How bad is the Space Debris situation?

I watched Gravity with my friends a couple of months ago and one of the questions which frequently popped up in our conversation later that day was “How bad is the Space Junk situation in reality?”

I did a bit of research on my part and found some interesting details. NASA actually has a cool website which allows them to track the majority of satellites which are in the orbit.

As most of us know, there are satellites falling to earth all the time and most of them end up burning while re entering the atmosphere.  Fortunately, NASA tracks everything in orbit bigger than about 3". The only instance I could find when an active satellite was destroyed was in 2009.

One thing that the movie gets wrong is that, it is shown as if all the satellites are at the same height/orbit and every satellite has an elliptical orbit. That is definitely not the case.
