Trying to go paperless is hard to do.  In fact, I haven't been able to do it.  But having a second monitor to view my endless documents has made it easier for me to cut down on printing.  I bought  a Plugable USB to VGA Adapter (from amazon.com) and was able to hook up a vertical montor in a few minutes.  I love having 2 screens

Unityfax was actually the solution to more then one problem.  I had been trying for several months to create a digital filing system for our company paperwork.  I also was working to have our different company locations stop faxing the daily paperwork and send their information via email.  They were unable to do so, and my solution was to sign up for the Unityfax service and now all my faxes arrive in my inbox already in PDF form.  I can now file these digital copies on my office computer and access them again quickly with a few clicks of the mouse.

Softi Scan to PDF software

This was actually the first app I re-installed after I upgraded my computer.  I use this quickly and easily to convert hard copies to  PDFs.  Once in PDF form I can email or store the documents digitally.   Digital storage makes them so much easier to retrieve later.

The second app I reinstalled after I upgraded my computer was Mail Attachment Downloader Pro by GearMage.  I use it to grab all my google e-mail attachments and download them automatically to a specific directory on my office computer.  I get so many invoices sent to me every day, and I use to download them one at a time.  Having it automated is a big time saver.  I actually first tried the free version, but just upgraded to the Pro version for the commercial license.

I just upgraded to a new computer at the office.  My last move was due to a catastrophic computer failure in the middle of the holidays, so in comparison, this is a far easier move from one computer to another.

At that time my computer failed, my backups were done manually and sporadically.  It was by chance and luck that I didn't lose too much data and was able to recover all my important files.  With Carbonite my backup is done automatically and regularly.   

Today, I am using Logmein.com to access my office computer and to transfer my Carbonite Backup subscription to my new computer.  The back up seems to be going so much faster then when I first signed up for this service. 

I also have used the mobile Carbonite service to look up backed up documents while not at the office.  I've notices several times, that my very recently backed up files were not available for viewing through Carbonite mobile app.  In those cases, I had to use other methods to see those files or wait until they were finally viewable.

The first app I ever used to log in remotely to my office was pcAnywhere via a modem.  Now I use logmein.com  :) 

Logmein.com has set me free from the office.  While the connection is easiest used on a desktop computer, I have used the iphone and ipad app to help me quickly access Quickbooks to answer emailed questions while watching my daughter's volleyball practice and to send requested reports through email while at the beach.

My remote sessions move slower then when I am actually sitting in front of my office computer, but this app give me the flexibility to finish up certain tasks at home (such as long file transfers, creating reports, and looking up requested information) so I can dedicate my time at the office to more pressing deadlines.
