Time Post-Critique Response

When it comes to the Time Project, I think I did alright. Someone brought up that maybe I could have had the balloon more towards the middle, and with that, maybe they are right and people could have seen more of what is going on. I agree that it maybe would have made this video a little bit better. I also agree with the fact that it could have maybe been a little bit more slower so people can see more of the water falling towards the ground. The slow motion video I made  was kind of a last minute idea that I had made before the critique. I wanted to add more of an effect to the project. That is why I added the water after I started using the kitchen knife in this process. Before I had the knife, I was just using a pen. These additional items added more emotion and interest, I believe. I like that people thought it was interesting and made them want to watch it over and over again. I originally wanted to do a collection of still images, but I felt that it wasn’t working and the photos kept getting blurry. Other than what was suggested during the critique, I am happy with the end result of this project. Other than the animation project in Foundations of Digital Media, I have never really made videos as art works before, so this was something new and different for me.

Time Artist Statement

Previously in the semester, I was stating that I would possibly use images, that are of my own, but I had decided to create a video instead for the Time project. I believe that when it comes down to my sentiments,  ideas, and work throughout our time virtually in this class, I have come a very long way, within the past few months, with this artwork since the beginning of the semester. In the beginning, I considered about doing just a single frame in time. After this attempt, I had been considering what I should do next and  executed a series of images  instead. Although, when I was attempting to complete it that way with my ideas, more or less of the pictures were blurry. I likewise attempted to use a kitchen knife instead of a pen to add more of a scary effect for the second try for this in the project. However, there was something missing. Later on, I decided to prepare a slow motion video as an alternative. In addition, I also put water in the balloon before I popped it. Don’t worry, I had something underneath the balloon to catch the water. I took in these alterations to create a more tense or exciting feeling. It took me multiple video takes to make sure I had a good one to use. The video is slowed down so people can see the balloon being popped and the water slowly falling towards the ground. More matters are very much noticed when you look at things in slow motion. When it is at regular speed or sped up more than normal, you might overlook some things and do not realize everything that is happening. 

When it arrives to the ideas and meaning behind this project, it is kind of personal, in a way. I do usually get nervous  and have anxiety when I am around balloons popping, like many other people. However, I become nervous more often when it just has air in it, but I may also become nervous just about water balloons breaking as well. In fact, creating this project made me kind of uneasy. Some people are even just afraid of being around balloons in general. In addition, some people may possibly tense up or cry, mostly when it comes to children, when they see a balloon pop or burst. This is called “globophobia.” 

This relates to time because it shows how much can happen within seconds, even if we do not acknowledge what is going on. To add, it demonstrates how quickly things could become wrong or change within that short period of time. One minute everything can go right and everything is going great, and then the next minute, it is the complete opposite.

Place post-crit Response

I believe I did okay on the Place Project. Although, now that I think about it, I think I could have made it a little bit more chaotic by spreading out the pieces of each image more than I did. Someone also mentioned maybe using more physical materials for this project. I think that could have helped, but at the same time, I am unsure about that. For some projects, using physical materials may help, but not for all of them. I actually prefer using digital materials and Adobe apps, especially since my concentration is in graphic design. I have tried using physical materials on other projects, but it didn’t really work as well as doing things digitally. Some people were unsure about how this relates to the place theme. This relates to the theme because it shows the shape of the United States map and mostly things that specifically happened this year within our country. Other countries were going through a pandemic as well, but from what I can tell, it is more crazy in the US than anywhere else, especially with all of this other stuff going on.  The background, which is a television screen that shows that there is no signal, definitely adds some sort of effect. It would have you thinking, “what is going on?”  However, some people at least may tend to focus on that more than the images in front of it. We constantly see these things on television, in the media,  and out in society, and it is very hard to escape it. It is hard to watch TV or go on social media without hearing about these things. Many people have different opinions on these subjects, so it is very hard for people to get along these days.  The part about having chaos in this project was meant to represent this and how everyone is so divided these days. I was trying to step away from just having literal depictions of these things or having something that looks like what we might see in a news article. I have also been told that with the way I did this, it looks like if, for example, someone took a mirror and they dropped and smashed it. This was kind of the effect that I was thinking about when I was fixing what I needed to.

Place Project Artist Statement

I would like to name my Place Project, “The Divided States of America.” This shows how divided people have been in the United States, especially with politics this year. First, I am going to talk about the ideas behind this. 

The year, 2020, has been really crazy. People have been really divided over opinions and politics. The red and blue colors on the map represent the electoral college during the election. In this year’s election, Donald Trump, who wanted to run for a second term, was running against a former Vice President, Joe Biden. We are still experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic at this very moment. More people have probably used more hand sanitizer and masks this year than before. Before this year, there hasn’t been a worldwide pandemic and virus like this in more than 100 years. People used these materials so they could protect themsel, as well as other people from the virus. However, some people don’t like it and tend to refuse to even wear a mask. These types of people are commonly well known as “Karens,” which are usually Trump supporters. They also protested at multiple state capitals because they wanted businesses to open back up right away. These outspoken people also do not support the Black Lives Matter. The BLM fist is represented in purple in this image. The movement is about spreading the awareness of the racial unfairness that has been going on in our country. There more movements and protests started this year, especially after the death of people like Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd. 

