trying to find a mockingjay fic…
So I’m trying to find a mockingjay fic where katniss was taken by the capitol and shes afraid of water when they get her back to district 13. It’s from Peeta’s POV and he’s the only person Katniss feels safe around. I remember there was a scene where he helped her bathe (nothing sexual) and another scene where they’re in a meeting and she sits on his lap, I think. She’s basically non-verbal with anyone else but him. I think it was only a few chapters long. I’ve been looking everywhere and I can’t seem to find it but I really liked how the situation was portrayed — help?!
Update: FOUND!! Thanks @write-on-me-forever and everyone else who reached out!

”peeta will never love katniss as much as he used to post-war” SHUT UPPPPPPP
(edited it to clear up everything in the reposts 😭😭)
And what if I told you that Katniss declaring, ‘I know this would have happened anyway,’ is not just her saying that even without the bomb, without the Quell, without the Games—even in another life—it still would have been the boy with the bread? That this boy who gave her everything is her soulmate? The same girl who never saw the point of what-ifs is telling us that, even in another world, it still would have been the dandelion of the spring. What then?
“So it’s starting again?” she says. “Like before?”
I’d like to see Sunrise of the Reaping focus on the “before” Mrs. Everdeen and Haymitch are alluding to when they talk after Gale’s whipping.
Haymitch was a significant player in the Games’ history. He used the arena to win (the second act of survival by a District 12 victor that would have sparked rebellion; he was the first victor (at least that’s what I interpreted from the text in Mockingjay) that was propositioned by Snow; and he was likely the reason for the “before” I mentioned. I’m sure propaganda and manipulating the history of the past increased after his Games, which would go along with what Collins has said about the theme of SOTR.
I never post here and I am not an experienced theorist on this platform, but I figured I would try my hand and share some possibilities that have come to my mind about how this story might play out.
THEORIES
Multiple POVs: I’ve seen a lot of people suggesting that SOTR won’t be from Haymitch’s POV and I agree… to a certain extent. I am not the biggest fan of books with multiple POVs (I feel like the stories are often stretched out too far and can be a disservice to the story) and I know we haven’t seen Collins do this with a THG book, but I think it would be a useful tool to show the effect of propaganda. So here are the people I think we should hear from and why: 1. Caesar Flickerman — propaganda from the source 2. Mrs. Everdeen — propaganda witnessed by an audience member 3. Haymitch Abernathy — victor that caused a new influx of propaganda and government control
The Plot Now that I’ve introduced the POV idea, I’ll do a play-by-play for how I might make the story go: We start from Caesar’s POV. It’s Reaping Day, the first big moment for the Games. Through Caesar, we would see all (or at least ones that are most relevant to the themes of the book) the districts’ ceremonies. There would be a range in the style of the ceremonies and the audience reactions especially between Career and non-Career districts. (I don’t want to make things too cluttered so I don’t think I would do an audience perspective for the Reaping, too. If there was, I’d want Mrs. Everdeen to see her reaction to Maysilee Donner being chosen, but that’s a personal hope to see her and it may not be a service to the theme really.) Still with Caesar, we cut to the beginning of the Games. I don’t think it’s necessary to see the trains, training, or interviews, necessarily. I think things would’ve transitioned from what we saw in TBSOAS to something more akin to how things work with these things in THG. So Caesar is prepping for another Games. Maybe we hear some conversations he has with Gamemakers and sponsors in addition to his own personal dialogue. Is he still becoming the charismatic host that we know in THG? Does he have any moments where he questions what he’s doing? But he gets to work. The announcements are made, the bombs go off, and the Games begin. Disclaimer: I’ve been debating this POV since the announcement for SOTR came out. Like I said before about multiple POVs, this might stretch things too far (unless we’re lucky to get a book that’s 1,000+ pages!!), but I thought I’d put it out there. Mrs. Everdeen lives in horror watching her best friend fight for her life in a death arena. While she’s watching we could see Capitol commercials promoting sponsors, bets, and special promotions for different companies that are themed on the Games (like seeing commercials that are themed for the Super Bowl or Christmas). We would witness what an audience member would be seeing (not just the glimpses we get of Snow watching out for his tribute for his own selfish reasons). Now this might be a distraction from the plot, but I’d love to see some Mrs. Everdeen/Mr. Everdeen/Mr. Mellark moments. From what we’ve heard and seen, they’re all against the Games. But I think it would be interesting to see Mr. Everdeen’s little acts of musical rebellion, Mrs. Everdeen’s fear of his being caught and her fear for Maysilee, and maybe show a contrast between Mr. Everdeen’s behavior and Mr. Mellark’s. I think there’s a multigenerational theme that could be explored here with Katniss/Peeta/Gale and the parents. We could see how Mr. Everdeen was Seam like Gale but compassionate like Peeta; Mrs. Everdeen didn’t see a way to change things like Katniss; Mr. Mellark was content to settle with Town life and endure the Capitol’s threats but maybe lacked Peeta’s passion for the preservation of personal morality. Different responses to the earlier mentioned commercials, etc? (I’m Team Everlark/Peeta all the way, BTW!) This would happen after Mrs. Everdeen’s POV (or maybe another audience members POV from a Career district) or right after Caesar’s. Cut to Haymitch’s POV. It’s his final fight in the Games. We see him bleeding out, throwing the axe, and becoming the victor. He goes home and has to face Snow’s propositions, the deaths due to his refusals, and the resulting depression and the beginning of the jaded drunk man we meet in THG. Witness what “like before” entailed, an erasure of Haymitch’s “act of rebellion”, radical people on the Victory Tour if we go that far, etc.
I know that was a bit long-winded and not necessarily the clearest plot, but those are some thoughts I’ve had. I’m no author, just a passionate fan of The Hunger Games series and the lessons it seeks to teach its readers. Suzanne Collins will create an amazing story that will be profound and special and I can’t wait to witness it.

peeta sacrifices his life to take on cato to save katniss, surely thinking that katniss is the only one with any chance of going home. katniss sacrifices her life in order to get the medicine for peeta's leg, determined to get peeta out.
peeta is set on protecting katniss in the quarter quell, knowing it means his death. katniss is determined to save peeta, knowing that it means her family, the people she is set to protect from the beginning, will not have her anymore.
peeta and katniss both become puppets of opposite sides of a war, hoping to offer a little protection to the other in exchange for their obedience.
both of them see their deaths as a way to save the other. But, it never could. katniss's death could never save peeta just as his death could never save her. they are both wrong. they would essentially die with each other. if one were to die, the other would be sentenced to a life in misery.
in mockingjay, once peeta realized that he failed his initial ideal in the hunger games and was turned into a murdering monster by the capital, he begged for death. he begged katniss to kill him, seeing that there was nothing left to live for. yet, katniss refused him.
when katniss realized that she failed to save prim, thinking that there was nothing left to live for, she reached for the nightlock pill and instead found peeta's hand.
now this might just be my emotions talking, but i think that the sentiments that katniss and peeta felt during the beach scene in catching fire were very much there in "the hunger games" of mockingjay. both knew, deep down, that a world without the other would be miserable.
in the end, i think that they realized in many ways how much they needed each other. it is not enough for them to die for the other. they could not allow the other person to die.
My heart 😭
Katniss isn’t the mockingjay… but her children are
I don’t mean to insinuate that Katniss isn’t the central character of The Hunger Games series or that she isn’t the catalyst for a revolution or the symbol of rebellion to her people. She is all of those things and more. She is cast by the rebellion as the Mockingjay, and she comes to identify as that role, albeit reluctantly. I would argue, though, that she just isn’t the mockingjay. There’s a qualitative difference between the two. One capital letter can make a world of difference. So let’s talk more about that little “m.”
The Hunger Games is, among other things, a treatise on how we, as a society, care (or don’t) for our children. It’s a pacifist call to stop using our children in the theater of war. This is corroborated when Katniss thinks, “[S]omething is significantly wrong with a creature that sacrifices its children to settle its differences.” She even comes to embrace what Peeta cautioned against in his first Capitol interview, that humans as she knows them ought to die off so that “some decent species [can] take over.” (MJ 377)
This new species of human is the mockingjay.
Suzanne Collins goes through great pains to relay a few basic truths to the reader from the outset of The Hunger Games:
Katniss is a “mini me” version of her deceased father. Whereas her mother and sister are delicate and fair like the merchant class, Katniss is Seam Strong: she’s not only darkly complected like her father, but she shares his rebellious and free spirit. There is nothing merchant class about Katniss. She is, to her core, Seam.
Katniss can’t bear the thought of having children in the world she knows. If it strikes you as odd that Suzanne Collins would have a 16-year-old girl talking about having (or not having) children within the first several pages of the series, then you’re onto something. This is an overarching theme and preoccupation, and it’s perhaps the most important one to Katniss as a character. Having, or not having children, is representative of Katniss’ future. By not wanting to have children, she is resisting the system in the only way she can as a disenfranchised person. It’s her way of opting out of the future altogether.
There is a specific mythology behind the mockingjay as a species, and Suzanne Collins wants us to get it exactly right. (we’ll talk about that more in a sec).
Why do these three points matter?
