At Andrea’s clear attempt to banter back, Rikke took the younger woman’s hand in her own and gave it a reassuring little squeeze. “A woman who truly appreciates the finer things in life,” she added with faux air of importance they both knew very well she would never giver herself. Still holding onto Andrea’s hand, she led them another street over before they were at the entrance of the bar she’d found. Rikke knew full-well she shouldn’t have been looking to begin with, but worked out in this case…or so she told herself. “In my book, they most definitely are. But I do trust you and your amazing listening skills, I just - need a little bit of time to sort it out in my head first,” she said, not wanting to come across like she was shutting her friend’s offer down. “Well, then I guess it’s a good thing we’re here,” RIkke said as she pushed inside, and led Andrea to the bartop. “We can sit at the bar, or we can find a nice private booth if you’d rather.”

giving the other’s hand a little squeeze in return, andrea nodded her head a bit, edges of her lips curling upwards. ‘ i am not good at too many things, but i’d say appreciating finer things is something i’m good at. ’ she said, even though she was not at rikke’s level of humor and playful banter, she did contribute to their friendship in her own way through little remarks like that. walking along the other, she looked around when they were finally in the bar -- which was far from andrea’s scene but with all that was happening around, she felt like she really needed a drink. and after all, it wasn’t like she was alone -- of all the people, she would feel the most comfortable around rikke in a bar, knowing that she knew her way around stuff. ‘ well, we must have quite the different books. but i get you, it’s okay. i would not be offended even if you didn’t want to say a thing, rikke. ’ she smiled reassuringly before looking at the bar nervously. ‘ uh -- maybe a private booth would be better ? but if you’d rather not, it’s fine. i wouldn’t know which is a better option, to be fair ’

“graag gedaan.” Garrett grinned, handing the other her book, he had never been a big fan of reading, but he knew that there were people that genuinely loved it, just like he loved gardening. “Must be a pretty important book?”

at his question, a smile appeared on her face, and while she was not one to gloat she was actually proud to have that book in her possession. ‘ it has quite the history. and it’s one of the original copies from the time, has been in the author’s possession for a while. so uh -- yeah, pretty important ... ’

“now is that american football or do you mean soccer ??” clint laughed despite the tightness in his chest. it felt strange to joke with her like this after all these years, as though nothing had changed. it felt wrong and unfair but he pushed the feeling aside to focus on another one: it felt right. speaking to her, joking—god, he’d forgotten how much he missed her. “you know, the cool people call it soccer.”

but just as it was easy, it hurt. maybe he was wrong to leave back then, but the weight in his chest was something he couldn’t bare. for that, he was sorry. and he could only hope to have a fraction of what he used to with andrea ( marriage aside, they didn’t need to think about that now ).

“oh okay good,” he let out a chuckle, “i’d be concerned if you were wearing the same shoes non-stop for ten years. think about how stinky they’d be! yuck.” he waved a hand in the air, laughing to himself. anything to distract away from the weight of what had passed between them, the heaviness of how much he’s missed her and how much he both did and didn’t regret what he’d done—how he’d left. “I–” he rubbed the back of his neck, “would you want that?” he asked after a moment in a small voice. “for me to sit with you?” he imagined she wouldn’t, that she’d probably want to be alone. “I don’t want to bother you,” clint clarified.

‘ whoever calls a sport they play by using their hands ‘football’ is committing a crime against logic. ’ she remarked, voice still light and manner what could pass as playful in her book. of course, it was too subtle for most, but whoever knew andrea also knew that this was her conversing jokingly. and as much as that added to the pang of pain in her chest, andrea was sure that clint knew at least that much about her. no. actually, he knew much, much more.

a soft, quiet chuckle slipping past her lips, the princess shook her head, looking down for a moment. ‘ i’d rather not think about that, honestly. ’ she said before looking back at him, this time a genuine smile on her face. he was as silly as before, which was refreshing among all those serious people. and still so, so easy on the eye. no -- he was simply so handsome and dare she say, even more than before, which made andrea quickly look away again.

and the next moment, she was glad that she did when she heard his response. a deep blush settling on her cheeks upon his words, which sounded more like him turning the offer down politely for her overthinking self, andrea mumbled softly, ‘ if you don’t -- that’s okay. i just, ’ she cut herself off, waving a hand quickly, books hugged against her chest tighter as she felt a bit embarrassed. ‘ no it’s really not a bother but -- if you, i mean - nevermind. ’

