Expressive Portraits of Animals Reflect Powerful “Human” Emotions

Belgian photographer Vincent Legrange is currently working on an ongoing project that is inspired by his undying love for animals. Human Animal is a series of portraits that displays both domestic pets and wild animals. Each image is refined and solemn, focusing on the animals’ unique features in understated tones and colors. ‘‘Today most people photograph just people, but only a few photograph animals,“ explained Legrange to Yatzer. "I tried to photograph the animals as humans, depicting their emotion and human-like characteristics in a sombre way.’’

Behind the scenes of each expressive image, photographing the animals was no easy task for the animal lover. They were constantly moving around, so he had to repeatedly rearrange his props and lights to accommodate their ever-changing positions. Despite these difficulties, many of the portraits appear peaceful and calm, making viewers believe that the cats, dogs, reptiles, and birds are having a moment of inner reflection.

Kent Williams has built up a formidable reputation as a powerful contemporary painter. His is a bold realism with combined attributes of abstraction and neo-expressionistic sensibilities. His work is characterized by strong gestural forms combined with areas of arresting detail, rendered with rich dynamic brushwork. Williams’ approach to his subjects is often subjective and intense. Whether through multi-figured compositional complexity and suggestive narrative, or with the straight-forward lone human form, there is often autobiographical narrative at play. Favorite models, friends, and the artist himself all play a role in the human story of his paintings. Williams lives in Los Angeles. He has two sons, Kerig Sun and Ian Kai.

Canismo is an artistic movement created by a group of dogs that aims to help with the support and adoption of sheltered animals. The shake of the paint reveals a remarkable exercise of freedom, where each drop of ink bears the stain of prejudice. The combination of different colours in the paintings shows the mixture of breeds, as random and as beautiful as each mongrel dog.

Sam Droege is Official Photographer of US Bees

Sam Droege tracks bees for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). This work has become vital as bee populations have declined due to colony collapse. The work of Sam Droege and his colleagues has produced these extraordinary pictures of bees and other insects. Far from being fearsome these bees and insects become magical when viewed so close. They shine and shimmer, revealing delicate limbs and antennae. Sam Droege explains that,

Once you blow [the bees] up to the size of a German shepherd and they have good hair, people start paying attention,” he says. “They’re like aliens from another world.VIA

The Incredible Biro & Gold Leaf Fantasy Art of Rebecca Yanovskaya

Rebecca Yanovskaya is a freelance illustrator working in the fantasy, sci-fi and horror genres. She frequently illustrates mythological stories, natural forces, and aesthetically strong characters. Rebecca’s influences include decorative arts, neoclassical and Pre-Raphaelite arts, and theatrical costuming. Despite most artists in her genre using digital and traditional painting tools, she has made the choice to construct her pieces with ballpoint pen and gold leaf. As one of the only primarily ballpoint pen artists working in fantastic realism, her work is easy to identify. A combination of epic scope and moody atmosphere define her signature style, in what can be described as the “Art of the Sublime”.
