Lost for 1,600 years, the royal quarters of Cleopatra were discovered off the shores of Alexandria. A team of marine archaeologists, led by Frenchman, Franck Goddio, began excavating the ancient city in 1998. Historians believe the site was submerged by earthquakes and tidal waves, yet, astonishingly, several artifacts remained largely intact. Amongst the discoveries were the foundations of the palace, shipwrecks, red granite columns, and statues of the goddess Isis and a sphinx. The Egyptian Government plans to create an underwater museum and hold tours of the site.

Arena Chapel built by ENRICO SCROVEGNI to expiate the sin of usury. Lamentation: shallow stage, diagonal cliff points to main action. Modeling indicates direction of light. Range of emotions. Grieving angels above.

Madonna Enthroned by CIMABUE and GIOTTO

tempura on panel. Mary as the Throne of Wisdom points to Christ as the way to salvation.

Cimabue: Byzantine manner, flat. Thin and elegant. Flecks of gold define drapery folds.

Giotto: Mary's breast and knees can be seen under drapery. Angels stand more naturally around the gothic throne. Mary is more human.

Giotto designed the campanile. Wide, open. Heavy piers allow side aisles to flow into nave. Lighter interior. Facade finished in 19th century.

Beauvais Cathedral

This cathedral was a product of the Gothic artist's desire to build taller and taller. It was too tall and with the wind power at that height, part of the cathedral fell. This marked the time when Gothic artists stopped aiming for verticality.
