“Only a couple hundred? Pish posh,” The seamstress replied with a sassy finger snap, though immediately retracted her hand, fearful of being fired for being sassy. Did Aramis have the power to fire her? She didn’t really want to find out, “Welcome to my world. I’m still recuperating from my last cosplay project.”
Aramis let out a chuckle at the younger woman’s words. “I know, I know.” He laughed. “It’s not the most I’ve spent on a project, but I tend to do a lot of my supply shopping online or at specialty stores.. And let me tell you- it’s a lot easier spending large amounts over the internet, than in front of the check out lady at Micheal’s.” He grinned at her. “What did you cosplay as, if you don’t mind me asking?”
“I hope so. I mean, I might’ve been more excited than her, to be honest. It was a big moment for both of us.” She was only slightly exaggerating, but that had been the highlight of her day. “Thanks,” she responded with a laugh, “And yeah, she totally was. I know we’re not really characters in the show, but I did some research on Bessie before joining the band, and just reading about her life was really interesting.” Zoë shrugged, “She was the real badass, I’ve just got a bass.”
“The bass is a pretty cool instrument though,” Aramis said with a smile. “Yeah, she was pretty badass. It’s sad she’s so often forgotten about, you know? Henry put her through probably just as much as the queens.” He had to admit, he had first heard of Bessie Blount through the television show The Tudors, but had looked up the figures mentioned in the musical, and Bessie’s story had definitely interested him. “Definitely a remarkable woman.”
Matthew nodded over his bowl of turkey soup from his sister. “I believe it,” he said. “My mom was a big crafter before the arthritis did her hands in.” Sheila Bowden was a real talent, and Matthew smiled to think of her. “So what’d you get?” he asked.
“Mostly wool, but a few other bits and bobs,” he said with a chuckle. “You never realize how much wool goes in a project until after you’re halfway through.” He gave a shame of his head. “I think the craft store might be my version of Target. You go in for one thing and leave with way too much.”
Aramis had found a spot backstage to eat the lunch he had brought from home. “Would you believe it if I said I accidentally dropped a couple hundred bucks at the craft store last night?” He asked the other person in the room with a sheepish grin when he was in between bites. “I always forget how quickly things add up.”
“I signed my first autograph today.” Zoë tried to remain nonchalant, but there’s no denying the hint of a smile on her features. “I was just leaving the theatre between shows and this girl just runs up to me, sticks her playbill out, and tells me ‘Bessie’s her favorite lady in waiting’. It was cute, and nice to be appreciated, y’know?”
“Good on you,” Aramis said with a grin. “Sounds adorable- I’m sure you made her whole day.” He was glad for the girl. “I mean, I don’t blame her. Historically, Bessie was super interesting and cool. Add you and your bass into the mix?” He mimed an explosion with his hands. “A recipe for badass.”
