My parents are both named Terry (spelled differently) but I’m pretty sure that’s one of the reasons my mom never changed her last name.

People would call and ask for Terry and child me would be like “boy or girl?” And they’d panic and hang up. My mom found this endlessly amusing.

When I (cishet female) lived in England in the 1980s, I encountered a lot of surprise because my given name is more often a nickname for boys than a name or nickname for girls. I was also asked a lot if I was redheaded when I was small.

In the US these days, my given name is more commonly a dog’s name than a girl’s name.

I would date a British man with my name but not a dog.

True story: I learned "inclement" in the fixed phrase "inclement weather" in weather forecasts. Because it's a forecast, and because "weather" is often used as a synecdoche for "bad weather", and "inclement weather" always means that "bad weather is coming", I inferred that "inclement" meant approximately the same thing as "impending" or "forthcoming'.

This, it turns out, is incorrect. It means "not clement", which was not helpful until I learned that "clement" existed, and what it meant, much, much later.

Also, fuck English very much for having both "in-" for "not" and "in-" for "into, within, tendency", so that you can't know in advance whether "inX" means "especially X" or "not X". Looking directly at you, "inflammable".

Which is to say that you can usually infer meaning from context, but it's still good to check the dictionary from time to time.
