New Year's Resolution
Started my "no hairpiece challenge". Basically, I challenged myself to braiding my hair without any hairpiece and so far I've done one protective style that I am going to unbraid soon and I'll be sure to post the results. Before I did this protective style, I went to the salon to blow dry my hair out to give a real nice stretch. I was happy with the results. I can finally tie my hair up without it looking like I'm "raping" my hair, lmao. I'll post the results of my hair and my protective hairstyle too. As you will be able to see in the pictures, my hairline is terrible, but come to think of it it was worse before and now its slowly improving.
So far, I've untwisted my bantu knots twice, because I did the style twice and I've moved on to a new protective hairstyle three days ago.
I decided that another simple protective hairstyle I can do is twists with my hair. I underwent the normal washing process that I usually do and I did really really thin twists all over my head. They look a bit weird but hey, not every protective style has to be cute. Besides, it's not like I'm going anywhere, I'm spending the last bit of my holidays in the crib.
I intend on keeping this style for about 2 weeks or maybe shorter since I plan on doing wool dreads. My sister is going to implant them so that my hairline does not get pulled by the hair salon ladies if they implant them. I'll either style my hair by myself or get it done at the salon.
For 2015 my goal is to go without braiding with hairpieces, because I suspect that may be the cause of my hairline receding.
#Naturalhair: Lining Your Winter Hats.
A great way to protect your hair from the Winter weather is to line your hats with satin. Hats protect your hair from the elements, but the lining will protect the moisture in your hair from getting absorbed by your woolly, furry, cottony winter hats. You can also take a Summer beanie and make it Winter-ready like I did here. It was pretty simple, cheap and used minimal hand sewing skills (like, hardly any)! I sewed some printed fabric into my beanie, but if you want to avoid the hassle of having to measure out fabric, simply take a silk bonnet and hand stitch that to the inside of your hat. I found a YouTube video where the vlogger uses fabric glue, but I find sewing to be more ‘sturdy.’
Bonus: Use a really fun print fabric for contrast or to spice up your hat!
Bantu girl
I tried out the Bantu Knots for the first time ever and I must say I was pretty excited to do them. They didn't turn out to be the way I expected them to be like, but I some of them actually looked like the way it should be.
I had a lot of frizz and not much curls with my first Bantu Knots. I left them in over about 2 nights and my sister helped me untwist them. I'm gonna repeat this: there was a lot of frizz. That didn't matter anyway. To cover it up it was put into a style with bobby pins holding up the sides and it became my Bantu Frizzy Mohawk. Hehehehe.I'm just glad that I can finally put my hair into an easy protective hairstyle that can be worn both ways: in the knot form and as my frizzy hair.
I shouldn't be too hard on myself for it not turning out perfect, I mean like c'mon... It is my first time doing this hairstyle. I intend on practicing doing this protective hairstyle until I perfect it. As a matter of fact, I did them again on my head the night after they were untwisted. I went to sleep with them and now I still have them on my head.
The journey
I've been natural for almost my whole life. I began to grow my dreadlocks from age four. They were healthy, but not at the level that I now come to realize. I braided them into a protective style very often. In fact, about once a month. Sometimes I would leave the loose to get some air. I eventually cut them off in grade 5 to try out something new and that's when I had my big chop. I started off with a TWA.
