A Fusion Splicer is used for the fusion of fibre optics with cables, typically optical cables. The term 'fusion splicing' is often used to describe the junction design of optical cables at the point where a fiber optic cable joins two conductors. The term 'fused' indicates that the fibre cables have been joined or sealed so that there is no further damage to the conductors within the cables and the junction box. Due to the nature of the construction of optical fibres, any splicing or fusion of fibre cables is normally at an outdoor interface where the risk of damage is most severe. The use of a Fusion Splicer means that at the junction where the two cables meet there is a sealed fusion splicing construction which completely cuts off any risk to the fibre cables themselves.

A Fusion Splicer is used in many manufacturing processes. One common process which fusion splices is called 'cold fusion splicing'. This type of fusion splicer works by positioning one fibre end of a cable onto the external side of a cold coil spring that is located at the correct height above the other one. Once the fibre has been placed upon the spring, the mechanical energy is used to push the spring towards the other end of the cable so that it aligns with the internal alignment.

Cold fusion splicing allows the separation of two gases. In this case the gas pressure would be approximately five to ten times that of the ambient pressure. The gas would be argon and the air would be neon. A small hole is firstly created in the external fibre end of the cable so that some of the gas escapes through the top of the insulation. Once the hole has been formed, the inside of the insulation is then aligned with the internal alignment. A second hole is then created over the top of the insulation to allow the argon gas to escape through this hole.

A third method for the fusion splicing of fibers is called 'high-speed fibre splicing'. In this method, a high-speed electric motor is used to rotate the copper ribbon. Once the motor is spinning at a high-speed, a sharp shockwave is sent through the fibre cables, which causes them to separate from one another. The electricity provided by the motor will split the argon and neon molecules into two different atoms, which have now become separated from each other.

These three methods all use an argon/neitherium fusion splicer, which is very similar to the fibre-optic separator described above. Once the two different halves of the atoms have been created, the mechanical properties of the solid wire are manipulated using a mechanical actuator. This actuator is used to alter the mechanical properties of the solid wire by creating an impulse that allows it to push the argon molecules out of the gap. Once the argon and neon gases are pushed out of the gap, the mechanical properties of the wire to become elastic and it will regain its original shape.

This method of fusion splicing is preferred by most manufacturers because it produces a very consistent cleave, even after several passes with the fusion splicer. If the mechanical properties of the wire are changed during the cleave, the end product may not be as precise as desired. It is also important to note that the method of fusion splicing must be performed outside of any working area, as particles from the air can interfere with the process. Therefore, it is recommended that the entire fabrication process is performed in an atmosphere without particles. If this is not possible, then it is recommended that a high precision cleaver is used instead of a standard splicer. The high precision cleaver will help ensure that the cleave is performed at an acceptable level of friction.

The feature set of this single optical fibre transceiver includes support for up to four independent ten Duplex fibre elements, support for up to four independent Ten Duplex fibre cores and up to four independent SFP sleeves.

Using a 100% glass fibre solution, the iSee transceivers enable easy installation and cost reduction.
