running into another car in the small town had been a fluke, but a welcomed surprise after the disastrous night julian and his passengers had. an optimistic frame-of-mind, he was grateful for the hot coffee and the abundant spread of food the diner was able to provide for the group of demigods. though where the rest of group currently was a mystery, however their absence gave him time to review the news on his tablet as he waited for their return to the table. a callback to his upbringing, he knew better than to start eating without the presence of the whole party.
“where did the others go? this french toast looks amazing,” he asked before looking up at her and offering her a sugar packet. although they hadn’t seen each other in years, some of her quirks were like muscle memory for julian.
"So top deep dish pizza in Chicago?” he asked, remembering Anaïs was born in Chicago from a conversation they had years ago about their hometowns. “I can’t tell if people actually like it or this is an inside joke.” The drive from New York to Philadelphia had been smooth so far, even though he hadn’t driven long distance since college. Nonetheless, he couldn’t say he trusted some of his peers behind the wheel. Taking a deep breath before he started to do stretches in preparation for the next leg of the drive. “How’s your car doing?”

New Athens. It isn’t New Rome, not the streets and the plaza that he knows intimately; it makes his hackles rise up, as if a fight’s about to break out beneath the sight of a pleasant mid-morning brunch. Victor’s mimosa is long gone, downed between it coming over and Julian opening his mouth. At least it loosens his face from a set frown to a small crinkle in his brow. “It’s not like my mood’s stopped you from having fun at brunch before, Jules,” he snipes back, eating what was an admittedly average bowl of oatmeal beneath a mountain of good breakfast options. “Shouldn’t we keep training, at least? Perfect the formations once or twice. Go over strategy.”

"Brunch is always fun first of all,” he reminded Victor. Having spent a lifetime hearing about the the most important meal of the day, he would gladly go on a tangent about the topic if the group wasn’t set to depart today. “Plus we’re going to be stuck in a car for days so we’ll have plenty of time to research,” he pointed out. At least, they were finally escaping the heat of New York City. “How are you though? We’re marching through the unknown right now,” he asked. Like many, the quest had been on his mind. Unlike previous quests they had all undertaken, this was the first time Olympus and the demigods were on the same page - lost and confused.
“i’m glad you joined me this morning,” julian beamed in between sips of his mimosa. although the urgency of the quest hadn’t left his mind, he had to acknowledge the minor objectives attached to the end goal. as lupa taught her students, one always had to be five steps ahead of their opponent. “are you going to share or be a grouch over french toast though?” he teased, reviewing the breakfast menu. following his usual morning workout, a hearty breakfast always followed. he found comfort in the routine, even if his companion decided to turn their run around the lake into a race.
