freddi recognized the annoyed voice, she popped her head from behind the abnormally large present she was carrying with ease “happy birthday annie!” she cheered placing the box on the floor to give the brunette a hug but thought better of it. “where can I take this so it doesn’t get damaged” this being a chunky blanket she had knit, in her defense she thought of the idea during winter and didn’t think the current level of heat was a possibility. the throw was accompanied by a dozen different snacks and a bottle of red wine with a hand made popup card. to say freddi liked gift giving was a slight understatement.
Her eyes widened when she realized the size of the gift and from who it was. "Thank you!" She moved in for a hug, her eyes still stuck on the gift, until she realized that perhaps that wasn't the best moment for one. "Uh, let's just hide that in my room. But also, what the hell is that, that's huge!" She guided them, even though it was a path Freddi knew well. "That's like, human sized. Freddi, did you bring me a stripper. Be honest. I won't exactly mind it."

it took the blonde a moment to realise the yelling was directed at her. clearly ann was ENJOYING herself - fair enough, really. it was her party, after all, and it was sort of nice seeing someone HAPPY. ‘ it’s okay. i’m not sure anyone knows what you meant, ‘ haven said, smiling softly. it was hard NOT to smile, really, when she was around people in such good m o o d s. even if they were altered by ALCOHOL. ‘ i mean…my friend was coming, too, so it seemed like a good idea? ‘
Ann nodded at her explanation, a smile still lingering on her lips. "WELL, everyone seems to have thought it was a good idea." She gestured towards the slightly crowded kitchen, nudging the man that walked past her. "I'm not sure they all even know this is my birthday party. Hey, Josh," she was met with a confused and drunken stare and some attempts to clarify that that was not his name, "sure, whatever, did you bring me a birthday gift, Josh? That's what I thought." And with that, she turned her attentions back to Haven. "Oh, you know what we should do? We should go outside. Get away from the noise. I'm tired of shouting. C'mon, chair girl - shit. C'mon, pretty girl. Get drunker with me."
pick your battles. pick… pick fewer battles than that. put some battles back. that’s too many
@havenyoung
"Chair girl!" Ann practically shouted from across the kitchen when she got a glimpse of Haven, it being evident in her tone and facial expression that the drink she held in her hand was far from the first one. "Oh, shh, it's a secret. I know. I thought you wouldn't come!"

April stepped out of the shadows, not having meant to cause the other girl a fright, in fact she’d been trying to disappear into them. (“Sorry, I didn’t mean to… uh - I’m not going to hurt you.”)
Just like that, Ann's defensiveness disappeared. Just some girl by herself in the dark. "Good, because I don't have a knife." She said with a smile. "You shouldn't be out here by yourself in the dark, though. Promise you're not a serial killer and I'll let you in. I've got generators, food and booze."

“ You think you have charm ? ” It was a playful jab, an instant reaction to her comment. By this point, Nixon didn’t even think about what he was going to say to her. Their back and forth happened so often, it was like second-nature. Nothing said was ever truly intended to harm. “ You might actually have a point there, but i’m not sure if that’s somethin’ you should go ‘round braggin’ about. You’ll make yourself sound like you belong on a twelve-step programme. ” Led over to the drink table, he placed the crate down on the floor, before doing what he did on a daily basis. Cups were gathered and stacked in a more accessible way, empty bottles pushed to the back as he reached down and placed his fresh ones up front. “ And you’re cool with them all bein’ here ? ” He questioned, brow raised as he felt a slight pang of concern. He worked in a bar, which meant he knew better than most how ugly big crowds could become. “ I wouldn’t want a bunch of strangers in my apartment, birthday or not. ” A drink was handed to her — her favourite, of course — before he began to pour one for himself.
"You make yourself sound like you think I do. Anything you want to say to my face?" Her brows raised, but the playful smirk was still there - it rarely left during their conversations. "You are an enabler then. Now go live with that on your conscience." Ann took a step back, admiring how quickly he entered in bartender mode. Not that she had expected it; her reasons to invite him were far from wanting a free bartender at the party. She looked around after his question. Was she cool with that? "I think I'm making my peace with it." Everything was a mess, and Ann knew that even her commanding personality wouldn't work to restore enough order. There weren't many options left. "Kenna is so kicking me out after this, though." The name drop needed no explanation, Ann had told him all about her roommate during her drunk rants - including all of the times Ann knew she'd been stealing her cereal. Just like that, the playful smile was back. It grew into a grin at the sight of the drink, which she gladly took a sip out of the moment it reached her hands. "I feel loved."

