No offense but Davekats whole dynamic is really important?? Like they work together like no other pairing including either of them could. The thing that makes Davekat special to me is how they just seem to completely and utterly give each other what they need. Dave needs a partner that will break through his façade and really uncover who he is while also helping him let go of his internalized homophobia he had had instilled in his mind this whole time. Karkat needs somebody willing to see past his façade as well (though less than Dave needed this), while also being able to go panquadrant with him. Daves whole “cool kid” façade was a mask that hid a cracked face that Dave was never able to reveal to anybody. Karkat was the ONLY character that quickly and easily found that mask Dave was hiding behind and disregarded it immediately for the “real Dave” instead. Dave also saw right through Karkat’s shallow angry screaming to see what Karkat was really all about. (This is a quality we see in Knights, which, ya know, they both are.) In order to really unlock the true Dave, we also need to shed his internalized homophobia that he had engraved his whole life. There’s no doubt Karkat was able to do that. And, who else had?? Nobody. Karkat was the only character that had been able to get Dave to really discover who he is. With trolls not having a problem with the gender of their partners, he must have helped Dave a lot with his problems, and vise versa with Karkat and his obvious quadrant issues. Anyway I’m rambling

Remember folks, this is not in the “distant past” I am a 1st generation survivor my mother was raped and abused in the Residential school here in Nova Scotia when she was a child, she was taken away from her family and unable to see her siblings. The fallout of the residential school system will be felt by countless people in the newt few generations. Let this never happen again, anywhere in this world.

My grandmother is a survivor of the US residential school era. My grandmother. My father’s mother. Two generations ago. This is not in the distant past in any way. I grew up with her telling me how they would starve the children for days, especially the younger ones, in order to make them more compliant. They were raped and beaten sometimes to the point to where they passed out or worse. They were rarely allowed to go home and only if they had completed all of their “chores.” They were never allowed to speak our languages, practice our cultures, partake in our ceremonies. They were nothing more than prisoners.

My grandfather is a residential school survivor. He’s the man in the blue shirt in the sixth picture. He told me a few stories, but the worst ones were the ones he never told me. The stories I did hear were about how children would be so afraid to sleep at night that they would wet the beds. When the nuns came around to check them, they would get beaten for wetting the bed. There was one time when he was playing outside and he saw the cooks hosing off a piece of rotten meat. As a few maggots dropped off of it, my grandpa asked, “what’s that for?” and the cook replied, “supper.” He said when he finally went home from that place, in his late teens, he couldn’t even speak to his mother. She didn’t even know who he was anymore.

In my town, there’s a graveyard for all the children who never made it home. It’s behind the old Residential School-turned-University. People walk around the grounds at night to freak themselves out and tell ghost stories. Well, the true ghost stories are still alive inside all of the survivors, their children, their children’s children, and on.

it’s kinda cool how our generation has created actual tone in the way we write online. like whether we: write properly with perfect grammar, shrthnd everythin, use capitals to emphasise The Point, use extra letters or characters for emotion!!!!!, and much more - it means we can have casual conversations, effectively make jokes using things like sarcasm that’s usually hard to understand without context and much more. this “incorrect English” has really opened avenues of online conversation that isn’t accessible with “correct English” which is pretty interesting

My class and I literally taught some of the nuances of this to our english teacher, things such as the difference between “yes” and “yes.” or “..” and “…”. It makes perfect sense linguistically that we would create this complexity to ease communication in a medium without body language and tone, but what my teacher was really floored about was that none of this had ever “learned” it, we’re “native speakers” of a whole new type of english.
