it had hurt her for him to give her the silent treatment as she thought they were having fun. emmeline had 'bumped' (more like chased) into mateo in the lobby but with how it had gone, it left her feeling no better - when would she learn to just leave it alone? the mood of the day was bringing out all of her negative feelings all at once. taking the cigarette and the lighter from the other, she put it between her lips and frowned as she lit it. emmeline never did care much for the taste of it but the action of doing it was soothing.

"people are arseholes." the swede shrugged, her frown now etched heavily into her brow. "i'd rather not to be honest." the woman could feel herself getting upset and the last thing she wanted to do was embarrass herself out here (she was far too good at doing that too easily - it was best for her to shut it down before it got to that point. "it doesn't matter, anyways. think the emotions of today are just getting to me."

"i've been used to losing people, my whole life." she starts, pacing around in front of the other as she takes a hit from the cigarette, before continuing. "i lost my mom when i was a kid, left my dad because he was being a big fucking prick, i—" she realizes she was pouring her soul out to somebody she's not really had conversations like this before. "sorry...it just fucking hurts. i just don't fuckin' understand...why him? he doesn't fucking deserve it... he was good to everybody..."

maisie shook her head almost immediately, stepping a little closer without really thinking about it. ❝ don't apologise, ❞ she said, softly. ❝ you don't have to do that with me. ❞ her expression had gentled completely now, concern written plainly across her face as she listened to antoinette speak. ❝ and honestly ?? ❞ she added quietly, ❝ i think most people would rather hear you talk about him like this than pretend you’re fine in there. ❞

she let the words settle for a moment, cigarette forgotten between her fingers. ❝ he sounds…really special. ❞ not in the vague, funeral way people said about the dead. she meant it. every person she'd spoken to today carried some version of devon with them, and none of them sounded the same - except for the kindness. ❝ sometimes awful things happen to people who don’t deserve it at all, ❞ she answered, hoping her words could offer her some peace. ❝ and i think that's the part nobody really knows how to live with. but from the way everyone talks about him...i don't think someone like that really disappears as easily as we want them to. ❞

THE YOUNGER WOMAN DID have a point. it was so easy to feel like you were alone in your grief, like you were the only one being crushed by such a huge, insurmountable loss. the loss of devon wouldn't just be felt by the ones who cared about him, of course it wouldn't. he was kind to everyone who passed him, and he had listeners who hung onto every word he said. and now, he was gone forever. before any of them could even blink.

" that's kind of ya. people tell me i've got one'a the worst cases of restin' bitch face the world has ever seen. " june laughs weakly. one of those people had just so happened to be devon, usually followed up by a gentle nudge to the side in jest. " y'got a point... he really did change everyone he crossed paths with in some way, didn't he? " most of them for the better. she certainly didn't know who she'd be without his friendship. " no matter if y'knew 'im or not... we're glad t'have you. he deserves to be truly celebrated. even if it'll never feel like enough. "

she nods. for her to say she knew him felt like it barely scratched the surface. " he... he was one'a the first friends i made when i graduated. i was an idiot with an art degree who thought everythin' was gonna be handed t'me, when i reality i just didn't know what the actual fuck i was doin' and didn't know where t'start. the rest is history. "

a faint smile tugged at maisie's mouth at that, softer this time. ❝ i don't know, ❞ she said lightly. ❝ i think i've seen worse. ❞ she let the comment settle for a moment before her expression gentled again, quieter now as she listened. maisie was glad she had this opportunity to get to know the other woman, and found herself feeling at ease. well, as much as a person can at a funeral.

she took another slow drag from her cigarette, listening quietly as june spoke about him. there was something strangely intimate about hearing fragments of a person through other people’s memories. everyone was carrying around a different version of devon, and she was lucky enough to be the one to try and fit the pieces together. ❝ i think that’s why it feels so strange in there, ❞ she admitted after a moment. ❝ hearing all these stories and realising how many lives he managed to wedge himself into. he sounds like he was an amazing person. ❞

her gaze drifted toward june again, gentler now. ❝ sounds like he found you at a pretty important point in your life. ❞ not a question. just an observation. ❝ i think everyone leaves college convinced they know exactly what they're doing right up until reality punches them in the face. i gave up on the idea of college before i could even begin. ❞ she probably could have done with someone as grounding as devon. ❝ it sounds like he made things a little less scary for you. ❞

maisie's expression softened slightly at the mention of his daughter, something quieter settling in her chest at the image of devon stopping to give her a fist bump in passing. ❝ i think little kids are usually pretty good judges of character, ❞ she said softly. ❝ they can tell when someone's genuinely kind. ❞ now that he mentioned his daughter, maisie was sure she had seen the two somewhere in their apartment block before. ❝ how has she been with the whole - ❞ her voice trailed off, as she tried to think of a word that even began to encapsulate whatever the fuck was happening.

Her pause was longer than she intended. She felt like her brain was active but dormant at the same time. G was thankful for the apology, it gave her something to respond to as she wasn't sure if she could answer the first question yet. "It's fine." Enzo holds his hand out to accept a cigarette. He would find himself coming outside for some air a lot today, big crowds filled with upset people were just never his thing. He was an awkward person in these kinds of social situations, he never knew how to really comfort others.

