An’katerr Surnames
Telvan Telvanite surnames can get a bit strange, but are easy enough to identify if you know what to look for. The imperial house is easily identified by its surname of Nilkarath. Taking their cue from that family, all the noble families in Telvan have a surname that begins with the letter N. EX: Chounen’s surname in Najila, marking her as nobility Another common characteristic seen in their surnames is a double ‘i'. EX: Nahiro Tanthriil Lower class surnames tend to be very short EX: Nalshen Rael Surnames: Alvacy, Rael, Tanthriil, Najila, Nilkarath, Variel, Avirel, Sahiil, Devanaliil, Suthriim Doval Dovalian nobility are easily identified by the characteristic apostrophe at the beginning of the name. EX: The surname used by the Imperial house is d’Wolvam. All nobles have a similar style, but only the imperial house uses the letter d at the beginning. Other characteristics seen in Dovalian surnames are a doubled ‘u’ EX: Ashaniel Maruuq Surnames: Maruuq, d’Wolvam, n’Varis, Lidol, Dubar, Eleis, Kaluus, e’Laris, Adruus, Falcorsi, Rualii, n’Tariil, i'Velidon Shanshiire Kasheran surnames were once heavily gendered. This trend has mostly faded away, but it’s still in use by the nobility and some of the upper classes. A male is indicated with the prefix fal while the feminine is nil. EX: Kishandren nil Tanjalaar, Kenjariyo fal Tanjalaar Surnames: nil Tanjalaar, fal Tanjalaar, Amshedra, Medrolik, Zalityu Nobility here tend to have long and complex surnames. EX: The longest on record currently is the Imperial family’s: Calvethalen de Zavriel-Ensiyu Common surnames all have a ‘y’ towards the end. EX: Travoy Surnames: Calvethalen de Zavriel-Ensiyu, Travoy, Demyal, Najey, Prityel, Alvey Jiinal The Jiinalese don’t use surnames, but to avoid confusion they will use their place of origin in place of one. EX: Valaktisho of Coral Bay
The Kasheran People
The Kasheran people of Shanshiire are predominantly dark skinned with black hair and dark eyes (usually browns and greys). Once in awhile, one will have lighter eyes or a blond one will pop up. While lighter eyes aren’t all that remarkable, blond hair is unfavourable. Before the Beginning of Days, the Kasheran people used to steal people from what is now Jiinal. The Jiinalese are also darker skinned, but they’re dominantly blond. While this practice was in place, blond children would often be born to the Kasheran people. The gene for blond hair remained in the population although it’s very recessive now and doesn’t assert itself as often as it used to. Blonds are unlucky in the Kasheran culture. Exceptions are only made for blonds born outside their country, but even then they’re treated with a degree of suspicion. The current Crown Prince attempted to dispel that superstition by marrying a princess of Jiinal. The Imperial House of Shanshiire has often married nobility from Jiinal, so blonds show up in that family more often than in any other family line in the country. The most recent example of that being Princess Aldiara. Typically, parents will abandon blond children, leaving them to fend for themselves on the streets to avoid the stigma of having one in the family. Wealthier families will sometimes keep them, depending on their social status at the time. Blonds are encouraged to not marry or have offspring in an attempt to wipe out the unfavourable gene.

Black lung
Black lung is an illness caused by the inhalation of spores from the ash flower, common in the wooded areas of Telvan. Normally, inhaling these spores won't do more than irritate the throat and lungs and cause a mild cough. In the elderly and the very young, these spores can be quite dangerous as they don't have the strength to fight off infection. The spores set in and multiply. If not treated immediately, the spores will continue to multiply, causing fluid build-up in the lungs. Death occurs in all untreated cases. These spores can be treated with a medicine made from avola root, kaldora mushroom oil, weeping pine sap, and sardoren leaves. Typically, these things are made into a syrup and flavoured with a variety of fruit flavours in an attempt to mask the bitter taste

Travel gear
People by and large don’t tend to travel very far from their homes as there’s an ever present danger of bandit attacks. When they do go, they travel in larger groups for safety. Food and water and always carried and at least one person in the group is armed. Depending on the length of the journey other items likely to be found in a travel pack are: a firestarter of some kind, a portable shelter, money, spare clothing, grooming tools, handkerchiefs, and small tools.
The Frontier
Every so often, someone gets it into their heads to try and explore out to sea. By which they mean setting sail straight out to sea to see what else is out there beyond the continent they live on and the islands that make up Jiinal. Of course, none of these poor souls are ever heard from again and it’s generally assumed that their ships have sunk, been caught in a storm, or simply fell off the edge of the world as the common belief at the time is that the world is flat. It’s a belief that wouldn't be disproven for a long time to come. A common euphemism for a fool’s errand or act of deep stupidity is anything along the lines of getting on a ship and going out to sea. Likewise, if you were wishing someone to go away you would tell them to do something like that. As far as the folk of An’katerr are concerned, their world doesn’t extend very far out into the ocean.
