Uncovered: Hiatus Kaiyote - 'Love Heart Cheat Code'
The Best Art Vinyl 2024 winning album artwork for 'Love Heart Cheat Code' by Australian Jazz/funk band Hiatus Kaiyote, receives the 'Uncovered' treatment, as we delve into the detail behind the creative process with the album's Creative Director and multi-disciplinary designer Jeremy Koren (aka Grey Ghost).
The front cover artwork is a painting by Rajni Perera discovered by the band's singer/guitarist Nai Palm who had been an admirer of Perera's work for some time and reached out to ask if the image could be used.
Perera’s art explores issues of hybridity, futurity, ancestorship, migrant and marginalized identities/cultures within the symbolistic style of her painting. Perera says that the work on the album cover is about, “..acknowledging the sacred female energy that drives this universe and restores balance to it. Even by painting it I have been blessed.”
The band’s singer/guitarist Nai Palm explains further, “I found the illustrious work of Rajni Perera years ago and hit her up to ask permission to tattoo some of her work. It was for my mastectomy scar which was super important for me to challenge beauty standards, and I wanted imagery that was both powerful but effeminate. The art for Love Heart Cheat Code was a piece of hers that already existed and was to be the final piece in my tattoo, but ended being right for the album. It was sentimental to close that chapter of my life with this record and imagery. I love that the line work has strong design elements and the blue took many attempts with me working directly with the layout designer finding the right Pantone. I subsequently learnt A LOT about blue and how light affects how we perceive colour. The artwork is simple yet refined, and totally striking.”
Jeremy Koren gets into the detail and tell us, "The process was a case of Nai Palm bringing the artwork by Rajni Perera to the band - who all fell in love it, as did I."
Jeremy told us that at first there were talks of adding typography to the cover artwork, but eventually it was decided to keep the whole album creative as symbols inspired by Perera's image, so he and the band enlisted the help of another artist Chloé Biocca for the back cover to help create a simple, yet expansive set of symbols representing each of the songs.
Jeremy explains, "The idea arose to create a symbol and discoverable 'artifacts' around each of the songs on the album. 11 songs with 11 symbols giving a physical exclusive associated to each track."
Using symbol references (seen below) Jeremy would sketch concepts based on conversations with the band.
He explains that, "These initial sketches were torn apart, fleshed out, reworked then reassembled to be the clean tattooable images by Chloé Biocca that are found on the back cover."
Looking more closely at the creative process for one of the album track's symbol 'Everything Is Beautiful' Jeremy shared the process with us.
The inspiration for the symbol came from the mood board below to create a Flower + Infinity image.
From this a vector image was created
The creative didn't end there and the team hit on the potential for 'Cult Literature' inspiration, using this symbol and a typeface inspired by cult propaganda literature. As part of the album promotion, the band set up a cult-like stall in front of Melbourne Library and handed out pamphlets created with details for the track, lyrics, photographs and a QR code to unlock a pre-save of the music.
The Love Heart Cheat Code creative took on a life of its own around the band's tour campaign, with the idea of a LHCC MART Convenience Store filled with products named after the song titles, each using their unique symbol to create a brand. Hilarious and decidedly tongue-in-cheek adverts were filmed, using the album's audio and featuring the band members.
Jeremy tells us, "We took all these symbols into a further LHCC (Love Heart Cheat Code) MART which were Pop Up Supermarkets with products using the symbols, plus stupid ads we made in the vein of naff 1980s Supermarket Commercials."
He continues, "We also created a giant fluffy life sized mascot in the shape of the Love Heart Cheat Code Symbol, his name is 'Handsome' and he jumps up on stage and has his own problems now."
