Blog Post #3: What You Didn’t See

Pintrest is a great tool and super fun, but does have some flaws. On Pontrest it is sometimes hard to find exactly what you’re looking for, but does give you other creative ideas. This tool also does not emphasize on captions which can make it difficult to see the posters view or opinion or even comments on a post. The idea of Pintrest is to have fun and be creative and I think it does do a great job of conveying this idea.

I also had Pinterest as my tool in the beginning of the semester, you bring about good points about the flaws of Pinterest. I do agree that it does give you creative ideas but it is hard to pin point exactly what you might be looking for.

Infant Joy

While reading William Blakes poem “infant Joy”, I realized that the poem could be a poem about the joy of childbirth. But, looking more into the poem I realized it could also be about postpartum depression. This idea led me to write our most recent paper on how this poem highlights the affects of postpartum depression in mothers. Throughout the poem we read how the birth of a child is supposed to be a joyful moment for both mother and father, but it is not always the case as we now know today. Living during this time period women did not know that this was the cause of what they were feeling, and there was nothing they could do to stop it. This poem opened up my in to the struggled many women went through not only during childbirth, but also after.

After going back and reflecting on this poem, I can understand how you can see the different subjects that this form could bring.

Billy Budd imagery 365

Throughout the semester I really have grown fond of the different images that authors can place in the readers mind. One of the last texts we read in class was Billy Budd and one of the lines stood out to me. On page 283, Melville writes, “ Quick as lightning Billy let fly his arm” ( Melville 283). I love the first part of that statement. “ Quick as lightning”. Not only can I picture thing bolt of lightning striking but the comparison here is interesting.

While reading Billy Budd by Herman Melville, I tracked some interesting subjects. One of those subjects are how Billy Budd is sort of compared to different Christian figures. Often he is described similar to Adam, stressing his lack of experience with the civilized, and his innocence. The quote that Melville writes is on page 288. He writes, “ Billy in many respects was little more than sort of upright barbarian, much such perhaps as Adam presumably might have been ere the urbane Serpent wriggled himself into his company” ( Melville 288). There is more to unpack with this quote I just am not sure where to go with the idea.

As I sit in class and we talk about certain topics, I always leave class thinking about our conversations. I would have never ( I don’t think) come up with these topics on my own. Never in any class I have taken have I dived into the deeper meaning of a word, or of a phrase or compared two words that could be related or they may not be related what so ever. “ Live in the all” vs a Toothache. At first I was like no way can these two concepts even be related.

Live in the all! - Can possibly exist in small bits, there can be multiple points of focus. I think of the concept You are all in, meaning everything you have is in, you are living in the moment.

Toothache- It is usually fixated on one thing/ spot. It can impact other aspects of life, and if you have a toothache chances are you are focuses only on fixing that one pain.

I can see the correlations between the two but there are other some differences and I know there can be much more said about the two concepts.

Throughout Pierre and in class there has been mention of the reoccurrence of the word snowy and snow. I want to take time to focus on a few more points relating to that key word that are mentioned in the book by Melville. On page 49, Melville yes the phrase snow white. Doing an analysis on this snow could mean purity and the phrase, ‘snow white’ relates to a fairy tale. On the opposite side of the spectrum snow can is cold and it could be dangerous this leads me to think that it could be linked to his father. The next mention of snow and white is on page 110. Here Melville is talking about the cheese as being like a snow white color. I am not quit sure what to do with that. Maybe he is saying that the cheese has a light color to it. There is also reference to this topic on page 191. Melville writes, “ Is love then cold, and glory white? Thy cheek is snowy, Pierre”. Again I am not sure what to do with the concept here. I do in fact like what is being said here, asking if love is cold is it dangerous? Or is it glorious and pure?

In today’s class we started briefly talking about Lincoln in the Bardo, I thought our class conversation was interesting and of course I am leaving class thinking about our discussion. What had me thinking was the idea of the process of grief, and the two quotes that we were talking about. The quotes that especially had me thinking was “ little things inside us burst”. I thought this quote was an interesting connection to processing grief. Of course everyone process grief in all sorts of different ways. For me personally when a loved one passes away at first it is hard to think of the good moments, the moments that you hope to keep forever, only at first the bad memories take over.Its hard to think of the memories. I think of this as the little things that are bursting inside. To tie this into connection with waves and grief I think that waves are unexpected at times and in some cases so is grief, they both can be very powerful aspects of life.

I know we talked about Winky a while back in class but I keep going to back to my note and reflecting back on Winky and the opening of the book and the different culture objects. The hat that are mentioned are interesting in the fact that they are colored hats that are made out of paper, which is interesting because they can be massed produced, there can be a lot made in a little amount of time. Another cultural object that stood out was the flannel shirts. They are suppose to keep people warm, if they have holes they can be less effective. I associated flannels with farmers, lumberjacks and the 90s. In todays culture and society flannels seem to be seen more and more not only on men but women also. I do know that women in today’s society can buy flannel dresses which is interesting all in itself.

Going back to Pierre, I thought the imagery that Melville used is very vivid and it puts the reader in his perspective and his time. I particularly like the imagery Melville uses on page 265. This section of the book talks about the Church of the Apostles, we talked a little about this in class but the imagery is what stuck in my head. Melville writes, “ At the sides of this quadrangle, three stories of homely brick colonnades afforded covered communication between the ancient church” ( Melville 265). This quote helps understand what the image is, Melville is describing what he sees so the reader can see it. He the goes on to write, “ A dismantled, rusted, and forlorn old railing of iron fencing in a small country yard in front of the rearward building, seemed to hint that the latter had usurped an unoccupied space formerly sacred as the old church’s burial in closure” ( Melville 265-266). Both of these quotes by Melville have imagery packed into them. I can picture the rusted, old railing and the fence in the small country yard.

