Why are paintings not vandalized as often as they could be?

What is restraining people?

At the moment, I'm writing a 'dissertation' or 'thesis', (depending on what you like to call it) on The Catholic Influence on 15th Century Italian art. As you can imagine, it's proving a mixture of things: difficult, interesting and insightful. With so many current affairs at the moment centering around Catholicism with the Pope's resignation and the numerous scandals that continue to keep coming out regarding the church, to discover more about the church in itself is interesting. However, adding the art element into it is even more interesting. I've nearly finished reading Michael Baxandall's 'Painting and Experience' about 15th century art and that has helped me learn a great deal. Their influence on art is shocking! Centuries worth of art probably wouldn't have been produced without the church' money. Focusing solely on the 15th century is again a challenge but it's a positive one.

I hope I can post it as soon as it's been marked (I'm doing it as part of an 'EPQ' - a scheme in my school) and if I were to post it now, I'd be disqualified and condemned so best save it for later!

Where is the line between modern art and any art that came before it? Everybody has a differing opinion on it. Some argue it to be Picasso and his ideaology, Manet and the way he divided what was ultimately a form of Renaissance art into modern art and some argue it to be Turner and his impressionistic streaks that run throughout his work. Other people may have other opinions again but it's interesting to debate about. What was the first people of modern art? Was there ever one piece that changed it all? What comes after modern art and then post modern art?