At her friend’s hesitation, Rikke just offered her another smile and said, “It’s alright, Andi. You’re good. Take your time, I’m just messing with you a little bit. For old time’s sake.” It wasn’t entirely a lie either, but she knew from experience that Andrea was at her best when she felt at ease and if she thought she’d legitimately worried Rikke, she would be anything but. “I know you would never purposely deny my beauty,” she teased to keep the conversation light. Andi was one of the most observant and almost empathic people she knew, and Rikke knew well she’d likely picked up on everything she was trying to keep from spilling out. And the Dane felt she needed to do that now more than ever to ensure the one’s she cared about were well taken care of. Which is why as they made their way down the small backstreets Rikke had picked up on, she smiled at the offer her friend made, “I know you are, and you’re one of the few that I trust to actually listen. However, if you’re to the point that your seeking me out for a drink, then I say we give your betrothal priority and leave me for later.”

‘ of course you are. ’ she gave rikke an easy smile -- she was actually one of the very few people that andrea felt at ease with, and even then, she would sometimes feel like she was saying the wrong thing or wasn’t that much of a good friend. but she did try though, she genuinely did as rikke was quite important to her, so she allowed herself to relax and not overthing at least this once. ‘ no one would or simply could, rikke. ’ she said, hoping to contribute to rikke’s efforts to keep it light. a soft grin on her face, she walked along her friend who was leading the two currently as the german didn’t know the way. as her betrothal was brought up again, andrea let out a soft sigh, chest tightening a bit in anxiety yet she was pretty much a professional at concealing by now. ‘ that doesn’t mean my problems are any more important than yours, you know. ’ she remarked before adding. ‘ but if you’d rather i started spilling first -- well, i will really need a drink to spill more but ... the basic premise is that it’s someone from my past ... ’

“Well that’s not worrisome at all,” Rikke deadpanned, a soft smile following to let her friend she was mostly kidding….mostly. She may not have been in constant contact in their later years, be it because of work or…But Andrea would always be the sister that came along to make her the sister that Dani needed, and she had been there for her at her mother’s funeral. If something was bothering her, Rikke was going to be the shoulder she needed no matter what. “Well gee, Andi. You sure do know how to make a girl feel special,” she teased, “I promise, I wouldn’t offer to get us there if I wasn’t confident I’d get you there safely. Though, as the plan is drinks, we should probably walk so I don’t have to worry about leaving my bike there overnight.” She might be an alcoholic, but she was a functional one, and driving while intoxicated was never an idea that sounded appealing to her. Closing her chamber door behind her and, Rikke began to lead them out of the castle. “So would you like to ease into what’s on your mind or wait until after that drink?”

‘ oh nein -- it’s nothing to worry about, no harm or anything -- it’s just the ... well ... ’ she did her best to be upfront even though letting everything out explicitly was quite against her rather quiet nature but she did not want to worry rikke for nothing. well, of course the situation was far from nothing, it concerned andrea’s whole future now, but it was not a life or death situation of some kind. ‘ alright. ’ she agreed before adding clumsily. ‘ and i did not mean it like, you don’t look good. at least -- not like that, alright ? ’ she sighed, always stumbling with words. everything always sounded better in her head. walking close to the woman who she could call one of her - very, very few - closest friends, andrea bit the inside of her cheek. ‘ well, it’s about my betrothal. ’ she frowned before looking at her. ‘ and rikke, if you want to talk too ... you know i’m a good listener. ’

At the familiar sound of her name, Rikke glanced up to see her childhood friend looking rather distressed, and concern immediately washed over her. “Is everything alright, Andi?” she asked gently. At the mention of needing a drink, the redhead hesitated for only a milisecond. She shouldn’t accept, but it wasn’t like she was exactly sober anymore so… “Yeah, of course. I know a place that’s nearby. We can walk or take my bike. Whichever you’d prefer.”

‘ i don’t know ... ’ the german princess trailed off with a soft sigh before finally taking a real glance at the other, this time it was on her to be concerned. she looked just as troubled if not even more, and for a moment andrea felt bad for possibly making things worse, but maybe she could actually help by listening to her if she wished to talk or just be there for the other. ‘ you don’t look so good yourself -- you sure you can ride ? we could, uh, also take a cab or just walk, i wouldn’t mind either. ’

his mouth curved up into a soft smile, the simple sight of her elicited the response out of him. as much as he dreaded meeting her again, some part of him would always be happy to see her—to know her, talk to her. “is it ??” he chuckled, counting the books. sure enough, there were only five. “only five? wow, you’ve really changed. what’s next? are you gonna get into basketball?”

