Born Eden Marie Draper, she grew up in Salt Lake City to very strict and over bearing parents with her twin brother.
The way she was brought up wasn't like most. There was strict schedules but the like the usual. She woke up early and cleaned the house, ate breakfast, went to school, came home and did her homework, went to whatever activity was planned for that day, went home and cooked dinner with her mother for her brother and father. It all sounded normal but something was just off..
With the life she was raised in came more rules. No hot drinks. No caffeinated soda. No alcohol. No smoking. No drugs. Modesty. No dating before 16. Clean hairstyles and cuts. No swimming or boating on a Sunday as the devil worked the water that day. You must rest on a Sunday so no academic work, house work or fun. Only church on Sunday. Pray before every meal. She must obey.
The lifestyle was extreme. Her every move controlled by her parents but also her church. The way she acted, styled her hair, dressed, her day to day activity was all controlled. She must be a good girl who obeyed every waking moment. Her purpose here was to worship and provide for her church and the men in her community. She was to provide for her future husband and have children. That was her duty.
As she got older though her views began to skew from what she was being taught, the idea of her church leading being the one to decide who would marry and create life with just felt wrong. Every time she started to question it though had her feeling guilty. Going against everything she was taught made her feel wrong, she must obey!
On her 18th birthday the church leader summoned her to the church. Her parents excited about it, they knew what this was but didn't spoil the surprise. Once there she was informed that God himself had spoken to their leader like he always did and told him that Eden was to be married and they knew who her husband was. Everybody in the room was thrilled except her. She was distraught. She attempted to force a smile but she felt sick.
That night she left. No note, no explanation, no goodbye, she left in the middle of the night without a single bag. She walked until her feet hurt and then walked some more. She walked until she physically couldn't anymore and she knew she was in a safe distance from her home and then hitchhiked. They dropped her off at a motel with some money for a room and then she rested. The next day she did the same, walked until she couldn't and hitchhiked some more.
Eden eventually landed in California. Once here she decided on creating a new life for herself, she changed her name and became Arlo Marshall, she reinvented herself as a person which took many many months.. years.. to do. She had to unlearn everything she had been taught and learn how to be a person once more, a person with freedom.
She discovered music that she liked, clothes, food, drinks, she experimented with alcohol and even some drugs, she figured out she was attracted to women, she was no longer Eden she was Arlo.