"Shit is rough in there. I don't know how much longer I can take it, you know?" Enzo moved over on the bench slightly to allow room for Maisie to take a seat with him. "I didn't really know the guy all that well so it kind of feels odd when people are sharing these great memories with me and then expect me to tell them an amazing story back."

truthfully, sav hadn't fully pondered too much on the whole murder aspect of devon's death. now that maisie had brought it up, it was enough to leave anybody on edge. why devon of all people .... and was anybody next? "i wasn't entirely super close with him either, more in my youth," the girl admitted, taking a small drag from her own cigarette as she spoke. "he still didn't, um, deserve his fate though."

pausing for another moment, she shook her head." "no, you're fine. i don't mind ... i think we all need a bit of a breather at some point today, right?" savannah shrugged her shoulder slightly.

antoinette didn't want to break down like this, not in front of anybody, even maisie. part of her always feels guilty whenever people would be there for her in exchange of nothing, even though it was also something devon had told her not to worry about, that people would help with an open heart, nothing in exchange, she still couldn't help it, it was hard to just deprogram. "i've drowned myself with work, i've taken double shifts, doing on dates with people i've matched with on this app just to distract myself...it's stupid. you think he'd hate that?"

IN THE SECONDS AFTER devon's service ends -- and the priest lets everyone know that there will be food in the other room prepared by the silver vine, june is stuck to cerys' side like superglue. she had held the other woman's hand throughout the entire service in their pew, thumb caressing the knuckle to remind both of them that the other was right there. that neither of them were going anywhere. and yet, june isn't going to hold cerys back from grieving with other people, even if without her -- june feels strangely unmoored. the healthy thought is to be here, of course it is. but there is nothing more that june wants to do than hide. shut the rest of the world out.

she is so deep in thought between sips of her drink, that she realizes she's been aimlessly staring.

fuck, what she really needs is a cigarette. a cigarette and the cheapest beer money could possibly buy, which probably inevitably would taste like gasoline.

when she emerges from the daze, shaking her head ever so slightly as if she's a nervous chihuahua -- she releases an exhale before she speaks. " sorry if i looked like a fuckin' creep just then... i was starin' off int'a space and y'just so happened t'be there... " at least it was a certain amount of comfort to know that not a single human could possibly be good at processing something like this. unless you were a psychopath. " sorry. " june soon quietly apologizes. after a moment, she's able to force out a thin-lipped smile. " did y'know him? or are y'just... payin' your respects? “

devon had been a loss to emmeline and she wouldn't allow anyone to argue with it. she was the type of person to get attached fast and once that bond was made, she would do everything she could to keep it afloat. what she never realised was that some things were better left unsaid. after consuming a fair bit of alcohol beforehand, the woman had retreated outside for some air and peace - too many questions for her liking..

it was short-lived when the other imposed themselves upon her but there was an offering. "fuck it, yes... please?" she had been taught manners. "it's awful. my friend and to top it all off the guy i'm dating or was... he's here and i get the impression he actually doesn't even like me that much..." the woman shrugged. "so, please, if you're offering..."

it took a lot in antoinette to be present for this funeral, she had been crying some nights, rereading the news, going through they old photos together, remembering devon's advises to her whenever she would be struggling with something. she would sometimes forget and hover over his contact to call him about the sadness she'd feel, but then she realizes, devon's gone. he was somebody she leaned on when she left her father's home until she was able to stand on her own two feet. what could be the reason for all this? she was yet to understand, along with the people who continues to question it, if they could ever find out the truth one day.

she almost sprinted out of the room minutes after she came in, not being able to bear the pain of losing somebody she'd always thought of as her brother. once she hears footsteps, she quickly wipes her tears, not wanting anybody to see her breaking. "i may need one, too." she clears her throat. "devon would be lecturing me right now if he finds out i'm smoking again." she stand close to the woman, turning to look at her for a moment. "shit's hard to understand...why would somebody do this to him..."

her gaze flicked toward her then, catching what she hadn't quite managed to hide, and something in her expression softened. ❝ i don't think there's any version of this that makes sense, ❞ she admitted, voice low. ❝ not really. ❞ she let that sit for a moment before adding - ❝ but you don't have to figure it out right now. ❞ maisie wasn't even sure if what she was saying was making any sense. ❝ how are you holding up ?? ❞

today hadn't exactly been easy for anyone attending devon's funeral, regardless of if they were close to him or not. she could feel the emotion, the tension that was seeping through the air. while it had been a beautiful service in attempts to capturing and honoring his life - it was still heavy. the girl found herself outside of the building, needing some fresh hair and away from all the crowds inside. exhaling the cigarette smoke from her mouth, she nodded her head at the person who had apporached her from a distance.

"you have the same idea as me?" the blonde questioned.

Arlo turned to face Maisie before offering a gentle, welcoming smile. "I don't smoke but you're welcome to join me." She nodded in agreement. If anybody knew how awkward this whole thing was or how out of place Maisie would feel attending this funeral then it was definitely Arlo. It was known that the dark haired girl did not get along with the man but it felt wrong to not show face and pay her respects.