As much as she'd made her peace with the unexpected overcrowding in her house, the place was still far too loud to take a phone call. As such, she'd taken a break from it all on the street, the loud music and chatter still quite noticeable. However, just as she was about to return inside, something moved in the dark. "I have a knife." She did not.

He wasn’t much of a partier. While social with the customers that came into his work, Nixon typically kept himself to himself. It had always seemed better that way, easier to stay hidden from his past. The invitation from Ann had been unexpected. The two spent a lot of time together, sure, but that time was spent with him serving her drinks and attempting to calm her whenever she got into feisty, drunken states. There had never been a clear declaration of friendship made, but perhaps despite them both being disregarding of it, that type of bond lingered behind the rolling of eyes and playful jokes made across the bar. A low whistle left his mouth as he walked through the door, eyes focused on the scene before him as he held onto the crate of alcohol in hands. “ How are you this popular when you literally spend half of your time pestering me at dukes ? ”
"It's called charm," she joked without even looking at Nixon, her eyes still following the stranger who had ignored her question. Her ultimate pet peeve. "Also, bitch, please, if I stopped going there, you'd have to close your doors. I pretty much pay you your salary." Ann turned to him with an amused smile, which only grew wider at the sight of his birthday present. "I need to invite you to more things." Inviting Nixon wasn't in her original plans but, as was often the case, she got spontaneous after a few drinks. Had she regretted her decision, the ever so blunt Ann would have told him such the following day, a fact he definitely knew. She did not. "Thank you." With that, Ann started pulling him by the arm in the direction of the drinks table, now a complete mess, and shook her head at the groups of people that walked by. "I know maybe thirty percent of these people."

