is this a DCC reference
I'm tagging this DCC because I doubt many people follow the Matt Dinniman tag. Reddit user u/RatGodFatherDeath did some incredible detective work to track down Matt's first published story, and it is an absolute must read. Below is the text of the post
In his Audible interview last year, Matt said: "The first story I ever published was in a national magazine in 1999" — he was just a kid, and his first book wouldn't come out until 2003. But he's never named the magazine or the story, and as far as I can tell, no interview, profile, or wiki ever has. The earliest credit anyone cites is The Shivered Sky (2003).
I'm a book collector and a DCC fan, and that gap bugged me. So I went looking.
The hunt:
Wayback Machine snapshots of Matt's old website (captured April 2003) had a "samples of Matt's fiction" section listing three early story credits: "The Virgin" — first published in Genre Magazine; "The Champion" — winner of the 2000 Spam Writers Contest; and "The Beggar and the Devil" — 2nd place in The Harrow's 2003 short story contest. "The Virgin" is the only one he flagged as first published, and at 1999 it predates the other two — so that was the thread to pull.
Genre was a national gay men's lifestyle magazine (1991–2009). There's no digital archive and no index, so I couldn't just look up which issue. What I could do: sellers listing old back issues upload photos of the table of contents. I worked through those TOC scans — on eBay and elsewhere — until I found the one that listed him. The confirming scan turned up on an Amazon listing for a copy someone had sold: the May 1999 issue, with "The Virgin" in the contents, billed as "an original short story by Genre discovery Matt Dinniman."
Then came the hard part: actually getting a physical copy of a 27-year-old magazine that almost never surfaces for sale. I searched eBay and other sites, then reached out to a seller who had other Genre issues in stock. He tracked down a copy of the May 1999 issue for me through a specialty back-issue magazine dealer (NSFW site)— and it arrived this week.

Me every time i think about the 9th DCC book...
Does a horror podcast/audio drama with women as the main characters exist or is this a male dominated field
There are so many female-lead horror podcasts! And they’re so good!!
Primordial Deep is technically a science fiction/thriller but it is scary. A marine biologist is tasked with researching prehistoric monsters that are rising from the deep. If deep water and the vast things that could be living there freak you out, this is for you.
You Are the Ghost in This House is a little slow-paced, but it’s got very gothic, descriptive, Shirley Jackson vibes. Two women move back in to the rotting Manor House where they grew up. Obviously, the house is haunted.
The Silt Verses follows two worshippers travelling along a great black river, on a pilgrimage for an outlawed god. Just brilliant.
The Holmwood Foundation is slightly more fun and Scooby-Doo feeling, but still very dangerous. Also, it’s got two leads, and only one is a woman. In this modern-day sequel to Dracula, two staff members of a vampire research foundation go on the run across the Yorkshire moors after their workplace (and everyone in it) is destroyed. They don’t have their phones, they’re possessed by the ghosts of Mina and Jonathan, and they’re carrying Dracula’s disembodied head.
Mockery Manor is a mystery, but it’s fun and murderous and spooky. The villain is MESSED UP. The two protagonists are twin sisters, spending their summer working at a weird UK theme park.
Mabel is a fairy-tale classic with terrifying sound effects. A live-in carer tries to get in touch with Mabel, her patient’s granddaughter. Mabel isn’t picking up her calls…
Hi Nay follows Filipina immigrant Mari Datuin as she stops dangerous supernatural events in Toronto. This podcast has frightening entities, long-term arcs and a great ensemble cast.
Alice Isn’t Dead is a great horror about a truck driver searching for her wife across America. Made by Night Vale Presents, it’s got an amazing story and loads of strange, unexpected events.
Dungeon Crawler Carl Book 8 spoiler.
Carl sings take on me by A-ha.
10/10 book.
sending my aromantic beam at carl dungeon crawler
Collecting aroace sci-fi characters like Pokémon
Every time I read the "All Eyes On Me" performance I cry.
The Dungeon Crawler Carl series is an unexpected love letter to humanity’s kindness and perseverance. It makes me remember why I love humanity, even as I try not to lose hope for our Earth.
