Im so glad you made this post because as a medievalist I've literally had people go "Ew! Wasn't everyone dirty back then?" No! People have always liked being healthy and clean and they weren't stupid or even ineffective. Like, there's literally a medieval poultice from a document called Bald's Leechbook, an anglo-saxon medieval manuscript (which in itself is unusual, but that's another topic) that can kill MRSA and other somewhat less alarming bacteria.

In my own research on water management I've found proclamations and council decisions to ban animals from drinking from a human water source, banning people from doing laundry in that same water source, banning the processing of flax into linen within a certain distance of a well (it requires time rotting - imagine the smell and then remember that bad smells = ill health for these people!), and physicians had to be licensed and were paid by and were accountable to the local government.

People knew you had to avoid transmission of disease even if they didn't have the technology to understand the specific mechanisms in place. That bubonic plague suits were as effective as they were is hugely impressive and OP is 100% correct to say so.

So we've had a year of importing cattle from Mexico during a screwworm outbreak without monitoring the outbreak that we already knew about. Mexico's outbreak is pretty bad btw, and cases have been found not just in cattle and dogs but also humans. I assume the rest of Central America too. "Fascism"—New Federal Rule Would Require Federal Funding Recipients To Deny Trans People Exist

The rule could have heavy impacts towards trans people across society.

Last week, the Trump administration quietly released a sweeping new federal rule that would use funding threats to force institutions across the country to reject transgender people. The 400-page proposed regulation would codify the administration's anti-trans executive orders into binding federal policy, imposing a blanket prohibition on federal funds going toward "gender ideology"

The proposed rule, formally titled "Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance," rewrites the government-wide framework governing all federal grants across every agency. Among its most consequential provisions, it requires that before a federal grant recipient can receive money, the award must pass a "pre-issuance review" conducted by a political appointee—not a career expert or peer reviewer—to ensure it is "consistent with applicable law, Federal agency priorities, and the national interest." The regulation explicitly instructs these appointees to screen for "denial by the recipient of the sex binary in humans or the notion that sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic." [...] An institution that acknowledges transgender people exist—through its policies, its training, its healthcare, its bathroom access, its HR procedures, its name-change processes—could be deemed to "deny the sex binary" or to “support the notion that sex is mutable” and have its federal funding blocked.

Importantly, the gender ideology prohibition has no age limitation—hospitals could be targeted not just for providing care to minors but for providing gender-affirming care to adults, because prescribing hormone therapy to a transgender patient of any age could be deemed promoting the belief that "sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic."

This is all very bad and horrible, but I want to be clear that it’s worse and more sweeping than just eliminating trans research.

This torches everything. And I do mean everything.

A very abbreviated list of its ramifications include (but are not limited to):

ending funding for ALL DEI related initiatives

allowing the government to terminate grants at any point for any reason

preventing researchers from publishing, going to conferences, and being part of academic societies

requiring that topics must support the president’s agenda.

What this means, and if anything I’m under selling it, is the death of science and research in America. It allows the government to restrict any topic they please at a whims notice, putting officials who have no background in the topic in charge of deciding funding continuity. It controls what gets researched and if/how researchers are allowed to share their discoveries. There are no books to burn if the government never allows them to be written. This is fascism plain and simple.

Please, if you only ever write one public comment, this is the one to do.

Unsurprisingly there's no shortage of heinous shit in the proposed rule change. Some more:

A ban on international collaboration with a list of the "scary" countries (like China, one of the US's strongest research partners despite It All), and a presumptive ban on ALL OTHER international collab.

An end to any binding peer review process in funding. All review will be by Trump stooges, deciding what has scientific merit. This isn't the top headline evil thing about this rule change, but it means that even well-meaning, very careful scientific review boards can't try to evade censorship. JD Vance is essentially in charge of deciding whether your metabolic enzyme computational model can exist or not.

You can't work with your network of colleagues, and nobody with a shred of expertise will help decide what's worthy of funding. One of the only systems the US has ever deserved to be even a little proud of, into the shredder for no benefit at all.

i would strongly disagree with that. Yes, he designed one of the most famous building ever in the international style, the world trade center, but that wasn't until well into the development and adoption of the style across the architectural world. If anything, the main motif of his career is his arches, and he used them liberally at a time when the arch was well fallen out of favor specifically because of modernist styles like the international style that were obsessed with the advantages of the kind of squared off shapes that could be achieved with steel beams, with the architectural world moving away from more traditional arches. He did a lot of really cool and interesting things with them. it's why the bottom of the WTC looked like that. The man loved an arch.
