Social Media In The Philippines
        Social media had produced a huge impact in our country in today’s era. Media serves as an effective communication tool that lets the public well informed about certain issues concerning our country. As of the moment, multiple campaigns are to be seen in most of the social media platforms because election is right ahead, politicians uses this platform effectively to propagate their advocacies. On the other hand, social media also allows our citizens to voice out their opinion regarding issues the country is facing.
        According to an article from Asia Foundation, social networking had brought improvement on our elections. The initiative of ABS-CBN regards with their platform “Boto Mo, Ipatrol” helped a lot our citizen about engaging themselves in politics, it opened a new technology for election coverage. Observations from different citizen were sent to the system, it allows the ongoing election to be more transparent in all Filipinos.
        Human rights-based organizations had stood up for their advocacies, this was started when Asia Foundation, a long-termed partner of the organizations who try to move forward through technology, had sponsored the first Philippine Blogging Summit in May 2005. The outcome is visible on rapid transformation of social media landscape. The organization had the technology as the strength for the advancement of their social and political campaigns and for public support. They underwent a training on “Digital Activism” that focused to the use of social networking sites.
        USAID made this training possible, they’ve been the on that supported the training and the first series happened last June 2010. Seeing the development, the Strengthening Human Rights in the Philippines (SHRP) program conducted an Expanded Digital Activism Training in partnership with DAKILA – Philippine Collective for Modern Heroism. These training broaden the participants capabilities in optimizing social media, they’ve used personal accounts in promoting their causes and used a strategic approach to conduct human rights advocacy work in digital media.
        One of the outputs presented is by Ardan Sali of the Bangsamoro Center for Just Peace in the Philippines, he makes use of his blog to create a prototype website that demonstrated his understanding of website architecture in organizing the pages of the site in a clean and user-friendly interface, it is then called Tiyakap Kawagib. #WeWantPnoyTo had also been highlighted, it is used during the 2011 State of the Nation Address (SONA), it used by the attendees to raise the human rights advocacy to President Noynoy Aquino. It is their way of making President Ninoy Aquino lend an ear to the advocacies. It became one of the 10 most trending hashtags in the Philippines during that week.
