‘Assimilation, Appropriation, Authenticity’, 2020, 5ft x 4ft oil painting on gesso stretched canvas. . THE FINAL PROJECT FOR THIS SEMESTER!!! I wanted to have fun with this last project and explore the various styles associated with Postmodernism. I build up a collage of symbolic imagery that I wanted to act as appropriations but at the same time have them battle the idea of assimilation. All this while trying to stay authentic to oneself. It’s a self portrait, the struggle of trying to be everything at once and figuring out what is real and fake. I layered the imagery to amplify the illusion of depth and what is in front or behind the viewer. My self portrait is looking right at you, challenging you to choose between one or the other. The golden apples are a gift from Eris the goddess of Discord. There are remnants of my culture, almost being erased but at the same time becoming more prominent. Which snake is real? What object is the foreground and what is the background?! Do we assimilate and destroy our authenticity? The art classes at Otis have been teaching me different ways of viewing art and performances that I did not experience at El Camino. “Accidental Haven”, 2020 @otiscollege @otisfinearts . I wanted to thank all my classmates who critiqued my work and gave their perspective of this piece! I like the challenges that were brought up and the items that I could’ve translated differently. Can’t wait for the next project! . Our topic for project one was to perform domesticity with wood. My idea was to take the taxidermy animal mount and make it feminine. The animal mounts are often seen as masculine trophies and I wanted mine to challenge that idea. I presented it in a mock home stage, where it can read as an altar in order to translate my cultures idea of the dead. Death is something to celebrate and even though the unicorn is dead, in a way it looks like it’s escaping domestic home decor. I also made the unicorn brown because they’re always depicted as white, and it’s time to change the notion of purity linked with the color white. Decorate your home however you’d like!
