The Creative Engagement Fund is founded on the notion of the arts as catalysts for communities to take action around social issues. This idea has been applied frequently in jurisdictions around the world to help confront forms of societal oppression such as gender violence, racism, poverty and homophobia. Art shapes people’s perspectives and opinions. When applied to social justice, artists’ works offer a critical perspective that inform, provoke, and hold a mirror to society. Engaging with this kind of art can help equip the public with tools to understand and challenge social injustices, and to imagine a better future. FROM OUR FRIENDS AT THE OAC: The Ontario Arts Council has revised its funding programs for Ontario-based comics artists. The Writers’ Works in Progress program, which offers $12,000 grants to support the creation of new work, now has a dedicated deadline for comics projects. Applications should be postmarked or dropped off in person at the OAC no later than December 1, 2015. They will be assessed by a peer jury of Ontario-based comics artists.
More information, including full guidelines and application forms, can be found at: http://www.arts.on.ca/Page6005.aspx
· The new deadline is open to professional, Ontario-based writers and/or artists working on comics projects. For full eligibility rules, please see the program guidelines.
· Narrative, non-narrative, and wordless works are eligible. While this deadline is nested in a Literature program, it is intended for the broad spectrum of comics practice.
· Projects should be underway already. A 20 page sample of the work in progress is required as support material for the jury to review.
· Collaborative projects between an artist and a writer are eligible. If both the artist and writer live in Ontario, they must apply jointly, and the grant will be split 50/50 between the co-applicants. Collaborations between an artist or writer who lives inside Ontario and one who lives outside the province are eligible, but the Ontario-based collaborator must apply and will receive any grant awarded.
· Unlike other OAC Writers’ Works in Progress programs, the jury will know the identity of applicants.
· This program will not fund publication costs, but self-published creators may apply to create new work if they have a documented history of professional activity that includes ongoing participation in curated events or exhibitions.
For further information, please email Literature Officer Jack Illingworth at [email protected], or call Program Administrator Helen Floros at 416-969-7440 or 1-800-387-0058 ext. 7440
