Ever since we got a new boss at my job my life started to become more and more fucking infuriating

saw an elderly woman walking around with a tote bag whose design were the four AO3 fic category squares and she very excitedly asked if i was a reader or a writer bcs nobody else at the con had recognized it, and after telling her that i've been writing fic since fanfic.net, she solemnly nodded and explained that she'd been reading fic since "the days of personal websites" but that she only started writing fanfic when she was 47 and oh my god when i tell you that i genuinely teared up on the spot!!!!! like!!! HELL YEAH???? LITERALLY NEVER TOO OLD TO START WRITING. NEVER TOO OLD TO WRITE AND SHARE YOUR FIC.

her enthusiastic "i'm a very nice and bubbly person, i swear! but i love writing angst and major character death :)" nearly took me the fuck out.

Honestly funny how Kishimoto went about the whole "monster" thing in Naruto

There's a whole arc about a kid, who was made into a monster, who was regarded as such his whole life to the point he believed it and acted how he was expected to, only to finally be recognized for who he was – a scared and unloved child. Gaara found support and got rid of his monster status, becoming one of the most beloved and influential shinobi ever

And then Kishimoto pointed at Orochimaru and said "well that one was actually just born evil, lmao"

Cause the series never really provides any sort of substantial reasoning about how or why Orochimaru became the way they are, it's all diminished to "well the kid is evil and ambitious by default." Like yes, there are crumbles of what can be a back story that somewhat explains their villain story, but half of it is purely accidental and wasn't written with purpose, and the other half is so generic it explains nothing

It's just funny how Kishimoto doesn't believe the very things he's trying to convey

I would easily just blame the editors for this inconsistency, but knowing how the manga started as a "if you work hard enough you can achieve everything you put your mind to" and ended up being "um actually Naruto was destined for greatness from the start and it was just his destiny" I really don't think Kishimoto has consistent moral compass

The "power hungry" explanation works even worse if you consider that every damn character in the series is encouraged to always improve and gain more power. Like, yes, Orochimaru is power hungry, and so is every fucking shinobi ever
