Brynja Excerpt

The only time she had slept in a bed while with the caravan was when she had no choice but to share it with a man, Peter most often and it never was without a painful cost. It didn’t matter how lush even a cot might have seemed compared to her tank, if she had been given a choice, she would have preferred the floor devoid of water. Yet as she laid in the white comfort of her bed those nights felt simultaneously so long ago and not at all. It was bitter sweet as she slept in through most mornings, if for no other reason than that she could, without having to fear being roused with cattle prods. God sakes, why was her past all she could think about now? Rain had greeted the morning in earnest and while that had drenched most people’s matches, for Brynja it was always a source of comfort. It meant she no longer was in a cell of glass walls, at last able to feel the rain on her skin if she so chose to and that alone should have filled her with relief and safety. Which was not to say that she didn’t, but there was just something about being on land that taunted painful memories to resurface and haunt her.

Stretching lazily, Brynja sighed as she looked outside of her window, just letting her mind wander with the sound of the rain right outside. The knock that came was so soft that she barely heard it in her daze, but the voice that followed she could recognize in a full-fledged storm. “Dollface” Brynja said, instantly perking up as her best friend entered and crawled onto her bed, her excitement as contagious as her smile. “This is the extent of my exciting activity” she said, pointing to her bed with a chuckle. Propping up on her elbows, the cuttlefish gave her a big sweet smile, glad beyond words to have her there. Though Brynja made an effort to respect people’s spaces, knowing her tendency to cling a little too much sometimes, poor Benn, it was sometimes much harder done than said. It was like swimming against the stream’s flow, and worse yet if she had a genuine and strong bond with the merrow. And Oceane , well, she was the closest, to even have shared a fraction of what she had gone through in the freak show and that wasn’t something that Brynja parted with easily at all.

After having been captured and forced to entertain humans in a touring freak show for fifty years, she isolated herself after being rescued in the sea for a long time (give or take twenty years) and so acclimating to a new pod on land has been a slow process. One thankfully aided by many members of the pod, including one of her closest friends Océane and especially their leader, the Apex, Benneit. Slowly she's working her way to Beta along with training from of Constantin and Rikard, having been entrusted by Morrigan as the Eurayle, the third Enforcer of the pod. Currently she's also been appointed to help healers aid the sick in the pod while the Apex finds a way to combat the illness that is raking through the pod mercilessly. All the meanwhile her crush on the second in command, the Lexium Jesper, keeps growing, along for his mate Danae and giving in to the strong attraction she holds for Fox Brumby, an FBI agent that questions her about the Pride Parade incident. Yet she's still to meet a great white shark, Destrian, that'll also make her blush with every toothy grin.

It took less than a minute to bridge the gap from his little corner to the bar where they sat, certainly enough to arrive by the time man was drawing back. Gray blue eyes briefly connected with Izzy as he approached the man from behind, grabbing his right hand and quickly, but subtly pulling it back as he applied pressure on the wrist at an odd angle to lock it. As much as he loved nothing more than to slam the man’s head against the bar he had to be careful with how far he could go, not just for Izzy’s sake but for the fact that they were in a public venue and extreme violence would surely be questioned. Low key was the name of the game tonight. The man had no idea how lucky he was. Shifting slightly so that he could pin the man against the bar’s edge, he pressed harder onto his back. With as much as his solid weight as the angle he was holding the man’s arm, he forced the blonde to lean forward a bit following in tune as he neared his lips to his ears. “If you want to keep your arm in one piece” he emphasized as he pressed harder onto his wrist, guaranteed to create extra pulses of pain, “I’d advise you not to pull that stunt again. Understood?”

A wereleopard, Benjamine, has come across Marcus and mistakes him for someone who looks like a dead ringer. She means him no harm, doesn’t even know him and their meeting has been completely by chance, but...not for the Sicilian, according to his overactive mind.

The fact that she had mistaken him for someone else meant little to him as his mind raced with all of the possibilities, including some of the more ridiculous ones that only a paranoid mind could spin into a working theory, and the truth of her presence became sharp and frighteningly clear…

The woman was there to kill him.

What then did he make of her calling him by a different name? Well that was easy - it was a ploy to distract him or fool him into a false sense of security, probably to get close enough to set that nasty piece of hardware right up against his temple and pull the trigger. It even made more sense considering she was nearly a foot smaller than him and would need all the upper hand she could muster and design by craftily manipulating the situation to her favor. Well, Marcus Lorenzo wasn’t about to give her that satisfaction, not that easily. If she wanted to set his head on a pike and parade it to whoever employed her for the hit, well fuck, she was going to have to work hard for it.
