the problem with watching buffy the vampire slayer for the first time when you're 13 is that it will fundamentally reshape your brain chemistry to the point where literally all fiction becomes buffy the vampire slayer in different fonts. "watch another show!" you might say, and believe me i have! i promise i've watched many other shows since i was 13. but the problem is that all those other shows as well as films, books, podcasts etc. are simply deviations of buffy the vampire slayer to me. it's the holy text, the primary source. everything else is just commentary.
Either way, an Orpheus who didn't turn is an Orpheus who never loved Eurydice at all.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer 6.02 | "Bargaining: Part 2"
yes i love reading too much into james’s acting choices but why can you literally see spike calibrating his conception of right and wrong based on buffy’s reactions to him
xander harris has some of the most intense henchmen energy ever recorded. he looks like he should constantly be saying "on it boss" to somebody. there's even an episode about how much henchmen energy he has. for this reason alone, i love him.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer 5.04 | "Out of My Mind"
so much of giles's story is him finding a middle ground between rupert and ripper.
ripper is freedom. angry and young and pain and impervious in his careless disregard - and then it ends in death, it gets his friend killed. and suddenly ripper isn't dangerous in a way that keeps him safe, ripper is just dangerous. and so he claws desperately back to rupert, the kid he tried so hard to run from. and rupert really is safe, all tweed and old books and obeying the council, stuffy and still holding himself apart from the world.
until he gets buffy hurt, leaves her alone and powerless and betrayed. following the rules got her nothing. so what's left? if ripper isn't safe and rupert isn't safe, what is? who's left?
one of my favorite ways that spike chafes against the fundamental underpinnings of the show is how he is a creature of unapologetic impulse and sensation in an environment where everyone is seemingly pathologically terrified/ashamed of the body’s desires and functions. btvs largely a bloodless, goreless universe where the body is necessary in it’s Function but little else and Need is something it’s heroes overcome as the ultimate test of goodness. even the kills turn to dust and dissipate in front of our eyes with no cleanup necessary…. then there’s there’s spike whose face hollows out as he starves, whose skin smokes and catches fire as he moves about, who can’t stop reaching out to stroke and touch, who dreams (in exaltation) of being penetrated (to death lol), who leaves bruises like kisses and revels in scratches, who lived 100 years with someone who regarded torture as affection, who swallowed his own soul like a burning coal and tried to tear it out…. the signature buffy shame catching up to him only when he attains the thing that makes you human in the buffyverse…. anyways we love you viscera and tactile experiences and the danger of Feeling ❤️❤️❤️❤️
i dont like xander harris. i love him so much and i think hes absolutely hilarious. half the time hes on screen i want someone to kill him. if i was friends with him irl i would probably fall in love with him. i think hes a misogynistic piece of shit. hes flawed and so are all of the other characters in btvs so can i really hold it against him. i wanna put him in a snowglobe or mason jar terrarium and shake it as hard as possible and watch him go flying around. everything in the container settles and he stands up and brushes himself off and i clap and cheer and cry because i wanted him to be okay so badly. i shake it again.

"i'd rather be fighting you anyway" "mutual" isnt QUITE in the continuum of spuffy marriage moments but it is in the sense that it represents the ouroboros of their relationship that once they enter into knowing each other they are always already loving and losing each other forever the moment they meet in school hard fighting to the not-death they are already clasping hands in chosen full of love as he burns to ash for her. do u understand. anyway whats my line is like. spike's whole deal for his WHOLE LIFE is that he is obsessed with slayers he wants slayers all day every day meanwhile he finds out there are now TWO OF THEM. there's TWO. and he doesnt even ask any questions. this man is a slayerologist and he is presented with the impossible extstence of kendra and he's still like wait ok but i miss buffy where is she. i wanna fight her please. he does this same thing with faith in s7 like they are buds but he doesnt express any urge to like, mystically fight to the death with her or anything. like the teleology of spike's slayer obsession is then coded to actually just be about buffy the whole time. william the bloody gets obsessed with slayers in the 1880s bc buffy summers doesnt exist yet, but she one day will, so he has to get as close to her as possible. in a sense every slayer he kills gets him one step closer to buffy existing so she can kill him. DO YOU SEE. how i am losing my mind.
