONTRACTS HE SIGNS.”

but then, when Tobirama and Izuna finally, with great difficulty, admit to their older brothers that they’re sort of in a relationship (and when they say it, they both look like they’re about to throw up). that’s when)))) Madara and Hashirama finally get their revenge on them.

Madara, with a blank expression on his face: “oh, Izuna. it’s so nice that we can finally talk about how unbearable the Senju are. they’re terrible people, aren’t they? I really don’t get how anyone could like them.” and Izuna is like “yeah, yeah, okay, great, I got it. you don’t need to keep going.” and Madara is like “oh no, little brother))) I’ve only just begun)))”

and Hashirama with the sweetest, warmest and most innocent expression on his face: “Uchihas, yeah. disgusting. treacherous. you can’t trust Uchihas. it’s so nice that we agree on just how much we despise their clan, yeah.” Tobirama tries to give him a stern look in response but this is Hashirama, you can’t faze him with such trivialities))

in the end, Tobirama and Izuna take their revenge by gloatingly making their older brothers do paperwork. like Since you two have so much time for jokes, why don’t you do something useful for once in your lives?

Behold, the cause of at least 40% of Arda's problems through chain reaction

I really love this idea of Tobirama voluntarily looking into Izuna’s sharingan eyes because it’s such a wild display of trust. imagine what it cost him. how agonizing it must have been to override all the instincts that had been drilled into his head for years. consciously forcing himself to overcome one of his most basic instincts.

and at the same time I like to think that Tobirama is enchanted by Izuna’s sharingan. that it’s not just a forced demonstration of trust – no, despite all his paranoia, Tobirama actually enjoys looking into those cursed eyes, like a realized obsession to jump from a great height. for Tobirama it’s just as delightful as it is agonizing – to expose himself to his personal enemy like this, over and over again. and I think he’s fascinated by the sharingan itself as a power that has taken so much from him personally and has always been an uncompromising horror, and now it is here right in front of him.

(bonus is that the more often Tobirama looks into those eyes the greater the chance that one of those times Izuna actually caught him in a genjutsu, and now all around him is unreal, and these suspicions are like a noose around his neck that’s tightening more and more but Tobirama still can’t stop looking)
