Macross Plus (1994)
Decades after Space War I, the UN Government is testing variable fighter prototypes on the colony planet Eden. Two models are in the running to become the new military standard, but the hostility between their test pilots—fiery maverick Isamu and stony human-Zentradi hybrid Guld—goes beyond the bounds of professional rivalry. Former friends divided by a trauma in their youth, tensions are further exacerbated by the arrival of Myung, object of both men’s adolescent affections. She too is haunted by the past, vicariously living her dreams of stardom through the mesmerizing virtual idol singer Sharon Apple. What none of the three can guess is that, due to illegal interference with her AI program, Sharon has developed a personal interest in resolving their tortured love triangle… by lethal means, if necessary.
This long-awaited canon sequel to the classic Super Dimension Fortress Macross boasts an impressive staff list made up of industry vets and rising young talent. Most notable among the then-newcomers are co-director Shinichiro Watanabe, script writer Keiko Nobumoto and composer Yoko Kanno, best known today for their iconic collaboration on 1998’s Cowboy Bebop. Supervised by franchise creator Shoji Kawamori, Macross Plus pushed the anime envelope with its innovative sound design, pioneering fusion of traditional animation with early computer graphics and exploration of mature themes like aging and regret.
Macross Plus was released first as a four-part OVA, then as a streamlined motion picture. The OVA edition is available streaming via Amazon Prime Video.
