Five Faces of Grief - Laura Lansrud-López
American Silence: The Photographs of Robert Adams
The photographs shown:
1. Clearcut. Clatsop County, Oregon 2000 (top right)
2. Eucalyptus Branch. Redlands, California 1983 (middle left)
3. Longmont, Colorado 1973-974 (middle right)
4. Garden of the Gods. El Paso County, Colorado 1976 (bottom left)
Adams’ exhibition was divided into three sections - The Gift, Our Response, and Tenancy. I will be discussing my interpretation of the exhibition.
I have to say this is by far one of my favorite photography exhibitions that I’ve ever experienced thus far. Soon as I walked into the exhibition I felt a sense of melancholy, but I think that was Adams' entire purpose…
I think the exhibition took us through a journey of the beauty and fragility of nature, the silence and stillness American scenery and nature instills in us, and our insufficient response to take care of this same space that provides us peace and quietness. The reason I chose these four photographs was because of the silence that I felt instantly when viewing them. They all are best depictions of stillness and silence in nature in different forms because here we see the silence that is instilled in us when we are one with nature, when the world is silent, when we are alone with ourselves, and when the earth is alone.
I think Adams was depicting silence that nature can instill in us, but trying to relay the message that this same nature or earth that nourishes us, society and people do a poor job of taking care of it or even appreciating it. So this is what he means by silence - the silence we’re blessed to receive and the silence that is our lack of response of providing the earth the same safe space it provides us.
is our love strong enough to stand the test of time?
i feel like there’s so many things i could say but idk where to begin. ig this is what it truly feels like to be broken. it’s like having all of this pain that aches everywhere, and having no idea of which direction it takes to heal it all. but that’s the thing too, you know some of the wounds are too deep to ever be completely healed so you seal it up enough to keep going bc what other choice is there?
idk what hurts most about someone hurting you… does things hurt more when you least expected it? does it hurt more bc of the person who did it? i think for me, it hurts more knowing never in a million years would i ever hurt the person the way they’ve hurt me. the thought of me knowing that puts my stomach into knots bc i don’t think people think or even care about that.

our experience always emerges through our senses and our bodies are not just visible objects but also sense-making, visual subjects.

i was really in a good mood because this was the third art exhibit i went to this day. this exhibit was the most influential and touching to me because the art was created by young incarcerated kids.
it was just very beautiful to see how influential art is and how it can be used as a sense of coping or healing. i felt that from a lot of these kids.
