Yes, I have written a research paper before for my Women’s Study class and it was about Congress, a place full of white men, still making decisions on women’s health, even though they most likely do not know how the female reproductive system works, but I guess ((-: I was actually really interested in it, since their decisions affect me, as a female, and I found a lot of resources that could back up my argument as to why men need to stop making decisions that affect women and their health/bodies. It is similar to this research paper because I was interested in both and they do relate to me, one was about women’s health that does affect me and the other was about gun control, which relates to me and so many other people who should NOT fear for their lives anywhere, that includes schools, malls, and festivals - there have been many school shootings with military based guns and that needs to change. They were both easy to write about and I could express my thoughts and opinions in both due to being personally affected by the decisions of Congress and the government, in general. As like any other paper, I find it hard to start it and make a good intro, but I get over it, so I’m not that worried for this research paper.

First I had to find a topic that interested me and something that I could relate to, in a way. I chose to do the topic on immigration, which I could talk about since it is a topic that I know about and have personal experiences with. After finding the topic (through a music video), I looked for reliable resources and picked out the ones I could use as examples. Lastly, I wrote my paper and included things that many people, not just me, could relate to. Some successes that I had were being interested enough to write about a topic that involves millions of people in the country and being able to write about how productive they are to this country and that they are one of the most hardworking people. A difficulty that I had was starting the paper, but as soon as I found a way to start it, it was easy to continue. I don’t think that I would change a thing on my paper because I liked the way it turned out.

To get past that, I tried to read the previous things I had typed to see where I was going with my ideas - sometimes I remember exactly what I was going to write, other times not so much but I try.

I think that the holiday that is so silly and stupid is Cinco de Mayo. I find it ironic how there are many Americans who are racists towards Mexicans, but those same Americans are the ones celebrating Cinco de Mayo like it’s the Fourth of July and getting drunk. It also makes me pressed how they will wear Mexican apparel, like sombreros, ponchos, and even fake mustaches to mimic Mexicans. Cinco de Mayo is a ‘holiday’ that Americans swear they respect and celebrate it by drinking tequila and mimicking Mexicans and their accents, but it’s not even theirs to claim, especially as a holiday. I find it offensive because of my ethnic background, mostly when white people use it to their benefit. Honestly, like it’s okay for Mexicans to celebrate it, because it’s their victory, but I don’t think it should be celebrated here by Americans, especially if they don’t even know the reason behind it. They just find an excuse to drink.

To be honest, yes, I have changed the way I sound, speak, and act around different people. For example, when I’m with my friends and family, I can be this very outgoing and outspoken person. When I’m around new people, however, I tend to shy away and keep to myself. I feel like if I were to behave just like I do with my friends, someone would find me immature or annoying, unlike my friends, who have gotten to know me and tolerate me. But it’s all so I can feel comfortable around strangers without embarrassing myself.

I have actually found myself close reading and it was mostly because I remembered quotes from a book that I liked and wanted to write it somewhere on a journal or for a self-boost in confidence. Sometimes I would even miss the quote that I was searching for and not realize it, other times I would skim through it, rather than read from the beginning. I used to do it back in high school with books assigned for reading or books that I enjoyed.

I’m not very confident in my writing and I’ve got to admit, sometimes it stresses me out when I do have to write, especially reasearch papers. I feel like it’s not good enough and that I could do better, but I just don’t know how to properly do it without ruining it. Over the years, through high school and now, I can see that I have improved, but I still struggle with putting my thoughts into words and creating a great essay. I do hope that I learn how to enhance my writing skills and be more confident while doing so.