Spoilers for dcc book 6 The Eye of the Bedlam Bride
So I am currently on a relistening of the audiobooks and I just reached that part where Carl faces his dad and learns about his brother and stepmom.
It broke me all over again and I forgot just how much that hurt. How much it hurts for Carl to know he had a brother and never knew about him and now he will never get to know him.
Carl would've been a great big brother if they had ever met, I just know that. He would've been everything for Asher that he could've been and would've done anything for that boy. Especially knowing that Carl never got to have that and now has the chance to show this child, who had to suffer under the same man as he did once, some much needed love and cherish and spoil him. And they would've gone on hikes and Carl would've introduced him to Princess Donut and maybe they would've gone on bike rides together, learning as they go.
I don't know, I really really just want Carl to be happy and know his brother and get to experience some fun (and sometimes just absolutely childish) stuff, that he never got to do as a kid.
DCC books can really have me laugh crying to cry crying over the course of a few pages
My friend was talking about casting for DCC and brought up Mark and Jensen Ackles for Carl, then asked me who I would find acceptable. I don't have a specific person in mind, my only hope is that they don't make him a twink...
Now that the live action Dungeon Crawler Carl tv series has been announced, is it time for me to say I really don't want this series to be live action when animation IS RIGHT THERE AS THE OBVIOUS CHOICE FOR A TV SERIES
I have an idea for an AU for no dungeon DCC:
Carl does in fact take Donut when he leaves and he starts using social media to pay for her. We still get the Princess Posse! They would do numbers on social media. Ex-military man who has a cat that sits on his shoulder, not to mention his voice, if he could gain a little traction he could make bank to pay for Donut.
He absolutely should do a follow me on “Donut’s Journey into the Dungeon” aka the outside on a leash. We could definitely translate some of the mobs into irl stuff. Like the Goblins are children. Rats are squirrels and the like she tries to chase.
Eventually Carl makes enough to quit his current job and take Donut hiking for content.
We still can have Donut and Carl meeting their friends. Maybe the Meadow Lark crew is outside and see Carl walking Donut and they get know each other from there. Carl gets new friends and Donut has some many more people to pet her!
On a trip into the dungeon, Donut bolts off and finds baby Mongo, a bird of prey chick that has fallen out of the nest and broken a wing. She decides this her baby now. She’s very displeased when the rehab people Carl calls take Mongo away.
Katia gets met via online (look the cats silly adventures make her feel better through this awful time in her life) and eventually in person on a trip where Carl films Donut hiking in other countries.
Baptista send a fan mail package that has silver vine and catnip teas for Car and Donut with every clear instructions on how to prepare them. Carl says this the only tea he has ever liked.
Mordecai is a veteran living in the same building as Carl. He and his brother went into the military to pay for college. He gets to study fungi. He kinda adopts Carl as a little sibling/cousin. He occasionally will go on the hiking with them and he will point out what mushrooms are and are not safe for human and animal consumption.
Odette is still a talk show host. And she has them on the show a couple of times. She gives solid advice about how to deal with the fame and money.
Beatrice is furious that Carl is being a successful pet influencer. And when all of her atrocities come to light, oh that does not look good for her.
AI is being creepy in the comments about Carl’s bare feet of course.
I am in love with this AU and had a few thoughts for other characters!
Zev could be like a social media rep who gives Carl advice and they get closer and become kind of friends because Donut loves Zev so much.
Quasar is still a lawyer that gets involved because Bea and her oarents are threatening Carl with a lawyer and legal shit because he took Donut and thus Carl consults Quasar for tips and to deal with that.
Also The Maestro could be some form of Youtuber who has a huge following and he invites Carl and Donut for an interview. Carl rips him a new one with how he treats his guests and the shitty things he spews on his show.
Also maybe Carl kind of Katia and Bautista with each other because he shows Katia how to make that amazing tea and she loves it so much, she contacts Bautista herself so she can ask for more reccomendations.
God I love this no dungeon au, they still have to deal with Drama but they are alive and happy and not in constant danger of death
happy pebble pride
