So, there is something that blows my mind about how fast technology moves. One of my professors, probably 35-45, was telling us that one of the school’s professor emeritus came to her one day and said, “Can…can you explain DNA to me?” and she was honestly so baffled that he didn’t know much about it but…

The structure of DNA wasn’t identified until 1953

Textbooks are roughly 15 years behind current technologies at any given time

Given he was Emeritus, he was likely about 70 years old placing his birth date at 1943.

He would have been 10 years old when the structure was identified

But textbooks wouldn’t have caught up until he was roughly 25

By which time he had already graduated with a B.Sc and was concentrating on polymer science

So, there’s kind of like a very strange gap and even the most educated people could miss something huge because of timing and the lag involved with current sciences versus educational materials. And there you are, which years of experience that out number the years your students have been alive and they all take this DNA thing for granted. It must be so weird.

So weird to think about it...

Geography: It was only in the 60s that we finally accepted the plate tectonic theories.

Just think about all the stuff we don’t know. In fifty years, I’ll be such a confused grandma.
