“Having enough stock to make people happy is expensive. It is very difficult to get funding. Lenders are generally unwilling to give enough of a line of credit necessary to maintain cash flow through the peak financial crunch when stock is delivered. When the bills are due, the stock won't have sold through enough to be able to pay for it all. So it's a constant ebb and flow - a condensed period of owing multiple distributors very large amounts.

While it's not a regret, it would have been good to have more budgeting advice [at the start of our journey] from a professional in the industry.”

“I’m a fifth-generation jeweler. My dad learned from his dad and grandfather. My grandfather learned from his dad and grandfather before him. They were all jewelers in Italy.

I was in high school when my dad opened S.S. Goldsmithing. After school and on weekends, I made a wedding set from start to finish. Seeing the whole process with a happy customer, I realized I could do that. I've learned a lot from my dad - he's a huge reason of why I’m doing it. He's always been there to teach me and inspire me.”

“I get inspiration on Instagram. The people I follow are all artists in one way or another. I look through my feed and I say, ‘Oh, I gotta go paint!’ I also have my art books; The Group of Seven and Van Gogh inspire me.

And, I meet my friends every two weeks to paint together and that’s inspiring too. In a way, I feel freer when I paint with a group.

I’m getting used to not making the money I used to make in oil and gas accounting; but, it doesn't matter to me anymore, I just want to pay my bills and keep on painting.”

“My favourite thing is when kids donate! A mom contacted me to help teach her 5-year-old daughter how to give back to their community. Her daughter loves babies, so mom asked if they could help with our baby items. Of course I said yes! They come in on Sundays and this kid LOVES it! She’ll sort baby clothes and say, ‘Awe...this is so cute,’ or put together sets of mismatched Polly Pockets. There’s thousands of toys around her, yet she’s never once asked for anything! The mom is raising a little philanthropist and her daughter doesn’t even know it.”

“I can’t mass-produce products as each piece is individually handcrafted in my home studio in Edmonton. My body will sometimes ache at night after making all of my jewelry. However, I think that the benefits far outweigh the negatives. My customers prefer the handcrafted element of my jewelry - not perfect but natural elements.

My advice? Believe in yourself. Being true to yourself and your style sells itself. People can see that.”

“Picking the right location is the most important thing in the restaurant business. Our first location was near a theatre - a social hub with lots of parking. The second thing is to ask, ‘What does the customer want?’ Satisfy the customer rather than your own ego or mindset. You will never make every customer happy, but smile and say thank you anyways.
