STUDY STUDY STUDY- The Few Days Before Exams
My first exam (modern history) is Wednesday. Today is Sunday. For the past few days my life has been about study, study and more study. Hereās the best tips I can give you:
Start NOW
Flashcards are the best way to study- you learn while making them AND by revising
Mindmaps are also good for connecting ideas
And because they can be messy
You donāt have time to be neat and meticulous (though go ahead if it helps you)
My advice is to just make it legible enough for YOU
Remember, this is for you
Practice papers are your friend
But letās be real, you probably donāt have time
So instead of essays do essay plans, for example
Or practice introductions, thatās useful too. It helps you come up with ideas
Take care of yourself, youāre obviously busy, but take breaks for meals at the very least
Start with the hard stuff and then do the easy stuff
For example, I have been revising history during the day and annotating books at night as part of my nighttime reading
Try and get enough sleep while you can
Donāt forget the big picture
Talk to friends & family if youāre feeling anxious
Aim for 100%- Know as much as you possibly can, even if you donāt expect to get 100
Learn the structure of your exams, itās so much less daunting on the day
Utilise your teachers if you need them
Breathe, itāll be okay
You got this
Donāt forget to prepare the materials youāll need
And go ace those exams :)
how to avoid education burnout
have 3 achievable goals a day: having a laundry list of things to do everyday is super unrealistic, and you just end up feeling bad about yourself because you didnāt accomplish your goals for the day.
leave your sundays open: i love sundays because theyāre my day to chill out and catch up on school work that i wasnāt able to finish during the week.
recognize when youāre at your emotional limits:Ā forcing yourself to get work done when you are unable to comprehend your study material does not benefit anyone.
learn how to say no: people will ask you for your time and it will stretch you to the limit, whether it be at your job, in your extracurriculars, or in your personal life. know when to step back and say no.
take care of yourself physically:Ā take breaks, go for walks, shower regularly, get enough sleep, eat healthy, see your friends
celebrate your accomplishments:Ā go out to eat with friends after a big exam, indulge in a night off after a busy week with some netflix and wine
make a study plan beforehand:Ā it can be daunting to see how much work you need to put in to a class or task beforehand, but this allows you to spread your work evenly so you donāt become overwhelmed.
learn how toĀ ask for help:Ā it is very rare that people make it through school, whether it be high school or university or any graduate program, without needing the advice of others or just a kind soul to vent to. find that person.
never forget your hobbies:Ā you will need things that keep you sane. if you love to play music, write, play volleyball, or cook, make you sure you donāt lose these things. they will become your escape when times get tough.
log off from time to time:Ā it is exhausting to be constantly connected to social media and your email. just physically disconnecting from these for a night to take care of yourself can really help you clear your mind.
It is ok to not want to go out with your friends because you feel like you need to study, or work or any other reason.
Itās not āuncoolā to be smart and prepared and passionate and dedicated. Ignore people who say otherwise.
Wake up happy. Eat well. Go to classes. Talk to people. Clean your room. Do your homework. Pack for tomorrow. Sleep.

youāre working in a field you genuinely enjoy. you have supportive, loving friends. you follow your passions, youāre fluent in your target languages. the 12 new books you ordered will arrive soon. your flat is cozy, decorated with plants and fairy lights. youāre happy. this might seem like some fantasty, but i know this will happen. i believe in you, and you should as well.
no way in hell am i passing this up

My students often ask me: how many times a week should I study? And I tell them this: study like you eat. Do you just eat one enormous dinner on Monday and nothing else for the rest of the week? Of course not, you have small bursts throughout each day to keep you sustained. You donāt cram a weekās worth of food into your mouth at one time; donāt cram a weekās worth of information into your head at one time.