he could understand this was a little weird for her ( for both of them, and maybe weird was an understatement ). but where did he begin? what else was he supposed to say? he couldn’t be sure that andrea even wanted anything to do with him anymore. but the ache in his heart had never dulled, and she was beautiful—right here just as she was then ( he’d argue she lookedeven more beautiful, but he hadn’t thought that was possible in the first place ). it was wrong, he knew, to long for a woman he had left—for a friend…an ex-friend.

so he pushed the feeling away, and his forced his smile to grow into something foreign. “really ??? they look new,” his sharp blue eyes reflected the light above. “ja—I mean, yes. yeah. long time.” he paused, “it’s nice to see you again, andrea. I’m sorry I didn’t call.” or text, or email, or write any letters. they should probably talk about their impending engagement, but clint wasn’t going to bring it up. if he didn’t say it, they could probably just forget about it altogether. “where were you headin’?”

she didn’t want to find him funny still. she didn’t want to feel endeared upon hearing his words, she did not want to smile. yet she did, the edges of her lips tilting up ever so slightly, yet it was a genuine, humored one. shaking her head slightly, she looked down for a moment and hoped it’d pass -- but she was only kidding herself. that kind of thing would never change. ‘ i prefer football, actually. ’

all it took him to bring that usually buried deep humorous side that only clicked well with a few ( like rikke, gunnar and of course, clint ) was to just ... be. to appear back out of nowhere - well, not entirely nowhere this once - and just talk. he didn’t have to fish responses and reactions out of her like many would usually. with him, some things seemed to almost come back naturally ... and it hurt. he was the only man who had that affect on her, and he was the only man who couldn’t be.

‘ they are new, clint. i just meant that the style never changed ... ’ she trailed off. with a soft sigh she gave a small nod of her head. ‘ i didn’t try to reach out too much either... it’s okay. ’ no it wasn’t -- she gave up on waiting for him to do something because he just wouldn’t. if he gave her only the tiniest bit of ... stop. don’t, andrea. ‘ to my room for some coffee. ’ a pause, she pondered for a moment before straying her gaze away, voice almost too quiet. ‘ if you’d like to ... you can join. ’

clint felt bad about the books, he really did. he knew how much she liked them and even her habits had spread to him. he never doggy-eared a page ever again, and even when she wasn’t there, he could hear her voice echoing in his head. it was always the little things that reminded him of andrea. he’d never admitted it to francesca, but the day he’d met her, he mistook her flowing brown hair for andrea’s.

turning around was a stupid idea, she’d figure out it was him eventually.

and so, he spun back around and turned his attention on the scattered books, carefully picking each one up but not handing them over, not yet. “I’m sorry,” he repeated, unsure what else to say. maybe he’d just pretend he was someone else? not clint, but some other sad-looking man who’d greyed a little early. someone else with the same voice and body, but another heart. ( he couldn’t though, he couldn’t pretend he didn’t know andrea no matter the stakes ) clint traced his fingers over the cover of one of the books, regarding it fondly before he finally related ownership and handed it off. “I’d ask why you’re carrying so many books but I don’t think I’ve ever seen you without at least ten books by your side,” he chuckled softly, hand stuffed into his pockets. his words unspoken hung in the air: how are you, I missed you, did you hear the news, I’m so sorry, I wish I was bolder; I wish I was a different man. instead he settled on: “nice shoes.”

even before he turned around, she knew who it was. of course it wasn’t like he had not changed one bit ( at least his figure from the back ) or that his voice was all the same. no, she could sense the changes that time brought but also, it was as if she felt him. it was as if decades could pass and she could still recognise him in a sea of people with ease. that only was enough to let an ache settle in her chest. nothing had changed right there.

when he turned around, her emerald hues caught sight of the seas of his irises at first, which striked her on the spot, it was like lightning bold against her skin. words getting caught in her own throat as he kept speaking, andrea remained stuck on her spot, watching him collect the last few of her books until he finally reached to give them back to her. that was when she managed to stray her eyes off him, lips pressed together in a soft pout as she didn’t know how to react. but she knew she had to give some kind of a response. ‘ it’s only five today. ’

after the failed attempt at dry humour, the german princess hugged the books to her chest, another habit of hers, letting her gaze trace back to his. ‘ i’ve been wearing the same kind of shoes for the last decade, clint. ’ she remarked, his name on her lips feeling strange yet so warm, making the ache grow stronger. ‘ long time, ja ? ’

“Hey! Excuse me!” Garrett called out, jogging to catch up with the person at the other of the hall. “Hi. Sorry, I believe you dropped this.” Holding out the object in his hand for the other to take.

