Ino is such a gem look how beautiful he is
Ino update: I bought a few new plastic plants for his tank as well as a moss ball. 2.5 gallons seems really small to me and I really wish I could keep him in something better, but this is still better than the 5.5 gallon tank with wayyy too many fish that my friend was keeping him in. He seems to be doing well, he's very active and always exploring his tank and he has a good appetite. The filter was pushing him around so I decided to turn it off, and I'm using an air pump to keep the water circulating a bit. I didn't have any airline tubing or an air stone so I had to improvise with this nasal cannula I stole from the Respiratory Therapy lab at school.
I got some more plants for Ino's tank and managed to take this picture of him even though he's a wiggle butt
Hi everyone, I know it's been a while since I've posted but I'd just like to introduce you all to iNO (pronounced eye-no, it's kind of a dumb respiratory therapy joke). I only have him because one of my friends was keeping him in a 5.5 gallon tank along with a guppy, three neon tetras and a red tailed shark and I explained why that wasn't a good set up and offered to give him a better set up. It's kind of bare-bones and last minute, but I'll do frequent water changes and probably set up my 5.5 gallon tank with live plants once I get home. He should be fine in 2.5 gallons for a while. He is beautiful though, and I think I'm falling in love.
Shamus being shamus
I know it's been a while since I've posted on this blog, but I feel I should let you all know that Shamus died yesterday. I had him for two years.
so I'm broke right now (like, groceries vs rent broke) but I've got a 10 gallon tank with some plants in it that I want to cycle. If I put the water from my betta's 3 gallon in there on water change days would that be enough to get the cycle going?
Not really, no. To get a cycle going you need to dose the water up to 4ppm ammonia at least. If your betta tank is cycled, all you’d be doing is putting nitrate into the water, which won’t do anything. Even if your betta’s tank isn’t cycled, you’d have to keep that tank’s ammonia below .5ppm to keep the fish safe and adding that to the tank won’t do anything either.
If you have fish food, you can add large amounts of that to the tank to decompose and create ammonia. If your fish needs to eat that, though, I wouldn’t waste it.
I would stick with the 3 gallon for now. Put the plants in there! Stay small while you are low in funds. Small can still be healthy, and your betta will be no worse for the wear!
Does anon need to use fish food to generate ammonia? Like could they not use like scraps of people food like wouldn’t a chunk of chicken or tuna or something like that do the trick too?
Just little fish keeping things: finding an algae sponge in your bed

Shamuses tank post-water change.
New addition to the 10 gallon
Water change Sunday: cleaned Shamus' tank, rearranged and added some baby valisineria plants from the 37 gallon. Shamus approves of the new plants but he moved before I got a good picture of him.
That time I took put one of the aquaponics goldfish in a 5.5 gallon to see how big they are...
A PSA to every new fishkeeper out there:
Water conditioner (which includes products such as prime and stress coat) and very safe and very effective products. You do not need to worry about adding too much (I mean don’t dump a bottle in, but doubling or tripling the recommended amount won’t do any harm). You also do not need to leave your buckets of water out for 24 hours to let the chlorine evaporate, the water conditioner will do that pretty much instantly. It won’t interact with other things you might add to the tank. I’ve seen a few posts about people being concerned about water conditioner, so I’m writing this post to let you all know that water conditioner is pretty much a miracle product and it’s very hard to go wrong with it and that you should trust it.
Oh cool, I’ve been wondering about this! I always wondered if it was more harmful to have too much or too little and now I know! Thanks!
It’s also a good first aid when you think something is off in the tank but don’t know what.
True, but some water conditioners are better at relieving stress than others, and some detoxify harmful waste levels. So different brands have their pros and cons!
I highly suggest having BOTH Prime and API Stree Coat. The prime temporarily detoxifies ammonia/nitrite/nitrate. Stress coat helps repair a fishes slime coat and destress them.
hold up hold up for one second… there is one very important exception to this rule: if you are treating your tank with Cupramine, do NOT add ammonia binding water conditioner or any other ammonia binding agent (like Prime). the Cu+2 will be reduced to Cu+ which is about 10x more toxic and can wipe a tank.
it’s best to use a water conditioner without any ammonia binding agents during treatment. if you do use Prime, dose it into a water bucket and let the water sit for 24-48 hours, since Prime only stays active for that long,,,,,, just plan your water changes ahead.
Wow, I didn’t know that, thanks!
I stand corrected

I recommend seachems Prime, it only takes 1ml to treat 10 gallons of water. That’s one thing to look at when buying water conditioner, how much does it take to treat X gallons and how much does it cost and then compare that with other brands.
Well yes I should have probably added that you should always read the instructions because some water conditioners are several times more concentrated than others: some only require a few drops per gallon and others require like a capful per gallon and you'll want to be aware of that

Do you ever just feel really grateful that we live in a world where the laws of physics allow siphons to work.
