Sometimes, I have flashbacks to really random moments in my past - and I mean distant past... I mean I’ve only been alive for 22 years and some months, but to be able to recall a memory from my kindergarten/elementary years (approximately 16 years ago) must mean that it was really... important or defining moment, right?
Here are some random moments...
I was at a daycare with my siblings and other children - all of which happened to be boys. Sometime at night, we were all playing. Everyone took off their shirt and threw their shirt in the air - including myself. I remember my shirt was a sleeveless with a Mickey Mouse or Minnie Mouse on it. I remember thinking hm, I should probably not do this - didn’t have a basis though. But I did it. And was scolded shortly after. “Girls should not do this.”
There was a red tricycle at the daycare. I really liked it because it was so different from what I’ve seen up until then.
There was a yellow mug with a huge smiley face on it. My favorite cup to use. I think my daycare-takers told me it was mine.
One night my parents worked really late, and I remember having dinner with my daycare-takers. I’m not sure if we had dinner their frequently. But I remember this particular dinner, I bit into ginger... I think and I said it was spicy. Then one or both of the daycare-takers said they loved it and ate it right in front of me. I was really surprised...
I remember my first grade teacher ripping up my test. It was a spelling test... I think. I forget how they go. I think the teacher says a word and you just spell it. It may have been my first test ever... I wrote everything down verbatim from memory. I don’t remember if she started saying any words. But I walked over to her and showed her my notebook. She ripped it out, crumpled it, and threw it out. I was at a loss for words. I genuinely did not understand.
Sometime in Summer School... between 1st and 2nd grade I think, or Kindergarten and 1st grade... I volunteered to write a sentence on those huge flipping notepads. I wrote a sentence in orange... definitely included the word “Hello.” I was praised for my neat handwriting.
Also in that Summer School ^, the teacher said to me, “No one likes a tattle tale” when I tried to get someone in trouble. I have no recollection what she looked like - other than she had brown hair.