First, I took images and re-created them. I used the same method as I did for the Identity Project. I used triangles and the color picker tool in Illustrator This method was used with every image, except for the background. After that was done, I took of the triangles from each image and spread them out so it looks like shattered glass. The background image is a picture I took of my television screen when there is no signal or connection. I would like to add that no devices were ruined in the making of this project. This symbolizes how insane and chaotic it has been in 2020.

Weekly Time Post # 9

This week, I will plan on re-doing the photos and making sure that none of them are blurry. I will also use a knife to create more of a tense effect.

Place Project Proposal

For the place project, my goal is to show how chaotic 2020 was. To represent COVID-19, I will be having images of things like a mask and hand sanitizer. Another big thing that was going on this year was the election. This was most likely the most prime election in our country in history. I will have images of Donald Trump and Joe Biden in my project. There will also be items and logos that represent different celebrities that have died this year. To add, the Black Lives Matter will be represented in this since it was a really big thing this year. I will find a way to have cracks in the map or have pieces of the map breaking about to signify that this year has been crazy. 

When it comes to how I will create this artwork, I will be somewhat using the same technique I used for the Identity project. I may use real images from the internet, but they won’t be in the final artwork. I will use the color picker tool and triangles. This may take longer to do with this piece of art. After I finish doing this, I will figure out how to break apart the picture.

Time Weekly # 8

I did a little bit of more research. When someone has globophobia, which is being afariad of balloons, they can be easily triggered by the sound of balloons popping. To add, they would refuse to even go near a balloon.

“ Cafe Terrace at Night, by Vincent van Gogh “ - history.com 

Stephine Waldek has said, “ Vincent van Gogh is one of the most popular and prolific artists of all time, though he never found fame (or money) during his short life. One of his more famous paintings, completed in his signature Post-Impressionist style, is the 1888 work Café Terrace at Night, which depicts a brightly lit café against the starry sky. Visitors can still dine on this terrace, now part of a van Gogh-themed restaurant called, fittingly, Le Café la Nuit.” 

This looks like what you would see during a romantic scene in a movie. This gives a feeling of joy, happiness, and love. To add, this was painted in Arles, France, which is the same country that Paris is in, which is known as the city of love.

As said by the Artist Network Staff, “William Merritt Chase (1849-1916), is the big daddy of American Impressionism. He spent his formative years in St. Louis, Munich, and New York City, and he was truly a big-city sophisticate of the late 1800s. Imagine what it would be like to be an artist spending all of your days cooped up in congested, cosmopolitan environments. Now imagine what it was like for Chase to escape from it all by going to, say, Central Park or Prospect Park or even as far as the seaside on Long Island, which happened to be his three favorite plein-air painting locations. Finally, a place to breathe! And this feeling–this expansive, wide-open feeling–is the sense of these places that he was able to capture on canvas.” 

Chase was spent most of his time inside his own house, just like most of the people in world did this year. I personally like to leave the house everyday as well. Being outside and out of the house gives a sense of freedom.

According to the Artist Networks Staff, “ Maynard Dixon (1875-1946) achieved the same quality in his paintings, albeit in a very different place and using other means. Dixon was born in California and lived in the Southwest in the days when much of that desert region was undeveloped, mainly because it was harsh terrain, unfriendly to human habitation. And you feel all that in his work. His vivid color palette and high value contrast convey the unrelenting heat and glaring light of the desert, while his spare style and massive shapes show you the fierce majesty of his locations, all working together to present a powerful reminder of the helplessness of one man alone in nature.” 

Dixon uses colors to show every detail. He shows how how great and breathe taking it is to be in an area like this.

The last idea is about being and staying at home. I would start with cubes and other shapes that would come together to look like a house. Then, I will have words that describe a home and what being at home may be like. I also may or may add words outside of the house that describe what it is like to leave the house and be out in society. Especially with the pandemic, more people are afraid to leave their house now.

The second idea is a lot like the first one. Although, I might hand draw the shape of Michigan, and everything else will be done digitally. There will be things that symbolize Michigan and the things that come from the state. Two of the things that Michigan is mostly known for is the Ford cars and Faygo. I would add more things than what is shown in my sketch

This first idea is based on what has happened, specifically in the United States,  in 2020. This will be done using the shell, triangle method I used for the Identity project, for the entire picture. The red and blue colors in the background represent the electoral college from the presidential election. In front of that, I will have images of Donald Trump, Joe Biden, the CoronaVirus, a mask, hand sanitizer, something that represents the Black Lives Matter movement, and things that represent celebrities that have passed away this year. This would show how much has been going on this year, just in the United States.

Time Weekly Post # 7

I did a little bit of more research when it comes to popping balloons, like with what you see happening in my project. Some people are afraid of being around balloons in general, even when they are not being popped. This is called “Globophobia.”

Identity Post-Crit. Response

During the critique, I realized that I probably did better on this project than I did on the Language Project. I noticed some classmates talked about a possible connection between a mother and her daughter. Someone also mentioned that what could be happening is that the triangle pieces are falling off the daughter, while the pieces on the mother are coming. I can see how this idea would work, and maybe the mother is helping the daughter feel better. This was meant to be someone looking at their own reflection. To add, this represents how people hide their emotions. I don’t exactly remember if someone had said something about improving this project, but I think this was done better than the last one was. The way that the final version of this project was made is part of the Graphic Design process and ideas. I would do more projects with this kind of technique because it is actually what I am majoring in and I like it looks nicer when I create my artwork this way.
