Oh Destiny 2 my love. Per Audacia Ad Astra...
“In a world in which we are used to traveling at truly high speed, why is it so exciting to go 8 knots in a 35-foot schooner? Maybe it’s because it’s nearly double her average speed. Maybe it’s because if you sit to leeward you’re really close to that stream of bubbles hissing down the side and can sense the power transferred from wind force to forward motion by a complex array of wooden construction, spars, cordage, and sails- Motion that raises a beautifully curved quarterwave right at your shoulder and sends it out across the water to make known a vessel’s passing.”

Somebody at work keeps adjusting one of the perimeter cameras to have this beautiful artistic angle on the museum in a historical building across the way. The sun sets just behind it and the whole sky turns golden-blue, clouds streaked across the sky above. The lush tree line beneath the museum is perfectly lined up along the rule of thirds and the building itself towers above, almost mythical in its evening glory. Like damn, take a still from this camera and send it to the museum to frame and hang on their wall. I do need the camera to be pointing at the parking lot. Tho
The setting sun bounces off the skyscrapers downtown and hits the museum's windows and every one of them turns the same golden hue as the sky behind, reflected in the trees just starting to turn golden-orange beneath. The bottoms of the clouds take on the slightest tinge of purple and birds circle above, speckling the evening sky as they call autumn's last farewell. Someone's car got broken into in the parking lot last week, Tammy, point the damn camera at the cars

I think aliens would find astronauts charming with their stocky limbs and helmets that look like a big shiny eyeball. I think they would own marketable plushies of them or perhaps a labubu style keychain

Olympic National Park Travel Poster, digital artwork based on an acrylic plein air painting I made near the top of High Ridge Trail last summer.
This was one of the most memorable hikes I've ever done, and it was SO worth hauling my entire painting setup all the way to the very top of the trail. I can't wait to go back!
I wanna watch Iron Lung, but I don't do well with Horror™
I have friends who love Horror™.
They watch it, and send me a scary-meter and heads up.
Pretty much, this is what happens:
A small fun thing I noticed about Murderbot's narration in Fugitive Telemetry:
This is how Murderbot describes JollyBaby:
Tell me its name is not JollyBaby. It was five meters tall sitting in a crouch and looked like the mobile version of something you used to dig mining shafts.
And this is the Murderbot vs Balin fight getting interrupted:
The impact knocked me off Balin and I landed two meters away. SecUnits don't stun easily and I managed to hang on to the weapon, but I'd damaged an ankle joint and struggled to get upright. Then a giant scoop thing slammed down in front of me. For .05 of a second I had no clue what it was, then I picked up my drone inputs. JollyBaby the cargo bot had just put its hand down between me and Balin.
(emphasis mine)
Fascinating, right? Murderbot talked mad shit earlier about how pissed it was with Tellus's humanized body language, anthropomorphizing itself for human convenience or whatever, but here as soon as MB realizes the "giant scoop thing" is JollyBaby's, it switches to calling it a "hand."
JB apparently can sit in a crouch, which could MAYBE mean that it's humanoid in design, but- I dunno about you guys, I was not imagining "something you used to dig mining shafts" looking in any way like you ought to describe it as having "hands." (Link to my favorite art of JollyBaby ever, it's 100% how I imagine it.)
What gives, Murderbot? What's with the shift in terminology? Are you instinctively empathizing with JollyBaby and so using the terms of your own body? Are you, too, anthropomorphizing JollyBaby for the sake of making it familiar to your implied audience--emphasizing for us the way JB is not "just" a machine but a person getting in between two participants in a violent conflict? Or are you just not bothering to look up what the proper term for a scoop thing is? What, can't a guy (a bot) just have some servos (scoop things), is that not good enough for you, Murderbot?
