Kyniska’s Dedication at Olympia
Nossis 4
Coming to the the temple, let us see the wooden image of Aphrodite, how cunningly wrought it is with gold. Polyarchis dedicated it, reaping the benefit of much property from the beauty of her body.

Dedication to Hera of a robe woven by Nossis and her mother Theuphilis.
Honored Hera, you who coming from heaven often look upon the Lacinian* shrine smelling of incense, Receive this garment made of linen which Theuphilis, daughter of Kleokha, wove with her illustrious child Nossis.

The Brettians threw their shields from their shoulders, doomed to a sad end, slain at the hands of the Locrians* who are quick to fight, the shields, celebrating their (i.e. Locrians) arete, lie under the shrines of the gods, and they do not long after the forearms of the cowardly men who left them behind.

In an effort to get acquainted with more Hellenistic epigram writers, I’ll be starting a series of translations of Nossis and then Anyte. The numbering and text are according to Gow and Page’s Hellenistic Epigram. Translations are my own and will be more conveying the meaning of the Greek rather than any artistry.
I’ll begin with Nossis, a hellenistic poetess from early 3rd century BCE.
Nothing is sweeter than love, all other delights are secondary; I have spit out even honey from my mouth. Nossis says this: whomever Cypris has not loved, †she† does not know what sort of flowers roses are.

This is so infuriating? Like do you really think war and smart phones cant exist in the same country at the same time without cancellation? Those phones (not even “expensive smartphones”) are probably all the connection they have with family. And that a phone = rich, and that their having a phone erases their status as refugees?
I got a smartphone brand new for $20, it’s not great and pretty far behind compared to the new phones but it was cheap. My friend in Columbia was able to buy a similar one for about $12. And also there is the fact that you can actually be middle class or even rich and end up as a refugee! Let’s say your town floods and you can only grab what you can fit in a single backpack of course you are going to take your damn phone! ESPECIALLY when your entire family is split up cause the evacuation happened out of nowhere and you want to be able to find them again.
Racist white people seem to think cell phones cost $5 million dollars and nobody but tech billionaires and other whites should own them.
bigcutiekellyI’m pretty sure it’s not just white people….jesus fucking christ.
Phones aren’t what you’re buying during war. They cost money. Service costs money. You can’t play victim and then have unnecessary expenses. AND ONE LAST THING poverty means YOU DONT HAVE MONEY FOR LUXURIES
The ability to communicate is a fucking luxury? Do you hear yourself right now? Did you ignore all of those posts above this that mentioned that smartphones (and phones in general) are not luxury items? And that they are deliberately priced NOT to be as such?
Sorry what actual poor/impoverished people don’t fit your fucked up narrative of what you THINK actual poor and impoverished people look like.
We have a nice ol’ fashioned mailing system. Payphones. Stores often let you use phones if you ask too. They ARE luxury items. I’m poor. I’ve been poorer. We couldn’t afford phones. Or heat. Or electricity. Or water. Phones are a luxury, friend.
Yeah I'm sure the mailing system in Syria right now is top fucking notch.

It's Colombia. Columbia is a university or an outdated American concept.
Why is it when I see a white girl with a tattoo on her thigh i think sexy? But a Latina I think ghettos as fuck?
because youre racist
Simple! Because you have a preference for white girls in that situation.
You’re such a smart and intelligent person. I’m so glad there are enlightened individuals like you out there who actually think that such “preferences” aren’t based entirely on racist foundations.
No really, the tendency for white people to characterize minorities as “ghetto” is not racist. You’re entirely right, it’s just a preference to do so.
Dumbass.
On Gildersleeve
"Those nations that keep their blood pure, that refuse to blend with an inferior stock, are those that are destined to the mastery; and 'Latin' America owes most of its misery to the degradation of race."
-Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve (yes, the same one from Gildersleeve's Latin Grammar and Syntax of Classical Greek) in "Maximilian; His Travels and His Tragedy", from his book Essays and Studies: Educational and Literary published in 1890 (p.487).
Glad I've never used any of his syntax or grammar books.

Idris Elba
Tell me again how your objection to Idris Elba playing James Bond is rooted in his identity as an Englishman.

Euripides' Bacchae
Anyone have the Bryn Mawr commentary on the Bacchae? The reviews on Amazon state that it only comes with a commentary but no Greek text but surely not? That would seem like a very silly decision by Bryn Mawr who in my experience (albeit limited) usually do have a book accompanying the commentary with the Greek text.

Hellenistic Crete
Does anyone know of any scholarly work that deals with Crete during the Hellenistic period?
Most of the stuff I find deals exhaustively on Mycenaean and Minoan Crete and then there's a rather large 1000 year gap until it's time to talk about Roman Crete. I'm primarily interested in the "Greekness" (problematic term, I know) of Cretans during the Hellenistic period, anything on what dialect they spoke and what interactions they had with the Hellenistic kingdoms would be the kind of information I seek. Any help or pointing in a general direction would be greatly appreciated.
Two-handed sword that belonged to the Bavarian Prince-Elector Maximilian II, 1689
What the hell?
A very impressive gigantic sword!
Now that’s something.
was his highness a rpg protagonist
This is fucking awesome. It looks like a macuahuitl, which were the sword-equivalents used by native latin americans. Not a whole lot of metalworking going on in most of those regions at the time, but goddamn if wood and volcanic glass/sharpened stone didn’t get the fucking job done. You take something akin to a thick spear or a bat, carve grooves into the sides, slot obsidian or flint into the grooves, and voila. Congratulations on your motherfucking sword.
"native latin americans"? That's not a term that actually exists nor do I see a reason why it should exist. The people portrayed here are the Mexicas.
