Week 13 (Sadly) - Zine There, Done That - Part 2
Everyone and their work was so awesome to see displayed from the ceiling (plus the pizza was an excellent addition to the day). Hopefully we can see some more zines from everyone after this too!
Week 13 (Sadly) - Zine There, Done That + Reflection
Coming into this course I was hoping to improve on my skills that I have developed over the years. I mean I can design, but I really wanted to take my skills from being a good designer, to a great designer. There’s always something new to learn wherever you go in life. I definitely found this through the practical classes, lectures and so much more than I thought. Not only was I able to get an awesome design history timeline from the old school carvings, all the way through to what design actually might mean for us with the development of technology. I was able to remind myself to look at design from the fun and playful perspective that I sometimes forget about. Playing with one long string to create a pangram (learnt that word too!) all the way to looking at collage to make letters from random images. I am over the moon about taking what I’ve learnt into the rest of Communication Design and also my general design life. DON’T TAKE EVERYTHING SO SERIOUSLY ALL THE TIME, HAVE SOME FUN WITH IT! Thank you for all you have done Karen and Andy, we will miss the shenanigans, for now ;)
(Plus my zine collection feels more like a collection now!)
Zine there done that!!
Loved seeing everyone’s work at the exhibition today. There was sooo much variety in everyone’s design and chosen creatives. & thanks for the pizza :)
So much awesome work there, including yours!
Remi Chynoweth (@moptopdesigns) Zine FINAL
THIS. THIS EVERYONE IS THE ZINE THAT I HAVE SPENT A LOT OF TIME PERFECTING.
I wanted to keep the zine’s style pretty simple due to Remi’s work having so many little details, but I didn’t want it to lack the colourful and playful side either. Adding some more structure to balance out the organic flow in the artworks helped to continue that balance without the overall zine feeling too overwhelming. Plus Remi has a bubbly and colourful personality so I really wanted that to shine through too!
I was so honored to have my friend Remi allow me to pick at her brain and artworks with my questions for this zine. Going through high school with her she has always been a wonderful inspiration for me to improve on my own work and practice. So that’s why she became the perfect candidate for this interview, I hope I did her awesome work justice because IT IS STUNNING!!
Week 12 - @moptopdesigns Zine FIRST PRINT
This is the first print I did on the zine with my crappy printer, and I really like the overall aesthetic but I think I am going to change a few small things to make it even more amazing!!
Week 12 - Ask Me Anything Progress PART #2
This week I was able to conduct my interview with my lovely friend Remi Chynoweth (@moptopdesigns)! I had such a lovely time chatting with her about her work as well as catching up and seeing what she is up to after high school. I’ve always been inspired by her work and how much her illustration business has grown over the years and I thought she would be amazing for this zine.
I really wanted to balance out the organic and naturalistic style of her artworks with a minimalistic bright colouring over the zine. So I can hopefully had a little bit of extra flair with embroidering the binding! Though I still need to decide the colourings of the thread to fully compliment Remi’s artworks (I'm thinking a pinky red/cool green combo?)
Week 11 - Ask Me Anything Progress
After our last class working zines, I decided to make little prototypes of different sizes and page counts to see which one would fit my creative the best (I’m gonna leave them a secret until the exhibition!). Out of all the prototypes, I decided the A4 - 16 Page template was the best, not only because of how cute little pocket-sized it is, but also the 16-page template is a little easier for me to get my head around for my current zine skills. Plus I have taken some of my creative’s artworks and created a few colour palettes that can help compliment her artworks.
I also had the idea of binding the zine using thread for an added creative detail and to reference my creatives awesome work with watercolour. Though I feel that changing the colouring combo to something a little more natural will help highlight the artworks once printed.
I have had a little trouble with getting my interview together so hopefully, these little plans can get my zine ready until the official interview!
✨✨Ask Me Anything Progress ✨✨
With a few more trials and a lot of patience I finally have a copy that is looking half decent. I decided to move the cut out to act as a centre piece for the zine, show casing her work. I am also looking at adding pop ups, reflecting the fun nature of susanna harrison’s illustrations.
I love these cut outs throught the zine they look so amazing!! Super excited to see what the FINAL final zine turns out like!!
Week 10 - Zine Tutorial / Creations
I am super duper proud to present my VERY FIRST ZINE IN THE WORLD “Coolest Zine Ever TM” (and @mik-ca‘s Bowie as the second addition to my collection!!).
We used Indesign to help make these wonderful designs along with some photos from a previous assignment of a feather duster! I was so excited to learn how to create a zine, not just for the Ask Me Anything assignment, but for me to make more generally and improve my skills to be the BEST. ZINE. MAKER. IN. THE. WORLD. It might take some hard dedicated years (cue Eye of the Tiger) but I know I can do it!
Week 9 - Magazine and Books into the Alphabet Groups Work
I also wanted to share some of the groups work too, cause so many of these letters looked amazing!!!
Week 9 - Magazine and Books into the Alphabet
So this weeks workshop was using the visuals from magazines and books (I had a wonderful Good Health magazine) and create some lovely abstract letters. This task was a great way for me to do a little bit more physical hands-on work since this course generally uses so much digital work. It was a nice change of pace to work with college too since I haven’t really had the chance to just have fun and not give a crap about how neat the final letters looked.
Week 8 - "Architexture" Workshop
This week coming back from the holidays we were given a mission to find letters and numbers out of all the wonderful things in the RMIT campus. I wanted to share my little contribution because this was actually a really fun task to do! Especially the “5″ that I found on Bowen St because that was one of the harder ones to find and I was super determined to find it!! Though I am super duper excited to see the program come out (hopefully week 13 it was?) and play around with some awesome looking RMIT architectured words!
Mid Semester Holidays - Progress on “Ask Me Anything” Assignment
Recently for this assignment I have been taking some time to work out what kind of people I want to interview for my zine. Particularly I would like to explore questions that are about the creative’s practices going into the future and technologies development. My five options vary in creative professions that both utilise modern technologies like photographers and more traditional practices such as painters and illustrators. The numbers on the side are based on how difficult they will be to contact but I am still a little unsure about who specifically I would like to explore this topic of traditional and modern technologies with!
Week 7 - What is Good Design?
After exploring a bunch of articles I was drawn to George Nelson’s Good Design: What is it for?. While I was reading Nelson’s opinions on the idea it made me question what my own opinions were. So I decided to create a little mindmap of what good design means to me in my designs. Hopefully I can add onto this as I begin to learn more and more each day!
Week 6 - Geometric Typefaces
So during our practical this week I worked with a lovely bunch of people to create a beautiful 10/10 font called “SUBWAY” (not the sandwich shop we all know and love but the railway train system). It was so amazing that everyone in the class shed a tear from its glory, but to be completely honest I enjoyed playing with the basic square shapes to make letters that were fancy but easy to read. Even the addition of the quarter circles was a cool way to improve on what we thought already worked. My lesson learned for the day, you can always make a design better by looking at it from different perspectives!