Pierre ending

The final moments of Pierre are interesting. In class we touched on the ending a little bit, at the ending gives me a Shakespeare feeling. Melville writes, “ From the fingers of Isabel dropped an empty vial- as it had been a run-out sand glass- and shivered upon the floor, and her whole form sloped sideways and she fell upon Pierrre’s heart, and her long hair ran over hime, and arbored him in ebon wines” ( Melvile 362). This section is the part that correlates for be the similarities between Shakespeare and Melville. I think it is interesting that Melville chooses to end the novel in this way, meaning it is interesting that he chooses to have Isabel die.

I keep reflecting back on the ideas of sympathy in joy vs Empathy. It was very interesting to have this discussion in class. I kept going back to this idea well after our class discussion, I even had a brief discussion with our TA about this idea. I feel that sympathy in joy relies on the recognition of what the pain is. On the same hand sympathy is understating why that person is feeling like that, your’e feeling for someone who is going through the tough time, your’e offering a sort of comfort. You are sorry for their loss. Where as empathy brings a new aspect to the topic. Empathy to me is when you know the feeling of what they are going through, you have an understanding about the feeling. For example if one of my grandparents had passed away then it’s possible for someone else that has also lost their grandparents to know the feeling of that loss. I feel like this idea can come back around to the Bondswoman’s Narrative. I reflect back on how readers feel when they read the novel. For me In a way the feeling is sympathy, but it is possible for other readers to feel empathy, if they have has a similar experience.

Reflecting back on the work we did on our last class. It was interesting to take a section and dive into the meaning of that section. In Pierre on page 32. I chose the section that states, "Behold our airy loves, the birds chirped from the trees far out at sea, no more the sailors tied their bowline-knots, their hands had lost their sunning, will they, will they, love tied love- knots on every spangled spat".( 32). I thought this was interesting to ponder on, especially looking at the difference of love vs love-not ( Knot). A knot- is useful,it ties and holds things together, at the same time it can cause a problem, and if you have to many knots it can have to many attachments. I am not entirely sure how to connect this with love yet.

Reflecting back on the work we did in class with The Bondswomen Narrative. In class we had the opportunity to chose a crossed out out section and elaborate on what the crossed out portion brought about. The part that I chose was simply just a few words. On page 47 of the text. " His voice, his manner, above all his singular words quite overcame me, and I was obliged to leaned for support against the table" ( 47). Looking at this full sentence it is clear that the she was forced to get support because she was forcefully made to do so. "I was obliged to" was crossed out." I thought this was interesting because I think here we can see the restraint by Hannah Craft. A restraint to not write what had actually taken place, this could be fear of writing the truth. By taking out those few words it changes the tone of the sentence, a tone from she was made to do something to, she leaned forward for support against the table.

I really enjoyed the work we did in class with the Prownian Analysis, involving The Bondswoman's Narrative. By utilizing the Prownian Analysis we can examine the book just by the physical descriptions. We had the opportunity to use this tool with the Bondswoman's Narrative. Before opening the book, we took a look at the physical dimensions, what the color of the book was, the difference between fonts and why one font may be bigger than the other, we looked at the weight of the book and the back of the book and the differences and the similarities. After that we tried to tie in these similarities and differences to a broader spectrum. We just recently did this with the magazines we all were given in class. Before even opening the object we were asked to analysis the object. I recall the main thing that I pointed out on the object was the price and the address on the back. My immediate reaction to that was the price was $8.99, which to me is really high priced therefore the magazine was for the working class or someone that could afford that.

Doubling back and reflecting on the digital tool that was assigned to me, ( Pinterest) there were some flaws that the tool had. As mentioned in my previous posts, when I typed in one key word, many other associations tagged along. In order to find what you specifically wanted you have to type in exactly those key words. The tool is filled with many different areas you can look up. As I scroll through Pinterest there seems to be an overwhelming amount of makeup and food pictures and tips. What can this mean? is Pinterest mainly for a specific sexuality? I was curious to see what would happen if I took one of the prompt questions and typed in one of the words. I typed in ' Ideology' into Pinterest. What came to follow was shocking. the first picture that appeared was a chart of different Ideologies that we could possibly see/have. I noticed that there were different links that I could click on that Pinterest associated with the word ' Ideology'. My options were Art, Quotes, Clothing, ideas and Illustrations. I thought this was interesting as I did not know that one simple word have many different Associates such as those. Overall Pinterest can be used for some pretty good things but there is a wide variety as to what people but on Pinterest.

My chosen tool to manipulate was Pinterest. Although I love Pinterest I usually search material that is under the categories of food, decorating or some short of fashion sense. This time I was given the task to use Pinterest to search different topics related to class. I searched Romantic first. I gave me a bunch different ideas for dates, and tips/ideas on how to be romantic, all of the tings listed were that of this generation. I then went more specific and searched Romantic Era and the two pictures are what was given to me. In a way it is strange that it brought me back in time with just a simple word added. The pictures help me to actually see what women in this era wore, and how different the romantic clothing is regarding back then and today’s society.

For our blog post #1 I received Pinterest as my topic. This happens to be my favorite website to use. It helps find DIY ( do it yourself) projects, new recipes, decorating tips, clothing styles and ideas for just about anything. I already have been using Pinterest for years now, and I have various pins that I personally have saved to my account. What happens when you make an account is you are able to Pin certain things. For example if I found new holloween decor, and wanted to decorticate my house similar to the picture that I found I could pin it and I could make a new section just for that specific thing. As another example if I looked up crockpot recipes, I could save those recipes to a crockpot section. This helps with organization and it helps when you want to go back nd find that recipe or project.
