What should a person wear to a firing range?
A firing range is a unique, specialized facility that allows enthusiasts and professionals alike to hone their skill set. You can practice proper handling and discharge of a firearm in a contained, safe environment. If needed, you may also consult a trained professional to offer instruction on how you can improve. Gun ranges are an asset to anyone wanting to grow with their firearm abilities, but like any other facility that holds potential risks and dangers, there are rules you must follow in order to ensure the safety of yourself and others. Some of the most important gun range safety regulations include clothing restrictions. Let’s get familiar with what those rules are and why they exist.
Proper Torso Coverings for Firing Ranges
When you’re at a firing range, the goal is to gain valuable practice. Wearing a shirt that leaves you vulnerable to potential safety hazards, such as spent casings, takes away from the overall experience, may put yourself and others at risk, and could potentially leave a mark. If you’re firing a weapon, hot casings are inevitable. They aren’t, however, unavoidable. Too many shooters have these pieces of hot brass fly down their shirt mid-practice, which is an unwelcome disruption and uncomfortable experience at best. At worst, it can distract the shooter from basic gun range safety (never point your gun at others, keep your finger off of the trigger unless you intend to shoot, etc.). These accidents and potential negligent discharges are easily avoidable by choosing the correct torso covering. Always avoid low-cut tops, tank tops, and other apparel that is this or leaves the chest overly exposed.
A Pair of Comfortable Pants
First time shooters might not know which pants are most suitable for the equipment they will be bringing or should plan for future gun range visits. Regardless of what you’ll be equipped with, you should plan to wear sturdy pants that allow comfort when bending and moving. Tight pants will lead to discomfort and an unenjoyable range visit. Instead, wear something that provides a bit of elasticity or stretchiness. If you’ll be bringing other equipment, having additional pockets for magazines is a plus, too. For those planning on wearing a holster, don’t forget something with sturdy belt loops. Again, hot brass is always a consideration, even if shorts are permitted at the range.
Protective Footwear (Always Closed-Toe)
It might be a redundant reminder, but spent casings are always a concern. Because of this, you should always avoid flip-flops, sandals, and other open footwear that can endanger you. Gun ranges constantly have heavy cases and other range gear being moved around, including your own, and having a large range bag dropped on your toes will probably leave a mark. A good pair of comfortable boots or sneakers with ankle support will do the job just fine. Especially in outdoor ranges, you should consider how much movement you’re planning for and wear the corresponding pair of closed-toe shoes.
Personal Protective Equipment
Basic safety equipment is required for gun range safety. Eye and ear protection can usually be rented from the firing range, or you can bring your own pair. This equipment will protect some of the most sensitive and vulnerable areas of your body from damaging noises or debris.
For outdoor ranges, you should consider wearing a baseball cap to protect you from the sunlight and loose flying fragments of brass or other material. Even if you’re wearing protective glasses, casings can land behind them if you’re not protected by a hat’s bill.
The Go-To Firing Range Attire
There are several successful combinations to wear to the gun range that comply with basic gun range safety, but there are some outfit combinations that will provide for the most optimal experience when shooting. Remember these tips when dressing for your safety, comfort, and efficiency:
High-collar t-shirt that protects the chest (long sleeves is better)
Stretchy pants with pockets and reinforced belt loops (for holster and easy-access storage)
Closed-toe shoes (something that accommodates for movement, stability, and protection)
PPE (at the least, eye and ear protection)
What To Avoid Wearing at a Gun Range
Every gun range will have its own list of specific rules, but they’re mostly the same in content. Here’s what Armory Ranges specifies for gun range attire:
