Project 5 Word on the Street 

After reading the rubric and knowing this would be put in a public space I wanted to make something that got the person thinking or straight up made them uncomfortable.  I wanted to post them on a popular trail by my house in Highlands Ranch.  Most of my neighbors are very conservative and I think they are a little sheltered and sure enough my point was proven.  After I had taken my first two poster pictures and was getting to a new spot to set up the third the cops showed up.  I decided to leave after this.  I was a little bothered on my walk home. In an act of defiance later that night I made some girl power magic stickers and stuck them in bathroom stalls, the light rail, and a dispensary.  I honestly am most proud of someone being so bothered by what I was doing they called the cops.

1.skrillex-fire away This song has always been one of my favorites because of how it makes me feel, I put it by some doors because I hate the feeling of being walked out on and I always want to be included in whatever is going on. 2.citizen-flowerchild This is one of those grungy songs that I really love and wanted to play with the text font and placement to follow the text. I placed it in a hallway because of the lyrics referring to echos in empty halls 3.excision-are you ready I get pumped to songs like this because I love to enjoy myself and have a good time more than anything else. Especially since it’s the end of the semester and everyone’s gonna be running down the stairs after they ace their finals and summer starts it’s a cool thing to see and grab the viewers attention.

“Washing my hands clean”

When I started thinking about this project, I thought about myself as part of a community a more global feel to it. As a human on this earth, I need to be more mindful, more involved, more of a human being that will help create change locally and globally. These are big ideas and big goals and as my time in this earth starts to expire I need to remind myself that washing myself clean from things that I don’t see in a daily basis maybe because they don’t directly affect me doesn’t mean they don’t need attention, global warming, immigration, discrimination, war, etc. change is important, necessary and we need to help one another achieve new goals.

Strongly agree, we need each other to make a change. just because sometime you are too focusing on one thing doesn’t mean other thing don’t come in your way.

Reading and Response 5: Robert Montgomery Interview 

I had no idea who Robert Montgomery was before this interview.  I think its rad that he associates himself more with graffiti art than any other contemporary art form. He originally spray painted his words on the sides of buses. Montgomery writes his own poetry and finds the street most impactful to him as an artist.  The internet is also a huge platform where his art is viewed.  Twitter really is a crazy tool for artists today, it can get their art into the hands of thousands of followers in seconds.  Its pretty amazing his poetry is reaching and  even tattooed on people across the world.  I found it cool that his goal is to own a bunch of billboards to display his truths regularly.  I’ve never seen anything like that and I would love to see what billboards he would create.

Reading and Response 5: Jenny Holzer Interview

This interview really made me connect with who Jenny Holzer is as an artist. Thorough this interview I learned Jenny Holzer had originally gone to school to be a painter and found her own niche when her art wasn’t working.  She goes on to discuss her art needing to reach more people, not just the artsy ones. She tries to place content wherever people look from the bottom of a paper cup to the surface of a river. I would have to agree with Kiki Smith when she tells the story of her first seeing Holzer’s work outside, and how it never occurred to her as an artist she could do that.  I have never thought of taking some of my art off the computer screen.  It’s a great concept and defies the confines of a museum.  I love that she eventually began to collaborate with poets to use their words when it all became too much for her to do it alone. I find her commitment to the redacted government documents intriguing.  She is very passionate about the officers, soldiers, and others voices being heard.  Out of all her art she wants that to be her legacy.

Unit 4:

I apologize for being late on posting this.

I changed my mind probably four or five times last week.  I’m not sure why I was so indecisive.   I really struggled with wrapping my head around what performance art really is.  I filmed a couple of ideas and hated them so much I had to think of something new.  In the end I decided to go with something I do every day.  

I always giggle to myself when I dress my little Boston Terrier named Kiwi.  She really seems to enjoy getting dressed every morning. Because of her love for clothes she has acquired quite the wardrobe.   In Colorado we can have all the seasons in one week (like last week).  I documented a week in the life of a Colorado dog that has to deal with the changing seasons.  She’s pretty tiny so when the temperatures drop she needs a little hoddie.  Originally I planned to have her posed on the same pillow all of the days.  But she wasn’t too stoked on it. I’m not sure if I totally missed the mark on this and just took pictures of my dog for a week? 

After this experience I have so much respect for performance artists.  I can’t imagine how much planning goes into the execution of a performance.

Reading #4

Before the reading by Roselee Goldberg I really didn’t have a lot of knowledge on performance art. I found this reading helpful. I was surprised to find out the history of performance art dates back so far.  I like that performance artists want to engage with their audiences and make connections with the people that are viewing their art.  

Marina Abramovic dedication in the The Artist is Present is pretty amazing.  I honestly can’t say performance art is something I know much about.  This documentary gives a firsthand look at what the artist goes through getting ready for a huge exhibit and what it takes to make it through it.  I thought it was pretty rad that after her show would end for the day many people would just leave and get back in line to sit across from her the next day! This documentary really opened my eyes to how much goes into being a performance artist and how each aspect plays a roll from fasting to the artists emotions.

“Vanishing and Becoming”

For this project, I decided to use a massive storm front to illustrate the effects of color and light in a natural environment. This was one of the most natural forms of color I could think of. As far as lighting, I figured the vanishing and reappearing of lightening would be ideal for this project. I am from the Mid-West where storms come as a typical spring afternoon. Growing up, I have always loved storms; the quick and drastic darkening of the once clear-blue sky, the loud and jarring boom of the thunder, the melodic drips of the rain against the concrete, the starting flashes of lighting that cut across the world, I could go on. I feel like I can count on one hand the amount of thunder storms that have taken place in Colorado since I moved here 2 years ago. I miss these beautiful disasters!

For this project I decided to reverse the time lapse of the super moon rising, vanishing.  I combined it with a video of a butterfly going back into its cocoon, becoming. The music is based off of the happiness frequency.

Reading #3

Chapter 6 Reading

This chapter opened my mind up to how many different ways time can be shown through video art. Time is a powerful tool when creating art. When sped up or slowed down film artists determine where the viewers eyes will fall a on the screen.  I honestly have no experience doing any kind of video editing.  This chapter was helpful in understanding the different dimensions of time.  

Vanishing and Becoming Response

This reading was kind of rough for me, it took me a few tries to get through it. Cubitt compares Pliny and Buddha’s first accounts of art being introduced to human life. Although the stories are conflicting, the beginning of art lies in projected light.

Artist Statement:

When deciding on what theme I would choose to do my GIF series on I tried to put way less pressure on myself than I did the last project and have a little bit more fun with it.  I chose to make gifs of funny scenes from some of my favorite shows and movies.  I did one of my Boston terrier because I have so many videos of her.  In the end I really enjoyed making all of these and I hope to make a lot more in the future now that I know how.