Let’s start with the mythology behind the mockingjay. Here’s what Collins tells us:
“They’re… something of a slap in the face to the Capitol. During the rebellion, the Capitol bred a series of genetically altered animals as weapons. The common term for them was muttations, or sometimes mutts for short. One was a special bird called a jabberjay that had the ability to memorize and repeat whole human conversations. They were homing birds, exclusively male, that were released into regions where the Capitol’s enemies were known to be hiding. After the birds gathered words, they’d fly back to centers to be recorded. It took people awhile to realize what was going on…Then, of course, the rebels fed the Capitol endless lies, and the joke was on it. So the centers were shut down and the birds were abandoned to die off in the wild.
Only they didn’t die off. Instead, the jabberjays mated with female mockingbirds, creating a whole new species that could replicate both bird whistles and human melodies.” (THG 42-43)
Apologies for the extended quote! But this is some heavy stuff… it’s the heart and soul of the series. The Capitol creates a weapon against its people, the male jabberjay, a bird excellent with words. Ultimately the jabberjay proves useless to the Capitol- worse than useless, even. Destructive. The rebels use it for their own cause. And then the jabberjay mates with the female mockingbird and creates a new species that should never have existed. Suzanne Collins might as well have put a “spoiler alert” before this paragraph. This foreshadows exactly what happens in the series. And she just told us on page 42. That saucy minx.
Katniss is the mockingbird. She isn’t a mutt of anything; she is purely her father, a product of the Seam. She is so “Seam” she is practically a monolith. As a child, she overhears her father singing and spouting anti-Capitol political rhetoric, and she replicates his call, getting scolded by her mother. (THG 6, MJ 123) When her father would sing, all the birds would stop to listen to him. And lo and behold!, the same is true of Katniss. (THG 301). Throughout the series, Katniss only ever sings the songs her father taught her, those she heard as a child. She doesn’t have a song of her own. The mockingbird, in literature, symbolizes innocence and purity. And, despite the countless horrible things Katniss thinks about herself, she is an innocent. She isn’t privy to the political machinations of the adults around her. She doesn’t even know the content of her own heart. She’s pure (but for Peeta she’s perfect).
….Which brings us to Peeta. He is the jabberjay. He is described by Katniss as being good with words more times than it’s useful to recount. One of my favorite examples is when Katniss thinks, “Peeta doesn’t need a brush to paint images… He works just as well in words” (MJ 22) In fact, following his first interview with Caesar Flickerman, she adds, “I don’t care [that he is a traitor]. Not what he says or who he says it for, only that he is still capable of speech.” (MJ 27) He is the voice of reason in her world, the leader she envisions in a just society. Just as Peeta hears her call and is “a goner,” so too is Katniss for him. They are two songbirds impossibly, irrevocably attracted to each other.
Peeta isn’t just a songbird, though. He is, specifically, the jabberjay. He is tortured by the Capitol, turned into an “evil-mutt version” of himself, and is sent to destroy Katniss and, therefore, the rebellion (MJ 243). When he is rescued and brought to District 13, the Capitol’s scheme has apparently worked. He tries to kill her (let’s not talk about that), and his attraction to her is “gone” (her words, not mine). He uses the “L” word with Katniss for the first time- in past tense (ouch! it burns!!!). And he says to her, “You’re not very big, are you? Or particularly pretty?” (MJ 230) Let’s just say that hijacked!Peeta isn’t immediately a fan of the bird in front of him. But he’s a homing bird, and time after time, he finds his way back to her. In the beginning of Mockingjay, Katniss notes that “Peeta would have nothing to come home to anyway. Except me…” (9). And he does. Again and again, he finds his way back home to her.
If Katniss is the mockingbird and Peeta is the jabberjay, that makes their children the mockingjay. Katniss had been drawn to the mockingjay since she was a child, admitting that there was “something comforting about the little bird” (THG 43). Despite her insistence on not having children within a totalitarian regime, the mockingjay always served as a symbol of hope for her, even if she didn’t want to admit why. Katniss and Peeta’s children are that hope- and “only Peeta” could give her that. Peeta finally gets Katniss to buy into that future, to allow herself to feel the hope he has always represented to her. Falling in love and having children together is the way to show the world that they, as people, are more than just pieces in anyone’s Games.
So Mockingjay must end with the children, with a girl and a boy who possess traits of each of their parents and who are a new species of mutt that the Capitol never intended to exist. These children are the most important characters in the series. Katniss and Peeta’s children are the symbol of hope that we were promised, as readers, from the very beginning. They are the mockingjay. They don’t know that they dance on the ashes on the dead, and that’s okay. The fire and ashes are in the past, and the mockingjay is the symbol of a hopeful future, freewheeling in a sunshine-filled meadow. Suzanne gives us that token to carry with us, to take into whatever games we find ourselves forced to play.
