cancer treatments
Chemotherapy is a form of treatment using drugs called chemotherapeutic agents that destroy tumour cells. It is a very strong treatment modality and though it acts on cancer cells, some effect on the normal body tissues do occur, leading to side effects.
Common effects are: hair loss, nausea and vomiting, loose motions, weakness and mouth ulcers.
Many of these are preventable or minimized using modern medicines given as a pre-medication before the chemotherapy.
Chemotherapy may be used to shrink tumours before surgery [neoadjuvant], during surgery [perioperative, commonly as intraperitoneal chemotherapy], after surgery [adjuvant], or as the sole treatment usually for advanced cancers, which have spread to other organs [palliative intent].

What are the treatments available for Colon Cancer?
Surgery is the main treatment for this disease, which consists of removal of the portion of the rectum with the tumour and rejoining the intestine above and below.
In some patients, the tumour may be large and extend beyond the bowel wall, in this situation, radiotherapy is needed to shrink the tumour so that surgery can be performed. The gap between radiation and surgery is usually 8 - 10 weeks to allow the radiation reaction to disappear.

Most patients with cervical cancer present at a late stage, with large tumours; which requires radiotherapy along with chemotherapy [Chemoradiation] to control the cancer.
In early stages, surgery consisting of removal of the uterus, lymphatic tissues around it, and the pelvic lymph glands is required. This operation is routinely performed robotically by us and gives excellent outcomes and early discharge from the hospital.