hearing the voice, andrea turned around to look at the man catching up to her with one of her most beloved books in his hand. a soft sigh of relief that he came across it, andrea reached to take it. ‘ oh -- vielen dank ! i would not forgive myself if i lost it ... ’

‘ rikke, ’ she greeted politely despite her state, way too messy and unlike her usual self, way too distracted. walking up to the danish princess whom she had known almost her whole life, she felt bad for a moment about possibly spreading her own problems around by even bringing down the mood and wondered if it would have been better if she just sat back in her room, but she was here now. with a soft sigh, the german rubbed her temple. ‘ i think i might need a drink. ’

andrea. andrea. andrea. the name rang in his ears the second he’d heard it on the other end of the call. his father sounded so happy, so delighted to let him know that they’d managed a betrothal to an old friend. said it would be easier. but it wasn’t, and he couldn’t be mad. they didn’t know. he didn’t tell them. he didn’t tell anyone. he joined the armed forces and refused to answer calls. when he came back, there was so little left of him to try and piece together…and now this ??? clint bit back the urge to scream. it was some joke. it had to be.

but he would run from this too, this feeling of suffocation and tightness in his chest. just like he did back then; it was no different now. he’d pretend he didn’t hear his father right, ask the advisers to give him anyone else—a n y o n e a t a l l . he’d get through this, he’d—

“oof—” he collided into someone as he speeded down the hall. “I’m so sorry, I wasn’t watching where I was going.” ever the gentleman, his hand went out, ready to assist whoever he’d just crashed into….until he saw her face, and the only thing left for him to do was spin around so she couldn’t see his. “s-sorry! I’m actually busy so if you could pick yourself up that’d be great!” —— ( @andreavk )

since andrea found out about just who she was betrothed to, all little focus she had after coming to buckingham was thrown out the window immediately. clint. she could still hear her parents’ excitement in her ears -- they were so delighted that they had managed to arrange an engagement with the canadian prince, someone who she had grown up with, someone who she could technically be more at ease and less her rather awkward self.

but the german princess couldn’t project the same excitement herself. just the opposite, she was nervous, anxious -- sad, even. given their history ( or lack of it, for a better term perhaps ) it was only natural.

so with the distraction, it wasn’t a wonder why the accident happened. her books scattering around, andrea let out a soft cry after the impact, but she was less worried about a bruise and more for her books. ‘ nein, oh gott -- ’ she quickly began to collect the books, not registering the voice for a second. but then, she stopped abruptly, looking at the man who had his back to her now. too familiar. way too familiar. oh no. ‘ wait. ’

Rikke couldn’t help the small surge of pride that came at hearing Andrea’s validation of her and Felix’s resemblance, and she was sure it shone on her face as well. “Thank you,” she said in earnest, “It’s not everyday I get to hear that, so it really does mean a lot.” The redhead could sense that there would be no use to her usual hard-shell attitude towards most people she met. Not here. And that knowledge reassured her in a way, as this would be the person her brother would be bringing to rule her home.

“I’m sure things will find a way to settle once I find out who I’m going to be marrying,” Rikke agreed. “After all, the root of all fears is really just the fear of the unknown, right?” She listened as the princess described how her own time at the palace had been eased by Felix, and another proud smile came over her features, if a bit softer this time. “He comes off as a goofball to most, but he truly does have the most caring nature. I know you’ll likely think my opinion biased, but you’re in good hands with him.”

‘ oh ? that is surprising. it’s not too hard to see the resemblance in the eyes, especially. ’ or, unknown to her, andrea was just more of an observer than most. after all, she had spent pretty much all her life in the backs of every room, away from conversations with strangers especially, which came with many disadvantages but one good thing she gained out of it was perhaps her observation skills. the same skill which now allowed her to feel a bit more relaxed, depending on the other’s initial reactions and responses to her.

‘ i see you haven’t figured out yet ... i hope you will soon, i don’t imagine it to be pleasant to be left in the dark, especially about something as important as this. ’ she gave rikke a sympathetic smile, a nod of her head following as an agreement to her next statement. ‘ he sure is ... different. in a good way, that is. ’ an ungraceful blush spreading across her cheeks, the princess looked down as she continued. ‘ i know. you are not biased, i agree with that statement. or ... perhaps i too am biased by now. ’

Rikke met her nervous chuckle with a soft smile of her own. The redhead could see traces of herself in the social awkwardness, and knew that it always helped her personally to be reassured that the other people involved weren’t being judgemental. She of course didn’t know the other princess well, but she hoped extending the same courtesy would set her at ease a little.

“Makes sense,” she said, “We’ve been told we resemble each other so much we’re practically twins.” Though her tone remained pleasant and even, the glint in her eye and the smirk that followed sealed the fact that the obvious joke was exactly that, a joke. “As well as things can be when in a foreign country under the given circumstances,” she replied. Not entirely a lie. “How are you faring during your stay?”

her easy manner making andrea relax a bit and loosen the knuckle whitening grip on the hard cover book on her lap, the german princess sat more comfortably, looking less like she was about to bolt any moment now. at her joke, she chuckled again, finding the dane’s gaze once more. ‘ you do resemble each other a bit, actually. ’ she commented with a soft smile, quickly looking over her features to confirm herself.

‘ i can understand. ’ she said with a nod of her head -- she herself was basically the personification of all the mixed feelings the royals had here. ‘ i hope it gets better for you through your stay. ’ she wished gently. ‘ well, it’s pleasant. at least now, i believe i can say i got used to it. thanks to um -- your brother, actually - he’s been ... ’ lost for words for a moment, andrea paused, the smile softer now. ‘ really helpful and nice. ’

Recognition dawned on Rikke’s face as the person turned to face her. The Dane immediately felt a tinge of guilt at the sight of how startled the woman was, looking for all intents and purposes like she could take off at the slightest of provocations. And that was certainly not how she wanted her first interaction with her future sister-in-law to go.

Making to sit on the other end of the bench herself she reached out a hand and said, “No, no. You’re perfectly fine. Andrea, right?” she asked by way of introduction. “I’m Rikke, Felix’s second in command,” the redhead joked with a small smirk. “You’re honestly more than welcome to stay, there’s plenty of solace for us to share…if that’s alright with you, of course.”

it was not rocket science to pinpoint the exact moment the recognition dawned on rikke’s face and andrea wasn’t sure if it was supposed to relax her or make her feel even more worried but the latter was what happened regardless. as she didn’t know the princess well enough, she wasn’t sure just how to act around her, which peaked her anxiety.

‘ andrea, correct ... ’ she trailed off as she settled next to the other, giving a small yet sincere smile -- at least she was friendly so far. ‘ i know -- i mean, not the second in command part, of course, but who you are -- as in, felix’s sister ... ’ a nervous chuckle later, the german was already avoiding the other’s gaze. ‘ so um -- i hope all is well with you ? ’

“i told him about the time i charmed my way out of detention. he said i got out of it only because the teacher pitied me,” lia explained. she knew not to take what leo said to heart, knowing he was only teasing. “felix? as in your arranged?” the brunette asked, surprised. “do you… do you think he’s handsome? do you want to have his babies?”

‘ well ... what’s the real story there ? ’ she asked teasingly, though her teasing was too innocent against their brother’s brutal one. at her sister’s questions andrea blushed furiously, swallowing. ‘ i -- where does all that come from ? ’ she stammered before avoiding eye contact. ‘ it wouldn’t be fair to him if i denied that he is handsome, indeed... and uh - i’m sure we’ll need to provide heirs for the throne at some point, as he’s the crown prince. why’d you ask that ? ’

Rikke had been sitting on the ground in one of the gardens, using the rather large stone bench currently behind her as a means of privacy. Or maybe as a means to hide, she hadn’t quite settled on which. With the knowledge that Dani was safe for the moment -she’d left her with Andreas- Rikke had allowed herself a moment to step away from it all. At least as much as she could manage.

Granted she hadn’t really expected that anyone else would be seeking the same solace -which in retrospect as asinine- so the sound of someone actually sitting on the bench had her instinctively reach for her hip…only to find nothing there, because of course. The redhead popped her head up slightly to get a glimpse at who it was, but they were facing the opposite direction. “This must be a more popular spot than I gave it credit for,” she said by way of introduction.

ever since she stepped foot here, andrea had found this particular spot in the gardens to be her favorite as it was relatively more isolated than the rest -- hard for people to pay attention to or wander off to and stumble upon her with her nose in yet another book again. so, basically, it was the perfect place for andrea to read in peace, without any judgements from other royals or teasings of her siblings. and so far, it had remained that way, no one had disturbed her peace ...

... till now. startled by the voice behind her, she jumped in her skin before whipping around to look at the other with her blue eyes slightly widened, hard cover book pressed against her chest. what got her heart beating wilder, though, was the recognition. henrikke -- one of felix’s sisters. surely, the two of them never really got close or anything unlike their older brothers who had been best friends but andrea did know who she was. swallowing, she could feel her cheeks reddening, something resembling fight or flight settling down her stomach. ‘ uh -- i um ... ’ she struggled. ‘ i could just leave, i wouldn’t want to disturb you -- really ... ’