Rowan WALKED into the party, wearing a short silver dress imbued with white trimmings. Her hair was curled into SOFT waves and she wore a shade of dark VIOLET lipstick. Already tall, she wore a pair of heels that made her TOWER over nearly everyone there. She WASN’T technically invited, but she figured the BLACK betsey johnson purse she’d bought as a gift, would be enough to appease the birthday girl. She placed it on a STACK of presents and made her way to the drinks table. The blonde grabbed herself a WINE COOLER before she leant back observing the scene.
The party, which had started as something small and relatively quiet, had escalated right before her eyes. People, many she didn't even know, had flooded into her house and, honestly, about twenty minutes in she completely stopped caring. She would most certainly not keep on going around giving people strict orders they would ignore - damage control was never her strong suit. The most reasonable thing to do instead would be to drink and drink and drink, which she definitely did. Ann smiled at the familiar face near the drinks table as she poured herself a cup of... something. A pink beverage. That she would not ask questions about. "My roommate is so kicking me out when she's back. Don't suppose you know anyone with a spare room?"
Ann usually prides herself in her 'contacts', and they did not fail her that night. Once the power was out, she was making phone calls, and soon there were generators and new guests, and the house was loud and bright, a beacon in the dark night. However, as time passed more and more people began flocking to her place, and she was slowly losing control of it all. "Hey, man-bun, don't touch the tv. Sasha, get them away from the windows." The door was wide open, and strangers came and gone as she watched with her arms crossed over her chest. And yet another one walked by. "Who the fuck are you?"
havenyoung:
haven nodded slowly. ‘ maybe you should put your glasses on, just in case? ‘ she suggested, trying to smile and make light of it all. it was sort of funny, if she thought about it. if it was someone else… ‘ well, it would be nice if you didn’t hold it against me. ‘ if she kept smiling, it would be convincing, eventually. probably. at least she could tell the girl did seem genuinely amused by the situation - that was comforting, if nothing else. haven finally sat down, on her own seat this time. ‘ uh. haven young. i don’t really do the instagram thing, but it’s nice to meet you. mostly. ‘
"I promise I won't." That was too bad. Tried as she might, Ann couldn't stop thinking about how hilarious of a story that would be. Mostly with a 'this was how we first met' in the end. She shook her head slightly, turning to face Haven and trying to distract herself from her thoughts. When was the last time she'd spent that much time flirting with a pretty girl? Moe importantly, when was the last time they had so obviously not noticed her efforts? "That's tragic. It would be nice to keep on seeing your face." Too far? Ann was never one for subtlety, and the other woman quite obviously didn't need any. "Oh! I'm throwing a birthday party next Friday. Lots of booze and food. Only a few people. Maybe I could see your face there?"
vidaoliveira:
she could IMMEDIATELY see where this was going , and it was the exact reason vida never got into these conversations with ann . . but she was hitting the nail right on the head with her counter questions & vida might have been a BITTER BITCH , but she was a bitter bitch that knew when to give someone credit where it was due . ‘ exactly, idiots join sides because they think they’re safe from the shit that’s coming but little do they know that all they’re doing is becoming p a w n s in a much bigger and much more dangerous game . ’ she sighed, shaking her head at the endless stream of questions . ‘ ann . . i’m tired . ’ vida admitted side eyeing her friend . ‘ and i got stabbed tonight —- so unless you want to FEEL what that’s like . . enough with the spanish inquisition . ’
Ann poured all of her efforts into registering every word Vida said with a small triumphant smile on her lips - rarely would the other indulge her with so many answers. Her thoughts on the conflict using people as pawns was one she shared, it being one of the reasons why she refused to pick a side or develop her powers. It was a game with fatal endings. Ann propped her head back up at the sound of her name, and slowly put away the phone, her eyes searching and finding the wound she’d overlooked before. "Duly noted. Getting stabbed would really slow me down right now. I'll find someone less stabbed to surprise with the spanish inquisition." She got up with already three other potential targets in mind, but before taking one step, it felt like something was pulling her back. Their conversation felt unfinished. "Hey, Vida," she turned her head to the side, giving the other woman one more look, "make sure you get that checked. Uh, call me if you need me. Truly."
freddiisms:
“you don’t think i want this under control?“ freddi whispered shaking her two little fists. “i can’t exactly put out an add i the paper for super strong prometheans looking for teaching experience.” she swiped the check from it’s dispenser and sighed “even if i could who’s to say they don’t work differently.“ freddi walked to the table to deliver the check but just found a pile of singles soaking in the spilt water. she took the cash, wringing it out slightly and walked back to the counter giving ann her patented i’m fine look. “this diner needs me more than I need it, property damage and all.”
Ann could have interrupted her, but instead the faintest of smiles appeared on her sealed lips. She could barely hide how entertaining Freddi's stress talk was - in the most endearing way possible, of course. The waitress moved around, still relentlessly working, but Ann didn't move from her spot behind the counter, her eyes simply following her movements. "I have contacts," she finally started, "you know this. I can ask around. It's worth a shot. Shh, don't give me an opinion. I'm doing this." Ann informing others of a decision rather than asking was a standard conversation. " OR I could try and help you out, for the time being. You break some rocks, some car tires, I don't know, understand what's up with that, and we train. Well, you train, I put on some cool shades, get a seat and yell 'gentler' at you."
freddiisms:
ann’s friendly face sent a wave of relief through freddi, her anxieties dulled to a soft hum. “y-yeah, i should ask the manager for new ones” she sighed with a grateful smile. “I don’t want you to cut yourself” she warned offering to take the glass from her as she placed it in a make shift pouch by grabbing the edges of her apron. Freddi stood and addressed the peeved customer “I’m very very sorry again, I’ll get you some napkins and a new water” they just asked for the check which she quickly obliged to pulling ann with her behind the counter. “Oh my gosh that was so embarrassing” she cried working the cash registrar.
In most cases, Ann would end the other's concerns with one annoyed look. She knew what she was doing. She had no need for anyone's worry, always so defensive, always so unscattered. Her hand moved towards the pouch, leaving the big shard there. What could she say, Ann had a soft spot for her stressed out friend. Following Freddi's movements, she too got up, and was soon behind the counter as well, the annoyed look begging to come to the surface. "Shit happens. Look," she leaned with her elbows against the counter, giving their surroundings one quick cautious look, "knowing how to do stuff is an extra, if you chose it. But maybe it's time to start looking into controlling that a bit more. Just how to keep it from getting you fired." She sighed, finally turning her head to look at her friend. "You alright?"
