The passengers of Koutetsujou even? That would be terrible… Everyone was already going through enough hardships and if they couldn’t even trust their own leader—

“ —— Oh?“ Ayame turned towards the voice, putting her steam-bow back into its stand. Indeed, she mulled Hika’s comment in her head. It was the very first, and hopefully only, time that the people of Aragane Station have seen her in combat.

But Ayame’s frowned pondering quickly turned into her usual soft smile. “I could say the same about you, Hika-san!“ The princess chirped, sliding closer to the other and bending her knees a little to be at Hika’s height. “I always admired how gracefully you swing your machine gun. It must be heavy, but you’re doing a great job!“

"ayame-sama!" catching sight of the girl, he's fast to approach her, almost clueless about the birthday gift he was holding: a small flower bouquet. "ah, this—" shortly eyeing the object in hands before handing it to her, his cheeks blushed a faint red. "this is for you. h-happy birthday." ( from kurusu ofc :3c )

( she just had been pondering over a half of sweet bun how pleasant it would be to have some company at this moment. who would have thought that this wish would come true so quickly? ) As soon as her ears caught the sound of her name eagerly exclaimed, Ayame immediately turned her head towards the source.

It was no one other than Kurusu, her ever-present guardian ( and dear companion ). She did not expect anyone else to come to her, sadly. The young warrior’s company was fine, of course, though someone else, someone new once in a while would bring some fresh air into her life ( was there anyone else left after the destruction of the aragane station? kurusu was the only friend and family she had… ).

“Kurusu… Welcome.“ Ayame greeted the other, then looked down at the blossoms he was holding ( she was used to seeing his hands full with a sharp blade rather than frail blossoms. yet it did not look strange. just new. it even suited him, somehow ). His shy blush completely missed her attention.

Before the princess could inquire about the reason behind the flowers, Kurusu had already provided the answer. “My— birthday…?“ Ayame widened her iris eyes and carefully took the blossoms from the other. She stared at the bouquet, blinking, with both surprise and sort of disbelief. How long has it been since she had celebrated her birthday? ( she could not recall having received any wishes after aragane station’s fall until kurusu came now. a blurry picture of the birthday party that her father and friends had organized for her still lingered in her memory, too… so— it was only a year ago. it was still hard to believe with all the things that have happened ).

Ayame blinked at the bouquet one last time, gently snapping herself out of her thoughts, and looked up at Kurusu ( she kept him waiting… how unladylike ). Her gaze turned soft again and her lips curved into a smile. She took a step closer towards the other and wrapped her free arm around his shoulder, embracing him slowly and briefly ( as if she was approaching a timid animal; to not scare him off ), then just as slowly pulled away. “ —— Thank you, Kurusu. They’re beautiful.“
