Asking a Friend // Courtney & Dex
phasesofcourtney:
Courtney smiled at Dex, trying not to see like anything was up. She wanted to seem like the topic came up in normal conversation. She didn’t want it to be too obvious that she had been planing this all week. To start things off, she started a casual conversation. She asked him about his day, how classes and homework were going. She listened closely as she talked, made sure she had open and receptive body language. She wanted him to know she was interested and listening. Patience was key
But Courtney never could wait for anything.Â
During a very brief silence between Dex’s talking, Courtney couldn’t hold it in any longer. The anticipation was killing her.Â
“Dex, I have something to ask you!” Courtney stood up, hands firmly on the table as she spoke. All of the confidence she had in the mirror this morning suddenly dissipated and there were only nerves. In a flash, the whole world moved and Courtney was falling. Her hands went straight through the table followed by the rest of her body. As her faced phased through, she gasped and was able to materialize before she fell through the floor completely. Unfortunately, that meant she fell face first into the tile of the cafeteria. The stinging pain was quickly taken over by embarrassment. She tried to keep herself calm before she started to cry and lost even more control.Â
See now Dex- pretty simple dude, at least he liked to think he was. He works best in simply situations. Sitting alone while eating lunch: simple. Sitting with friends while offering one word responses: simple. Sitting one on one with a girl you cant even look in the eye as she asks you how your day was: harder than general relativity. Rocket science would surely be a simpler task.Â
With thoughts racing through Dex’s head, his mouth (and nerves) hardly seemed to be keeping up. “Right um, you know how it goes, classes and stuff. Um, gym was lame- I mean chill, sure,” he shrugged, “ Classes are super, so super.” Though he said it jokingly he retained his sarcastic monotone voice. “Homework is a thing and it’s there boy I tell ya” His eyes would dart between Courtney, whose face seemed as brillint a the sun as Dex could hardly kepe a gaze on her,  and the rest of the room, just to see if anyone was heading there way. At this point Dex wasn’t even touching his food, this encounter required all his attention.Â
As Dex’s talking slowly came to a halt, he decided to focus on Courtney, if someone had to talk he would definitely rather it be her. He took a deep breath, swallowed before speaking again, “Let’s talk abo-” Suddenly, she was gone, at least her face was as it went through the table. Dex immediately moved to catch her, the rest of her body phasing through his hands (no shit sherlock) “Oh- oh shit.”Â
Diving under the table, Dex placed a hand on her shoulder to keep her steady, knowing full wel it wouldn’t really prevent anymore phasing. “Hey, you okay?” Dex shook his head at his stupid question, the girl just face planted into the floor, dumbass, “Probably not, right.” mumbling under his breath he moved to help her back up.