(And a shout-out to everlarkedalways for inspiring me to write this)

EVERLARK MOMENTS #1: THE ROOFTOP PICNIC
Location description: I follow him to a flight of stairs that lead to the roof. There’s a small dome-shaped room with a door to the outside. As we step into the cool, windy evening air, I catch my breath at the view. The Capitol twinkles like a vast field of fireflies. <…> On the other side of the dome, they’ve built a garden with flower beds and potted trees. From the branches hang hundreds of wind chimes, which account for the tinkling I heard. Here in the garden, on this windy night, it’s enough to drown out two people who are trying not to be heard. / THG, ch.6
The moment: The roof. We order a bunch of food, grab some blankets, and head up to the roof for a picnic. A daylong picnic in the flower garden that tinkles with wind chimes. We eat. We lie in the sun. I snap off hanging vines and use my newfound knowledge from training to practice knots and weave nets. Peeta sketches me. We make up a game with the force field that surrounds the roof—one of us throws an apple into it and the other person has to catch it. No one bothers us. By late afternoon, I lie with my head on Peeta's lap, making a crown of flowers while he fiddles with my hair, claiming he's practicing his knots. After a while, his hands go still. “What?” I ask. “I wish I could freeze this moment, right here, right now, and live in it forever,” he says. Usually this sort of comment, the kind that hints of his undying love for me, makes me feel guilty and awful. But I feel so warm and relaxed and beyond worrying about a future I'll never have, I just let the word slip out. “Okay.” I can hear the smile in his voice. “Then you'll allow it?” “I'll allow it,” I say. His fingers go back to my hair and I doze off, but he rouses me to see the sunset. It's a spectacular yellow and orange blaze behind the skyline of the Capitol. “I didn't think you'd want to miss it,” he says. “Thanks,” I say. Because I can count on my fingers the number of sunsets I have left, and I don't want to miss any of them. / CF, ch.17

I could spend my life in this sweet surrender I could stay lost in this moment forever Where every moment spent with you is a moment I treasure*
I just want to hold you close Feel your heart so close to mine And just stay here in this moment For all the rest of time*
*Aerosmith - I Don't Want to Miss a Thing is official anthem of the rooftop scene, come on. It’s just PERFECT. I consider this song as a soundtrack for this moment. Right?!
P.S. Once again, what do you know about dream job? This illustration is a commission!! I mean, a person (wonderful, amazing person!) payed me for drawing this! For drawing one of the most beautiful moments from my favorite book! Dear @thehellcaster thank you again. I wanted to draw this moment for ages but considering level of detail I just couldn’t afford to spend so much time on one illustration (it would take me like a month to complete I think, since I don’t really have time for personal projects now). So it is a real luck to have an opportunity to draw this moment properly as a part of my work. Thank you! And hope you like the results ☺️.

You Jump, I Jump: Jack/Rose Analysis
There are many beautiful lines when it comes to describing Jack and Rose’s relationship, most notably, “I’ll never let go,” or old Rose’s speech near the end, “He saved me in every way a person can be saved.” Why, then, is my tag for them “otp: you jump I jump”? (Nobody really asked, but I’m going to tell you anyway.) Because it’s the perfect description of both facets of their relationship, before and after Jack’s death, and how they relate to one another.

Shout out to Cress Darnel for being a hopeless romantic but also being awesome and brave
Rip indeed 👏
Personally (and I know it’s the Jancy girlie in me) but I think single Nancy is such a fucking broke take. Like Nancy wants to be in a relationship and specifically she wants to be in a relationship with Jonathan. Nothing in the story so far has indicated she has to choose career over relationship. I mean she calls college/ the future OUR PLANS. I don’t know I just think that we’ve moved past this girlboss must be single to perform highest version of feminism. Nancy can have a career and a boyfriend. And honestly? Having Nancy be alone and focusing on her career is just as emotionally dead as her parents marriage that she’s been trying so hard to avoid. She can choose to want/have both of the options. They can be equally important parts of her life. Having both doesn’t make her any less of an independent woman or anymore of a housewife.
TLDR: Nancy deserves to shoot a gun and kiss her boyfriend and I’m tired of people saying she can’t
THANK YOU!!!!
mike’s hatred and general abrasiveness towards authority figures from the beginning is something that can be so personal and dear to the heart of a girl like me
Honestly, the one thing I learned from reading the Hunger Games is that you should find someone who will bring you peace and the promise that even in the face of all destruction that the flowers can still bloom. Because at the end of the day you don’t need the person who brings fire and vengeance, no, you need the person who brings you bread and the promise of a new day.
