DEFINITION OF PREEMPTIVE STRIKE

A PREEMPTIVE STRIKE is a military action taken by a country in response to an imminent THREAT from another country.

The goal is to stop the THREATENING COUNTRY from executing its plans before it can ATTACK.

A PREEMPTIVE STRIKE is often seen as a DEFENSIVE MEASURE.

JUSTIFICATION CRITERIA

Several criteria are often discussed to justify a PREEMPTIVE STRIKE:

EXISTENCE OF INTENT: There must be a clear intention from the adversary to cause HARM.

MILITARY PREPARATIONS: The adversary should be actively preparing for an ATTACK, increasing the level of DANGER.

IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED: There should be a necessity to act quickly to avoid greater RISKS.

LEGAL CONSISTENCY: The action must align with INTERNATIONAL LAW and the UN CHARTER.

NOTABLE EXAMPLE

SIX-DAY WAR (1967): ISRAEL launched a PREEMPTIVE STRIKE against EGYPT, which had not yet attacked but was perceived as a THREAT.
