December 11th 2022 will mark the 10th anniversary of Midnight Menagerie so to celebrate I've been doing double-updates on Mondays and Thursdays. There will be a new page tomorrow so I hope folks will check it out. I try to be whizbang and marketable about the story but here's the real description of Midnight Menagerie:

Shawn (the very cute red-head) is basically a human puppy with major league anxiety about his life and future because he's about the start college and feels his life is a big ridiculous farce because his family is absurdly rich, and he doesn't want to be one of those guys that will become just another douchebag with money.

He meets Romero (the hot guy with the ponytail) who runs a store that specializes in horror collectibles, which works out very nicely for Shawn as he is a huge horror nerd. Through shenanigans (read the comic!!!!) Shawn ends meeting a bunch of monsters (who are all gay) whom Shawn befriends. The joke being, they're gay...he's not.

But they'll be damned if they won't fight over his attention anyway, constantly undercutting each other.

Oh, and Shawn is a human lightning rod for supernatural activity, constantly stumbling ass backwards into adventures with various entities and people who end up trying to kill him, or up his friend (and sometimes both).

Midnight Menagerie, gay monster disasters and their new human buddy nearly dying from the things that go bump in the night.

The Ultimate Dialogue Secret

Psst… has anyone ever told you the ultimate secret about dialogue?👀

No? Well here it is.

The secret to writing good dialogue is “illusion of reality.”

What does that mean? Put plainly, it means that good dialogue is written in a way that reads realistically, but isn’t really realistic.

This means you would never write dialogue in the way that people actually speak. And there are many reasons for this: - people tend to trail off and forget themselves - they often never finish a single sentence they start - ah, um, like, so, like, uhhh… - people repeat themselves all the time, they make the same point over and over again

So why don’t we write like this? Because on the page, this would be incredibly difficult to read. It would be exhausting and confusing. So how do we get around this?

We create the illusion of reality. We keep the dialogue succinct, and to the point, but make it feel conversational. The best way to do this is to create unique character voices for the characters in your book who speak the most. Think of varying: - the length of sentences - the amount of time the character is comfortable speaking for - the specific vocabulary the character uses - the tone in which they speak - the tendencies they have (personality)

A great way to practice this is to go over your dialogue once you’ve written it with your inner editor!

Cross out all the fluff words, see where you can cut things short, and whether you even need that third sentence in the character’s line.

You will often find you can express things a lot better, the less you say.

⭐️Siren + Frink ⭐️

I absolutely love these two , they’re some of my favourite ocs. They haven’t shown up yet in the comic but they will later down the line. They’re both part of a guild of sorts, more on that later!

Cause of work, I ended up working on the comic pretty late last night. I’m trying to make more dynamic panelling for this next chapter. This one will be longer than the first two, so I want to take my time on it so the pacing is right .
