Appendix A is Awesome!
Appendix A is Awesome!
I am starting a new campaign, and I am having too much fun with Appendix A in the Dungeon Master’s Guide. For those who don’t have the book, Appendix A is a series of tables that allow for the creation of a random dungeon. It’s not the first such tool to ever exist, but I am finding it to be a well-designed one that’s helping me create an excellent first dungeon for my PCs.
There’s an obscene…

Boo. WordPress hasn't been sending post to Tumblr all week. Stupid Jetpack feature.
The Warriner Pit
It's Halloween week! Today's #LitD story: The Warriner Pit
Below is one of few surviving photos of the graffiti that once virtually covered the walls of the Warriner Pit, a concrete access shaft that dips some 15 feet into the ground near Warriner Hall.
The graffiti seen here is but one example of the various Satanic messages that allegedly covered these walls before 1996, when the Administration ordered it sandblasted off. While there were never any…

The Woldt Hall Mirror Story
Friday's #LitD: The Woldt Hall Mirror Story
The Woldt hall story is a “lesser” ghost story–it is not well known, nor well documented, nor even very fleshed out.
The story takes place on the Terrace level of Woldt Hall (i.e. the basement level, 1/2 floor below ground), in one of the typical CMU three-room suites. Resident Assistants in Woldt supposedly know the room number, but will not give it out, since people still live there.…

Calling All Ghosts in Sweeney Hall
Thursday's #LitD: Calling All Ghosts in Sweeney Hall
This is an interesting legend–a one-time event tied in with a death that happened in the same place, both possibly unrelated before the story linked them together.
The Death
The death occurred “some years ago” (dates vary, possibly the 1970’s), in Sweeney Hall, a typical CMU residence hall attached to three other residence halls (Thorpe, Merril, and Beddow). Sweeney is one of many halls that,…

The Elevator Ghost of Warriner Hall
Wednesday #LitD: The Elevator Ghost of Warriner Hall
Warriner Hall stands as the “symbol” building for Central Michigan University. It is the building one sees on flyers, in commercials and advertisements, and on billboards around Michigan. The architectural designs on its face–a 5 story tower topped with an attic and former bell tower–has been turned into a stylized logo for the school. It is CMU’s main administrative building, as well, and has…

The 1998 Massacre Scare
Tuesday's Haunted #LitD tale: The 1998 Massacre Scare
This one’s not quite a ghost story, but it fits into the theme of this blog. And as I happened to be at CMU when this one happened, it’s a story near to my heart.
A Campus Afraid
Just before Halloween of 1998, a story started going around the CMU campus that caused some panic. It concerned a massacre that would befall one of the Residence Halls on campus. The massacre was anticipated because it…

The Lonely Ghost of Barnes Hall
Monday's ghost story: The Lonely Ghost of Barnes Hall #LitD
Central Michigan University’s Barnes Hall is an unattractive “L” shaped blend of two wings, one old (circa 1950s), one significantly newer (1970s), both made of the same brownish brick and off-white paint. The split between old and new is obvious, both outside and in; old section rooms are two-room dormitories, while the newer, three-room “residences” have better paint, better halls, and better…

Just Because *You* Don't Understand Common Core ...
I am so sick of hearing "I can't understand my kids' homework therefore Common Core must be garbage" from other parents. Nope, sorry, the fact that you can't understand it doesn't make it bad. You are not a trained teacher. There is a reason why teachers go to college and get degrees before they are allowed to stand in front of a classroom of fourth-graders. Why do people automatically assume that if they can't understand Common Core, it's the method that's the problem instead of their own limitations?
Oh and that "crazy box math?" It's called Grid Method and its been in use outside the U.S. for years.

If grid method isn't familiar to you, you probably didn't make it to Trig.

The Official-ish Answer to the Sentinel Problem
What’s the best way to spend a Sunday morning? Annoying the designers of D&D. But I have an excuse: I reealllyy needed an answer to this one. I give you: The Official-ish answer to the Sentinel Problem.
The short version: Sentinel triggers after the triggering attack resolves. Which makes a lot of sense. I mean, if not, what is the Sentinel reacting to? He’s reacting to the swing of the weapon.…

Vetch is an online poetry periodical planning to release its first issue in the winter of 2014.
Vetch seeks work by trans poets in trans language. This is not to say that trans people have a single way of speaking to one another, nor that trans language is by necessity revolutionary, but that...

As a college-educated 27-year-old city-dweller, I’ve officially entered the high-frequency marriage decade—I was invited to seven weddings in the past six months alone. And I can’t help but wonder, does it all boil down to tax purposes? Why do we get married?
There is *so much* the author of this article gets right.
