          he hated the word stalker like he hated small talk or the color orange, and it made him itchier knowing they saw a monster instead of a necessary shadow, bloodhound loyalty with teeth, hungry to chew up the harm before it made it close to them. 'stalking' was also an ugly act, a direct label for a type of threat, or worse: an amateur. it failed to account for subtlety, and blake considered every step he'd taken so far to be the least aggressive way a human male had ever existed in another person's orbit. he did not trample leaves; he vanished behind the next pillar before any idiot could turn and point. sometimes he took the stairs four at a time. he'd gone weeks shadowing without so much as a reflected silhouette. he did not double-tap like on their account, never left a comment. never even sent them a dm. he considered himself above desperation. if he was getting caught, it was because he meant to be caught. which meant they were smarter or more reckless than he had guessed. "i don't suppose you're going to trust me if i say this isn't what it looks like."

Sasha lived an average life of a woman in college. She went to parties and spent the remainder of her time in the library trying to pass her next exam. It was a cycle that she was growing bored of, but one that at least kept things consistent. On this particular night she had decided to ditch the bars and try walking around campus. Was it her safest option? Probably not, but nothing bad ever happened here. She was more likely to get roofied than she was to get kidnapped. She was making her way up her porch, her hands in her pockets as she felt around for her keys. As she reached the top step she froze, her eyes on the man. "What the hell are you doing because it looks like a stranger is on my porch being a creep."

" thought you had a brand new boyfriend to entertain you , so . . . " voice trails off, raise of eyebrow met with tilt of his head. " why exactly are you here ? "

"you say it like he's my dog..." eyes scan his face as she tries to convince herself this was a good idea. the more she stands in front of him the more sasha starts to regret it. "we said we were going to be friends didn't we? if you had a change of heart you could simply..ignore my presence altogether."

Silas stared down to the bundle. “Unruly wives…” He repeated gruffly. He dragged his cigarette from the ashtray and took a long slow pull. “Can’t say that’s a common request, Mr…?” But he didn’t wait for the name. “You’d best be very clear about what you’re asking me to do.”

Cole looked at the man, cocking his head to the side slightly. He was told this would be simple, no questions would be asked and he could go about his night as if he hadn't just paid a man to kill his wife. Unfortunately he was given the wrong information.

Cole cleared his throat, his gaze shifting. "I'm asking you to take care of something I can't take care of myself. Besides, I've had enough of her anyways. The faster she's gone the sooner I can find a wife who's actually useful."

For a heartbeat, Silas said nothing. He’d seen that look before. In the eyes of men during the war. Men long dead before any bullet found them.

“See, thing about that river…” He began, stepping closer. “is that it’s greedy as hell. It’ll take what you give it, but it won’t give you anything in return. Peace least of all.”

Smoke curled from the corner of his mouth.

“So if you’re set on going, go. If not…” He gave a faint shrug. “Drown your sorrows with a bottle of whiskey instead. Sure costs less than a funeral.”

She looks at him as he spoke, for once the rivers rumblings growing quiet. empty eyes stared into his has she took in what he said. after a beat her gaze was shifting back down to the slithering river.

She hadn't been sure anyways. "My husband doesn't let me drink his whiskey, and i think we both know that means i can't afford a bottle myself."

She took a step back from the edge as she looked back to him.

The bell hardly ever rang past midnight. Those with urgent business at such an ungodly hour knew to use the side door. So when the sound chimed through the silence, Silas immediately set his ledger down.

"Shop's closed." He grumbled loudly. "Unless you're here on behalf of the dearly departed, in which case they can wait 'till morning."

"business is business is it not?" cole shut the door, walking towards desk. "i heard you deal with unruly wives." cole wasn't interested in small talk. he dropped the cloth back onto the desk with a thud. he hoped there was enough cash to take care of the job.

"are you still closed?"

Silas huffed a quiet laugh. “Don’t.” He said after a beat, his voice low and hoarse from the one too many cigarettes he'd smoked over the years. He flicked the embers out into the fog. “City’s got enough ghosts as it is.”

He straightened from the railing, and turned to look at her.

“Besides, won’t find any peace in that river. Just cold and mud.”

"don't," the words leave her with a mocking huff. "if i died the last thing i'd do is come back here as a ghost." she looked back to the flowing water, leaning over just enough to gauge the fall.

"i reckon it's far enough that i'd find peace...wouldn't even know how cold it is...mud never bothered me much anyways." perhaps she was more serious than she had realized. "if you want i can let you leave before i do it."

Silas leaned against the iron railing, a cigarette burning slowly between his fingertips. The fog was rolling in thick across the river. It swallowed the street lamps one by one until the bridge looked as if it were hanging in midair.

He’d come for quiet, for peace, though it seemed someone else had the same idea. A shape lingered only a few feet away.

He took a long drag and blew out the smoke into the mist.

“You thinking of jumping?” He questioned horsely. "Or just admiring the view?”

finally there was silence. no nagging from her husband, no shouting, no demands. here she could exist. ever her own thoughts were at ease. she wondered if he had noticed she was gone or simply wondered why the dishes weren't yet done.

for a moment she wondered if it were him asking her to jump, but when her gaze met the strangers she felt a wave of relief was over her. she wouldn't have to now.

"i haven't quite decided yet," she confessed.
